Step Afrika! Performs at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat
Sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Rabat and in partnership with the Fondation Orient-Occident, the American step dance troup Step Afrika! performed at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, Morocco, on June 19, 2013. Performing with the group were a number of drummers and dancers from Sub-Saharan Africa, many living as refugees in Morocco, as well as a troupe of deaf drummers from Morocco and a traditional Moroccan Gnaoua group.

As a cultural institution, the role of Mohammed V National Theatre is to be open to all music genres, including contemporary and classical dance and music. I think that today, we managed to win this challenge. It is the fruit of the tremendous efforts deployed by the Royal Symphonic Orchestra.

It is not the first time we've met the Moroccan Royal Symphonic Orchestra. It is our fifth meeting together. The troupe likes Morocco very much for its traditions, its mentality and its charm, without forgetting the professionalism of the orchestra that is probably the best in the Arab world.

We have to do this show with only two rehearsal sessions and it is very difficult because the themes change frequently and so on. But the orchestra is now on its way to being fully professional like any European orchestra. It is able to do so and also able to follow the conductor who keeps an eye on the dancers. The orchestra can follow the show brilliantly.

LEADIN:
The Moscow Classical Ballet has brought some magic to the stage in Morocco with their interpretation of the love story, La Traviata.
Despite limited rehearsal opportunities, the dancers lit up Rabat's Mohammed V National Theatre to music performed by the Royal Symphony Orchestra.
STORYLINE:
The world famous troupe of the Moscow Classical Ballet.
The Russians perform La Traviata in two acts, accompanied by a rousing performance from the Royal Symphony Orchestra under the direction of maestro Oleg Reshetkin.
It's become a tradition for the theatre to invite a Russian company at the start of every year.
Last year, the same troupe played Don Quixote to the delight of music lovers and before that, it was The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and Coppelia.
The newly renovated theatre is attracting higher quality shows and its managing director, Mohamed Benhsaine is keen to satisfy all tastes in music.
