Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California. Situated within the Mojave Desert, it is the lowest and driest area in North America. Death Valley holds the record for the highest recorded air temperature on Earth. Badwater Basin, located in Death Valley, is the point of the lowest elevation in North America at 282 feet (86 m) below sea level. This point is only 84.6 miles (136.2 km) east-southeast of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 m). Death Valley holds the record for the highest reliably reported temperature in the world, 134 °F (56.7 °C) at Furnace Creek on July 10, 1913. The previously-claimed world record air temperature, 136 °F (57.8 °C) in 'Aziziya, Libya, on September 13, 1922, has been officially deemed invalid by the World Meteorological Organization. Located near the border of California and Nevada, in the Great Basin, east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Death Valley constitutes much of Death Valley National Park and is the principal feature of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts Biosphere Reserve. It is located mostly in Inyo County, California. It runs from north to south between the Amargosa Range on the east and the Panamint Range on the west; the Sylvania Mountains and the Owlshead Mountains form its northern and southern boundaries, respectively. It has an area of about 3,000 sq mi (7,800 km2). Death Valley shares many characteristics with other places below sea level. Death Valley is one of the best geological examples of a basin and range configuration. It lies at the southern end of a geological trough known as Walker Lane, which runs north into Oregon. The valley is bisected by a right lateral strike slip fault system, represented by the Death Valley Fault and the Furnace Creek Fault. The eastern end of the left lateral Garlock Fault intersects the Death Valley Fault. Furnace Creek and the Amargosa River flow through the valley but eventually disappear into the sands of the valley floor. Death Valley also contains salt pans. According to current geological consensus, during the middle of the Pleistocene era there was a succession of inland seas (collectively referred to as Lake Manly) located where Death Valley is today. As the area turned to desert the water evaporated, leaving behind the abundance of evaporitic salts such as common sodium salts and borax, which were subsequently exploited during the modern history of the region, primarily 1883 to 1907. Death Valley has a subtropical desert climate (Köppen: BWh), with long, extremely hot summers, mild winters, and little rainfall. As a general rule, lower altitudes tend to have higher temperatures where the sun heats the ground and that heat is then radiated upward, but as the air begins to rise it is trapped by the surrounding elevation and the weight of the air (essentially the atmospheric pressure) above it. The atmospheric pressure is higher at very low altitudes than it is under the same conditions at sea level because there is more air (more distance) between the ground and the top of the atmosphere. This pressure traps the heat near the ground, and also creates wind currents that circulate very hot air, thereby distributing the heat to all areas, regardless of shade and other factors. This process is especially important in Death Valley as it provides its specific climate and geography. The valley is surrounded by mountains, while its surface is mostly flat and devoid of plants, and of which a high percentage of the sun's heat is able to reach the ground, absorbed by soil and rock. When air at ground level is heated, it begins to rise, moving up past steep high mountain ranges, which then cools slightly, sinking back down towards the valley more compressed. This air is then reheated by the sun to a higher temperature, moving up the mountain again, whereby the air moves up and down in a circular motion in cycles, similar to how a convection oven works. This superheated air increases ground temperature markedly, forming the hot wind currents that are trapped by atmospheric pressure and mountains, thus stays mostly within the valley. Such hot wind currents contribute to perpetual drought-like conditions in Death Valley and prevent much cloud formation to pass through the confines of the valley, where precipitation is often in the form of a virga. Death Valley holds temperature records because it has an unusually high number of factors that lead to high atmospheric temperatures. The depth and shape of Death Valley influence its summer temperatures.

SECRET ABANDONED GHOST TOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOJAVE DESERT...
Today we explore a hidden, and some call secret ghost town in the middle of the Mojave National Preserve.
Two of the nice abandoned cabins are maintained by volunteers as public cabins anyone can use. We tried to not give out the name in order to protect them from scumbag vandals.

Driving around Inyo County, California in the Mojave Desert
Inyo County is on the east side of the Sierra Nevada and southeast of Yosemite National Park in Central California. It contains the Owens River Valley; it is flanked to the west by the Sierra Mountains and to the east by the White Mountains and the Inyo Mountains.
Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the Contiguous United States, is on Inyo County's western border (with Tulare County). The Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park, the lowest place in North America, is in eastern Inyo County. The two points are not visible from each other, but both can be observed from the Panamint Range on the west side of Death Valley, above the Panamint Valley. It has the biggest elevation difference of all of the counties and county-equivalents in the contiguous United States.
With an area of 10,192 square miles (26,397 km2), Inyo County is the second-largest county by area in California, after San Bernardino County. Almost one-half of that area is within Death Valley National Park. However, with a population density of 1.8 people per square mile, it has the lowest population density of any county in California.
Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, Mojave Desert, California, United States, North America
Zabriskie Point is a part of Amargosa Range located in east of Death Valley in Death Valley National Park in the United States noted for its erosional landscape. It is composed of sediments from Furnace Creek Lake, which dried up 5 million years ago long before Death Valley came into existence. The location was named after Christian Brevoort Zabriskie, vice-president and general manager of the Pacific Coast Borax Company in the early 20th century. The company's twenty-mule teams were used to transport borax from its mining operations in Death Valley. Millions of years prior to the actual sinking and widening of Death Valley and the existence of Lake Manly (see Geology of the Death Valley area), another lake covered a large portion of Death Valley including the area around Zabriskie Point. This ancient lake began forming approximately nine million years ago. During several million years of the lake's existence, sediments were collecting at the bottom in the form of saline muds, gravels from nearby mountains, and ashfalls from the then-active Black Mountain volcanic field. These sediments combined to form what we today call the Furnace Creek Formation. The climate along Furnace Creek Lake was dry, but not nearly as dry as in the present. Camels, mastodons, horses, carnivores, and birds left tracks in the lakeshore muds, along with fossilized grass and reeds. Borates, which made up a large portion of Death Valley's historical past were concentrated in the lakebeds from hot spring waters and alteration of rhyolite in the nearby volcanic field. Weathering and alteration by thermal waters are also responsible for the variety of colors represented there. Regional mountains building to the west influenced the climate to become more and more arid, causing the lake to dry up, and creating a dry lake. Subsequent widening and sinking of Death Valley and the additional uplift of today's Black Mountains tilted the area. This provided the necessary relief to accomplish the erosion that produced the badlands we see today. The dark-colored material capping the badland ridges (to the left in the panoramic photograph) is lava from eruptions that occurred three to five million years ago. This hard lava cap has retarded erosion in many places and possibly explains why Manly Beacon, the high outcrop to the right, is much higher than other portion of the badlands. Manly Beacon was named in honor of William L. Manly, who along with John Rogers, guided members of the ill-fated Forty-niners out of Death Valley during the gold rush of 1849. The primary source of borate minerals gathered from Death Valley's playas is Furnace Creek Formation. The Formation is made up of over 5000 feet (1500 m) of mudstone, siltstone, and conglomerate. The borates were concentrated in these lakebeds from hot spring waters and altered rhyolite from nearby volcanic fields.

Mojave Desert National Preserve California
A visit to Mojave National Preserve, California. Singing sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, Joshua tree forests, and carpets of wildflowers are all found at this 1.6 million acre park. A visit to its canyons, mountains and mesas will reveal long-abandoned mines, homesteads, and rock-walled military outposts. Located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Mojave provides serenity and solitude from major metropolitan areas.
Mojave National Preserve is a United States National Preserve located in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California, USA, between Interstate 15 and Interstate 40. The preserve was established October 31, 1994 with the passage of the California Desert Protection Act by the US Congress.[3] Previously, it was the East Mojave National Scenic Area, under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management.[4] Mojave National Preserve is vast. At 1,600,000 acres (650,000 ha), it is the third largest unit of the National Park System in the contiguous United States.
Natural features include the Kelso Dunes, the Marl Mountains and the Cima Dome, as well as volcanic formations such as Hole-in-the-Wall and the Cinder Cone Lava Beds. The preserve encloses Providence Mountains State Recreation Area and Mitchell Caverns Natural Preserve, which are both managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation.
Impressive Joshua Tree forests cover parts of the preserve. The Cima Dome and Shadow Valley forests are the largest in the world.[5] The defunct railroad depot and ghost town of Kelso are also found there. The depot is now the visitor center. The preserve is commonly traversed by 4 wheel drive vehicles traveling on the historic Mojave Road.
The climate varies greatly. Summer temperatures average 90 °F (32 °C), with highs exceeding 105 °F (41 °C). Elevations in the Preserve range from 7,929 feet (2,417 m) at Clark Mountain to 880 feet (270 m) near Baker. Annual precipitation varies from 3.37 inches (86 mm) near Baker, to almost 9 inches (230 mm) in the mountains. At least 25% of precipitation comes from summer thunderstorms. Snow is often found in the mountains during the winter.

The Mojave Desert is bordered by the Great Basin Desert to its north and the Sonoran Desert to its south and east.
Topographical boundaries include the Tehachapi Mountains to the west, and the San Gabriel Mountains and San Bernardino Mountains to the south. The mountain boundaries are distinct because they are outlined by the two largest faults in California – the San Andreas and Garlock faults.
The Mojave Desert displays typical basin and range topography. Higher elevations above 2,000 ft (610 m) in the Mojave are commonly referred to as the High Desert; however, Death Valley is the lowest elevation in North America at 280 ft (85 m) below sea level and is one of the Mojave Desert's most notorious places.
Large parts of the Mojave Desert are often referred to as the high desert, in contrast to the low desert, the Sonoran Desert to the south. Most of the Mojave Desert is above 2,000 ft (610 m), with only Death Valley and the Colorado River basin in the east (including the neighbouring Las Vegas Valley) being lower.
The Mojave Desert, however, is generally lower than the even higher Great Basin Desert to the north. The Mojave Desert occupies less than 50,000 sq mi (130,000 km2), making it the smallest of the North American deserts.
The spelling Mojave originates from the Spanish language while the spelling Mohave comes from modern English. Both are used today, although the Mojave Tribal Nation officially uses the spelling Mojave; the word is a shortened form of Hamakhaave, their endonym in their native language, which means 'beside the water'.

6. Sloth Dung
A giant, extinct sloth once lived inside caves in Utah and it turns out he used this cave as a toilet, whenever duty called. Analyzing this mummified dung can give researchers an insight on what he was eating 11,000 years ago. A chemical analysis shows that it feasted on a shrub known as desert globemallow, which is often nicknamed Mormon Tea, as well as a drought surviving plant known as saltbush. Modern days sloths don’t regulate temperature very well and finding this dung inside a cave also proves that they must have began finding shelter in caves in order to keep warm. This give them a good idea of what plants were growing in present day Utah as well as the climate
5.Anasazi Sandals
The anasazi are a very mysterious tribe of native americans who often had some strange displays of cave art near the 4 corners region of the united states. Did you think californians were the first to use flip flops? That’s clearly not the case as more and more sandal artifacts from the anasazi people are showing up! The desert ground is often hot for at least half of the year and it’s not the easiest thing to step on if you’re barefoot. The anasazi manufactured sandals made from whole leaf yucca which was woven carefully to the person’s foot. Prehistoric sandals were nothing like the kind of shoes we have today but the crafting techniques certainly show a degree of sophistication. Sandals were interweaved with looms diagonally from one side of the sandal to the other, creating enough layers to keep their feet protected on a minimal level
4.Cowboy Mummy
There aren’t a whole lot mummies in North America compared to places like Egypt or Peru but the very few mummies that have been discovered in our deserts are pretty creepy. This mummy were looking at here was found in the desert near Gila Bend Arizona and he was given the nickname of Sylvester, kind of like the cat. Rumor on the web has it that he was caught cheating while playing poker, and tried to escape the angry person shooting at him by running off into the desert. He bled out and the dry desert preserved his body. However that might have just been a story to attract some attention. It’s most likely that his body was quickly preserved with an abnormally large amount arsenic after passing. It’s turned out the real answer was a little bit of both stories and he was found to have buckshot in his internal organs. He’s on display at the Ye old curiousity shop in seattle washington.
3. The Mojave Nugget
The largest known golden nugget found in California is known as the Mojave nugget and it was found in 1977 by a prospector Ty Paulsen. Weighing in at 4.9 kilograms it’s worth roughly 205,800 dollars with the current price of gold! Who knew a hobby could result in such a life changing discovery. The massive chunk of gold ore was found near Randsburg, California which as had a history of gold mining since 1895 when gold was first discovered. Ty Paulsen is certainly happy no other pioneer was able to find this chunk of metal! It was apparently so heavy, that a special gold scale had to be created for this specific specimen. It was donated to the natural history museum of los angeles county which seems like one heck of a donation! Instead of playing the lottery, you might as well just buy a metal detector and get to work
2.Petroglyphs of Sloan Canyon
Located south of Las Vegas, the petroglyphs of sloan canyon are often overlooked by the petroglyphs at the valley of fire or red rock canyon. How these should not be overlooked, and are some of the best preserved petroglyphs in the western united states. It’s not a tourist friendly attraction and the sloan canyon conservation area was created basically to keep people out rather than to keep them in.. They date back to 12,000 years ago and it requires an intense 2 to 3 mile hike to reach. Much of the artwork is open to interpretation and some of them might even make you wonder if the piutes who lived here might have made some kind of contact with extraterrestrials. It’s believed that the valley was filled with more water at one point in time, meaning that it was much more habitable than it is now.

Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California's Mojave Desert, the lowest, driest, and hottest area in North America.
Death Valley's Badwater Basin is the point of the lowest elevation in North America at 282 feet (86 m) below sea level. This point is 84.6 miles (136.2 km) east-southeast of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 m). Death Valley's Furnace Creek holds the record for the highest reliably reported air temperature in the world, 134 °F (56.7 °C) on July 10, 1913.

There are a lot of videos on YouTube depicting driving a vehicle of one sort or another in California's Mojave Desert. Usually these videos depict persons engaged in some form of extreme driving practice such as dune buggy or dirt bike riding on sand dunes, etc. This video shows what it is like to drive along an unremarkable gravel/dirt road in the Mojave Desert just for the sake of travel, and not for the sake of thrills. There are far too many thrill seekers in the United States of America, and too few travelers. Thank you.
