목포 고하도 - Walking in Gohado Island, Mokpo, Jeollanam-do, Korea
It is in a place about 2km apart from Mokpo. Gohado Island, with the inspirational sight of standing while appearing as if embracing Mokpo city's southern coasts, was named so because it is an island below a high mountain (Yudalsan Mountain). It was also called Bohwado Island or Kalseom Island in the past.
It is said that people started living since the age of the Three States, and it was a place used as a strategic location by Admiral Yi Sun-sin during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, and successfully defended against the Japanese invasion. To commemorate this, there is a monument for Admiral Yi Sun-sin (local cultural assets number 39). Also, this area is designated as a historic site for Admiral Yi Sun-sin (local memorial number 10) to honor Admiral Yi Sun-sin's will. Gohado Yongmeori, a gateway to Mokpo harbor, has a beautiful view of Yudalsan Nakjodae terrace and Ildeungbong peak, and at night you can see a beautiful night view of colored lamps harmonized with the ocean view.Gohado is a dragon of the Mokpo coastal waters.
Gohado is seen in its most beautiful shape from Yudalsan Gwanungak Pavillion. Gwanungak Pavilion, although there aren't accurate recorded documents, seems like it was named that was because when it fogs after rain it seems as if clouds stop at the waist of the mountain.This is a place where Admiral Yi Sun-sin was stationed from October 29th, 1597 to February 17th, 1598, for a total of 107 days and reorganized his troops. This island was used as a strategic point by Admiral Yi Sun-sin and has prevented the invasion of Japanese army to the mainland during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. There are traces of the camping by the Admiral and Mochunggak Pavilion, made to honor his services.
고하도(高下島)는 전라남도 목포시 관할 섬으로, 목포 앞바다에서 약 2km 떨어져 있다. 고하도와 북항을 잇는 목포대교가 2012년 6월에 개통되어서 육지와 이어지게 되었다.

Korea's port city to turn into cultural resource haven using old colonial buildings

Colonial architecture was built and used by Japanese army in Korea during the period of Japan's brutal colonial rule.
Some of the remnants remain standing to this day, and Korean government is investing a substantial amount of money to turn them into historical resources.
Cho Sung-min has the story.
Mokpo, a city located in Jeollanam-do Province is widely considered as one of Korea's three biggest port cities.
The city is also home to various historical relics and old buildings that date back to the early 20th century, when Korea was under Japan's colonial rule.
Among these buildings stands out the former Japanese consulate.
The two-story structure made of red bricks has been turned into a museum.
From the wallpapers to the details on the ceiling, most of the building has been restored to how it looked like in the early 1900s.

I didn't know that artifacts from the period still existed. Some of them are nearly 100 years old. Seeing them with my own eyes was more meaningful than reading about them on textbooks.
According to officials, nearly 300 colonial buildings are still standing around the city, situated in the city...and most of them have either undergone renovations or maintained intact through decades.

We are planning to restore other colonial buildings and turn them into museums and exhibition areas. We are also working on the development of cultural tour programs.
The government is set to back Mokpo's plan by injecting nearly 6 million U.S. dollars to the restoration program, paving the way for transforming Mokpo to a hub of culture and historical significance.

Korea Vlog #10 - Suncheon, Korea's Center of Industry & Agriculture
Sogang's student exchange program organized a field trip to tour a city outside of Seoul. Suncheon is a city outside of Seoul that is known for Suncheon Bay which is a wetland reserve. Suncheon also has beautiful gardens as well. Our program chose Suncheon because not many foreigners get to visit this area or partake in some cultural traditions. It was a nice getaway from the city. The specific places we visited was: Suncheon Bay National Garden, Songgwangsa, Seonamsa, and Nagan Eupseong Folk Village (Traditional Korean Village)

Mokpo Natural History Museum is located inside of Gatbawi Neighborhood Park which is one of the major tourism attractions of the southwest coast region in Yonghae-dong, Mokpo-si, Jeollanam-do. The museum consists of a natural history building, local history building and has a total of three floors, two of which are above ground.

Andong is a city on the Nakdong River, in South Korea. It’s known for its open-air heritage museums. Andong Folk Museum uses exhibits and re-enactments to explain traditional ceremonies like weddings. Its outdoor area has thatched houses and a pair of carved totem poles. West of the city, Hahoe Folk Village has tile-roofed homes and traditional food. Nearby, Buyongdae Cliff has expansive river views.
안동시(安東市)는 대한민국 경상북도 중북부에 있는 시이자, 경상북도청 소재지이다. 고려·조선시대에는 안동대도호부가 존재했다. 유교 문화의 고장으로 유명하며, 『한국정신문화의 수도 안동』이라는 슬로건을 사용한다. 하회마을, 도산서원 등 명소가 있고, 많은 문화재들이 보존되어 있다. 시청 소재지는 명륜동이고, 행정구역은 1읍 13면 10동이다. 면적은 서울의 2.5배인 1,520㎢로 대한민국에서 행정구역 면적이 가장 넓은 시이다.

Vladivostock: Economic hub for two Koreas

With the pace of inter-Korean co-operation picking up, there's growing interest from neighboring countries.
One of them is Russia, which maintains friendly relationship with both South and North Korea.
Our Cha Sang-mi flew over to Vladivostok to hear out what the local analysts had to say about Inter-Korean relations in 2019.
Sang-mi, exactly where are you, and do fill us in on how these experts view the future of our cross-border ties?
Daniel, I'm currently in Russia's far eastern city of Vladivostok.
To be more precise, at Eagle's Nest Mount.

Vladivostok is one of the most important port cities in Russia, also the departure point of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
We are here to film a documentary... to hear what Russian experts have to say about the future of inter-Korean relations.
Overall, it seems the Russian public supports the establishment of lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and experts here have been stressing that Russia can geopolitically serve as a key hub for both people and goods.
The chief editor of Vladivostok’s top economic newspaper says the city's residents were very critical of Pyeongyang before the recent peace drive.
As for cooperation among the two Koreas and Russia,... experts identify cooperation on railways and ports as the top priority.
When North Korea was conducting provocations near our Primorski Kray, we evaluated Kim Jong-un's policy to be extremely negative. Russia wanted strict sanctions on the regime. But since the situation improved, with peace talks..., we started to like them. We just wish Kim carries on in this direction.
“We need three-way projects for our countries. I'm talking about big projects using North Korea's and Russia's ports. For instance, the Najin Project is a project that provides Russian coal via North Korea. Secondly, when it comes to the economy, I think South Korean firms can enter North Korean market through Russia, now the North’s market is starting to boom.”
We actually just came back from Hasan, Russia's urban locality adjacent to the North Korean border and saw those railways.
Seoul and Pyeongyang have been discussing the Najin-Hasan Project for a long time, but it hasn't been implemented because of UN-led sanctions.
But this means once the project is live, the course that connects the two Koreas could become its own path of peace.

Park Geun-hye transferred to Seoul Detention Center after arrest

We start with news that former president Park Geun-hye has been arrested.
The Seoul Central District Court announced its ruling at slightly after THREE AM, Korea time.... some four hours ago.
She's been detained on a slew of charges including bribery, abuse of power, coercion and leaking government secrets.
Park becomes the third former South Korean president to be arrested... and if found guilty, she could find herself serving many, many years behind bars.
Let's start at Seoul Detention Center, located in Uiwang , Gyeonggi-do Province,... Park's new home for the foreseeable future.
Our Shin Se-min is there for us.
Semin,... what's the atmosphere like there now? Are we seeing any massive protests from Park's supporters like the ones we've seen around her private residence recently?
The current mood here is rather calm, especially compared to a couple of hours ago when the convoy of vehicles carrying the disgraced former president arrived at the detention center at 4:45 AM.
When she arrived,... Park was driven past a large group of die-hard pro-Park supporters asserting her innocence,... as well as those in support of the court's decision.
The level of security has been reduced somewhat since her arrival and we're seeing less activity outside the facility.
Like you said,... this place is going to be the former president's new reality for up to 20-days.
After that time she will be presented with formal charges of bribery, abuse of power, coercion and leaking government secrets that could see her jailed for at least 10 years... perhaps longer.
Remarkable scenes as the former president was driven inside,... looking visibly tired and anxious. Semin,,, tell us more about what Park will go through at Seoul Detention Center. Will she receive any special treatment as the former leader?
No.
It's fair to say that Park's life of comfort is over now.
As with all suspects brought here,... Park has... or will soon go through a physical checkup,... described as an embarrassing process,... as the guards have to make sure the suspects don't have anything they shouldn't.
She will then be required to change into a yellow and green color prison uniform before being transferred to her solitary cell
Size-wise it will be equal to that of the prison cells assigned to past former presidents who had also served some jail time, which is larger than six-and-a-half square meters.
Just like anyone else entering, she will be stripped off of all her personal belongings and will only be given simple toiletries, a blanket and tableware for her meals.
Here at the facility center, Park will lead her life based on rules and guidelines,... such as getting up at 6-30am and lights out at 9-PM.
She will only be allowed a limited number of visitors a day but she will be allowed unlimited access to her lawyers.
And these rules are also being followed by a number of other once-powerful figures who got mixed up in this scandal.
They are Samsung's de facto boss Lee Jae-yong, the woman at the heart of the scandal Choi Soon-sil,her niece Jang Si-ho, Choi's close associate Cha Eun-taek, the ex-presidential chief of staff Kim Ki-choon and the former culture minister Cho Yoon-sun are all jailed here at the facility.
The Korea Correctional site says they are not allowed any contact with each other.
