Mexican Hat Rock - Goosenecks State Park - Moki Dugway - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.30
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 30th episode, we boondock at Mexican Hat Rock, then visit Goosenecks State Park and drive up the Moki Dugway. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
The name Mexican Hat comes from a curiously sombrero-shaped rock outcropping on the northeast edge of town; the rock measures 60-foot (18 m) wide by 12-foot (3.7 m). The Hat has two rock climbing routes ascending it. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.
Mexican Hat is a census-designated place (CDP) on the San Juan River on the northern edge of the Navajo Nations borders in south-central San Juan County, Utah, United States. The population was 31 at the 2010 census, a sharp decline from the previous two censuses.
The CDP is on U.S. Route 163 just 3 miles (5 km) south of the junction with State Route 261, and is just outside the northern boundary of both the Navajo Nation and Monument Valley. Goosenecks State Park is located just 9 miles (14 km) west.
Goosenecks State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Utah, overlooking a deep meander of the San Juan River. The park is located near the southern border of the state a short distance from Mexican Hat, Utah. Millions of years ago, the Monument Upwarp forced the river to carve incised meanders over 1,000 feet (300 m) deep as the surrounding landscape slowly rose in elevation. Eroded by water, wind, frost, and gravity, this is a classic location for observing incised meanders.
Goosenecks State Park is largely undeveloped. Primitive campsites with picnic tables are scattered back from the edge of the cliff, and vault toilets are available. Campers are advised to bring their own water, food, and other necessary gear.
There are no developed hiking trails in the park, but the Honaker Trail, a few miles to the northwest, provides access to the San Juan River.
(Moki Dugway) State Route 261 is a state highway located entirely within south-central San Juan County, Utah. It runs 34 miles (55 km) north, from the junction of U.S. Route 163 (3 miles (4.8 km) north of Mexican Hat), to the junction with State Route 95, just east of Natural Bridges National Monument.
The highway is part of the Utah section of the Trail of the Ancients, a National Scenic Byway. It includes steep switchbacks as it traverses the Moki Dugway.
From its southern terminus north of Mexican Hat, SR-261 commences in a westerly direction. After turning north, the route encounters the Moki Dugway, becoming an unpaved road. Following this, the road continues north and terminates at SR-95 west of Blanding.
The Moki Dugway was constructed in 1958 by Texas Zinc, a mining company, to transport uranium ore from the Happy Jack mine in Fry Canyon to the processing mill in Mexican Hat. The State Road Commission added SR-261 to the state highway system in 1957, following its present alignment from SR-47 (now US-163) north of Mexican Hat to SR-95.

THE EDGE OF THE WORLD!! (MOKI DUGWAY UTAH) | EP26
Come and join us at the Edge of the World in Moki Dugway Utah. It is Episode 26 of our USA Road Trip adventure across 4 states.
In this episode, we leave the Valley of the Gods (previous episode) and explore a very secluded area of Utah known as Moki Dugway. Which to us, felt like the edge of the world!!
Moki Dugway Utah is known for its multiple switchback cliff-facing dirt track that leads all the way to a look-out. This look-out gives some of the most amazing views of the Utah desert that you will ever see. Unbelievable!
We continued our drive down a sand road to Muley Point East for even more amazing views and finally, to Muley Point.
Absolutely amazing! No tourists whatsoever.
We eventually backtracked and drove back onto the main highway toward Mexican Hat (next episode)
What do you think of this place? Let me know in the comments below?

Moki Dugway, Utah - the scariest road ever!
Scary Drive Up Utah's Moki Dugway
The Moki Dugway is a section of Utah Highway 261 that was cut into the side of a mesa by the Texas Zinc mining company in 1958 as a way to carry ore to a mill in Mexican Hat, Utah. The narrow dirt shelf road climbs 1,200' in 3 miles.
The bottom of the Moki Dugway starts at the intersection western end of the Valley of the Gods Road and UT-261.

Moki Dugway Utah 2018
Moki (Mokee) Dugway.. one of USA's 9 most dangerous roads. Sadly this was a time lapse. I should have thought to stop the timelapse for the day and restart as a video, it would have been far more representative of the narrowness, the danger and the slow speeds necessary to complete this climb and descent . It was an amazing and scary (in places) journey especially in a huge Toyota Sequoia that filled the road and filled the switchbacks at 5kph. Not for the faint of heart. No barriers, no fences. Sudden death drop offs

Dangerous Road in US - Moki Dugway Drive
The Mokee Dugway is located on Utah Route 261 just north of Mexican Hat, UT. It was constructed in 1958 by Texas Zinc, a mining company, to transport uranium ore from the Happy Jack mine in Fry Canyon, UT. to the processing mill in Mexican Hat. The three miles of unpaved, but well graded, switchbacks descend 1100 feet from the top of Cedar Mesa. The State of Utah recommends that only vehicles less than 28 feet in length and 10,000 pounds in weight attempt to negotiate this steep (10% grade), narrow and winding road.

Utah Motorcycle Trip - Part 2: Valley of the Gods and Moki (Mokee) Dugway Adventure Ride
Waking up to a small hail storm and meeting with some dirt bike friends for a motorcycle campout and adventure ride around Valley of the Gods and the Moki Dugway.
This section of Utah was new for me and seeing it on a motorcycle was amazing! Such great views and the mud, hills and rocks were all fantastic and perfect. This is a must see for any ADV motorcycle rider. Great places to camp too and we had a blast hanging out with DirtNapDirtBikeAdventures. Check out their channel here:

Is This CLIFF Highway The Craziest in the United States?
I went with a group to the four corners area down a switch back section of route 261 called the Moki Dugway. This road drops over a thousand feet down the side of the cliff.
At the time, I didn't have a good dash camera or a small GoPro with me.
Were I to do this again I would have had these cameras.

Driving the Moki Dugway 2019
The Moki Dugway is a spectacular switchback road in south eastern Utah, that takes you up almost 2,000 feet to the top of the magnificent bluffs of Cedar Mesa. Unbelievable views and insanely fun drive. Surface is packed unpaved, wide enough to pass, and not dangerous as some suggest (except in snow and ice). Decide for yourself, and if you're in the area, don't miss the chance to drive it!

BEAUTIFUL AMERICA - Part 3 - Moki Dugway, Goosenecks, Monument Valley
Part 3 of this series treks up the Moki Dugway, a heavily-switchbacked pass that winds up to the top of Cedar Mesa. South of the plateau, in the plains is Goosenecks State Park, one of the world's best examples of incised meanders. Finally, the day is ended at possibly the most iconic symbol of America's West, Monument Valley.
