Chasing Dust: Crossing the Mojave Road
It's always a good week when our Truck Editor, Matt Moghaddam is back in his element. This week, Desert Chief takes you along on an bucket-list-worthy journey across the mighty Mojave Road, which spans 127 miles from Barstow, California to Laughlin, Nevada. Matt, in his 1991 Toyota Pickup and his buddy Rylee, in his Ford F150 Prerunner, saddle up and head out to complete this trail once again, hopefully without any hiccups along the way. Watch the full video and know before you go!

Mojave Road Adventure, March 2019, Day 1
I’ve always been fond of the desert, even before my days assigned in Victorville while serving in the Air Force. And, a few friends and I ran the Mojave Road back in 2012. It’s a fascinating area filled with natural beauty and testaments to the fortitude of man. I wanted to return. So, some friends from Arizona, Washington, California and Colorado and I decided to spend four days and three nights exploring this remarkable region. On the first day, we would travel from our meet-up point at Avi Resort and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, to a primitive campsite above Piute Gorge in the Mojave National Preserve, California.
The music is Club by Andrew Huang, and was obtained through the YouTube Audio Library. It is available from the YouTube Audio Library.
Mojave road 2019
We traveled on the Mojave road from Laughlin, NV, to Baker, CA. It was over 100 miles trail across the Mojave Desert thru freezing weather, snow, mud, and rough terrains where 4x4 is recommended. It took us two days to travel across. We started with 6 trucks and ended with 2. A few friends had to leave the trail because of work and freezing weather at night. Thank goodness none of us had mechanical issues with our vehicles but some of us got stuck going through the sticky mud. All of us had a wonderful time with outdoor bbq, gourmet food, desert atmosphere and the nature surrounded us.

Mojave Road, 2016
Back in 2016 a small group of Copperstate 4 Wheelers traversed the Mojave desert on the historic Mojave Road. We had a great time and made a number of stops along the way to see some cool sites. Now I've re-edited the 3 videos into 1. So sit back and check our trip to the Mojave Road.

Mojave Trail in a 4runner
My Co-Worker Chris and I explored the Mojave trail at night on our way to Laughlin for the Method Race Wheels Laughlin Desert Classic. It was his first time really driving the new 4Runner offroad and my first time running the Mojave Trail at night. We didn't get much video other then the water crossing because it got dark pretty fast and it was pitch black out. Can't wait to do this trail again.

One of California's newest National Monuments lies in the desert between Barstow and Needles. It also encompasses the longest stretch of Route 66 that is undeveloped in the U.S.A. The Amboy Crater was the highlight.

On the second day, we would travel from our primitive campsite above Piute Gorge, to Mojave Camp, along the Mojave Road and just west of Kelso-Cima Road.

Driving Through The Mojave National Preserve
Our drive through the Mojave National Preserve in California starts at the southern end and heads north from Interstate 40 on Kelbaker Rd. The land is full of beauty in that wonderful desert desolation kind of way.
The drive lasts nearly an hour and a half (only forty minutes on video because we sped up it up 170 percent). After a quick photo op at the National Preserve sign and a little lunch at a scenic turnoff, the drive passes the turnoff for Kelso Dunes near the heart of the Mojave. After turning onto Morning Star Mine Road the route quickly passes through the small town of Kelso alongside the Kelso Depot before continuing through the desert. Ahead is a large forest of Joshua trees and endless desert landscapes.
At the north end on the Preserve we take a left onto Ivanpah Road, and then another left onto Nipton Road before joining up with Interstate 15, headed north to the Nevada state line.

The Rings Trail - Mojave National Preserve
The Rings Trail in Mojave National Preserve is one of the best ways to see the unique volcanic formation known as Hole In The Wall Trail. These holes were formed by a violent volcanic eruption that took place 18.5 million years ago. Great camping and scenery are found in the starkly beautiful Mojave Desert.

Overlanding the Mojave Trail
On our way back east from finishing the Trans America Trail, (#usaondirt) We decide to pull off the hwy on the way to Las Vegas for a small overlamding trip on the Mojave Trail / Mojave Road. What an awesome and erie place, though you can get mesmerized by the scenery it's hard not to notice how alone you are when not traveling in a group. It's pretty easy to get off track, and we came close to being lost in the desert. Thanks for modern day tech and a paper map we were able to get back on track.

Mojave Road Day 3 - Traveler’s Monument and a Broken Trailer
The last day on Mojave Road, and the little off-road trailer couldn’t take any more.
Perhaps the best treasure in eastern California's Mojave National Preserve is a pair of tracks that cross the middle of it. This famous trail is the Mojave Road, one of the early routes that brought American pioneers to California. This trail is unique in that for most of its 138 mile stretch it is in much the same condition as the pioneers would have found it, and a lot of the trail passes through country that is virtually unchanged since prehistoric times. The road bisects the Preserve, wandering from waterhole to waterhole, and is mostly a 4-wheel-drive trail.
