Mojiko in Kitakyushu - Mojiko Retro and delicious food at the narrowest point of the Kanmon Straits
Mojiko (Moji Port) 門司港 北九州
Mojiko - Moji Port - is a port in the city of Kitakyushu, in Fukuoka prefecture, and is strategically located at the narrowest point of the Kanmon Straits that separate Kyushu - the island it is on - from the main island of Honshu. Mojiko developed into a major international and domestic port at the end of the 19th century.
Moji was one of five towns and cities that merged in 1963 to become Kitakyushu-shi (Kitakyushu city). Besides Moji, the other merged towns were Kokura, Tobata, Yahata with its main attraction of Space World, and Wakamatsu.
Since the opening of Mojiko as a modern, new port, the area around old Mojiko port has been turned into a tourist attraction under the slogan Mojiko Retro.
Mojiko is small enough to be explored on foot, or bicycles can be rented near the inner harbor.
The terminus of the first railway line built in Kyushu, Mojiko Station is the most likely place of arrival for visitors. Built-in 1914 it is one of the few remaining large wooden stations in Japan and was the first station to be listed as a National Cultural Property.
Mojiko Station is built in a Neo-Renaissance style and is claimed to be based on the old Termini Station in Rome, but that seems unlikely. Until 2018 the station is undergoing major renovations and will likely be shrouded in scaffolding.

The Beautiful Mojiko Retro in Kitakyushu 美しき門司港レトロ in 北九州
After visiting Mimusubi Shrine, we drove over to Mojiko Retro. This port has been around since the beginning of the Meiji Era and has many historical buildings and great sights. It reminds me a lot of the port of Yokohama. I cannot forget to mention the delicious food that Mojiko Retro has to offer. The Kanmon Strait is famous for its Fugu (pufferfish). Everything I sampled was excellent, my first time in Mojiko will be unforgettable. The next episode will be dedicated to Yaki Curry (baked curry). Even though we might have gone a different path and ate Kawara Soba had she not let me taste that Yaki Curry Tempura.
I can't wait for the next video. Let's go get some baked curry.
This video also shows you how to park a car in Japan.

I tried Kawara Soba and Unameshi in Mojiko Retro Kitakyushu
I went to Mojiko Retro to try out Kawara Soba and Unameshi at Ganso Kawara Soba Takase! Kawara Soba originated in Shimonoseki but it is hard to get over to the original restaurant without a car, so I visited their shop in Mojiko Retro.
Ganso Kawara Soba Takase
What is Kawara Soba?
This dish originated in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Apparently during the war, soldiers used to cook on top of heated roof tiles... and the owner of Ganso Kawara Soba Takase took that idea and came up with this. The soba noodles used in this dish have matcha steeped into them, which gives them their distinctive green color. It is topped with pork, shredded egg, seaweed, lemons and the red stuff is momiji oroshi (grated daikon radish with chili pepper). It is delicious!!

Real retro exploring: the back alleys of Mojiko/Sukiccha! Kitakyushu(2019/5/28 O.A.)
Mojiko is known for its Retro District lined with old Western-style buildings. But if you stretch your legs a bit, you can find a network of alleys that harks back to a flourishing era between the latter 19th century and about 1930. When you turn into Sakae Alley from Sakaemachi Gintengai, it’s like going back in time. Head to the Kiyotaki area, and you can explore the inns and little public-houses of Fudozaka as well as what was once a luxurious restaurant. On our program, Sriram Rajaram of Singapore visits a venerable pub and the restaurant Sankiro for his report on retro exploring among the back alleys of Mojiko.

Mojiko (or Moji Port) is a well-preserved historical port town and is the closest town in Kyushu in proximity to the main Honshu island of Japan, just separated by the Kanmon Straits. What's cool is the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel that connects Kyushu and Honshu. It's a 780m undersea tunnel and in the middle you will find the prefectural borders separating Fukuoka (Kyushu) and Yamaguchi (Honshu) prefectures, and is a rare example of a border not found on land!

What is Yaki Curry? Local delicacy from Mojiko, Kitakyushu
What is Yaki Curry? Yaki curry (baked curry) originated in Mojiko and is a popular dish. An egg is cracked over a bowl of rice, and then homemade curry is poured over that, and shredded cheese is sprinked on top before it is all thrown into the oven and baked. The result is a super cheesy curry that tastes really really good.
