Preserving 100 year old Mombasa Monument set for June
These memorials were constructed after WW1 to commemorate all African soldiers and carriers who died in the 1914-18 war and whose final resting place was unknown.
CWGC Africa Technical Manager Mr David McDonald told the Nation in Mombasa that once the sculptures were complete, the monuments were shipped to Africa and constructed in prominent urban locations beginning with Nairobi 1924, Mombasa 1926, Dar es Salaam 1927 and finally in Lagos, Nigeria in 1931.
The 1st phase of this exciting project is being undertaken by 3D Scanners Specialists Luke Abbott and Ben Williams from the United Kingdom.
He says the 3D Scanning process allows us to create a digital replica of the memorials which is accurate to within 1mm. This phase began in Dar Es Salaam on February 7th and the team is currently in Mombasa, before finishing work in Nairobi on February 18th.
In addition to allowing us to preserve a permanent record of the memorials appearance, the 3D Scanning process will allow us to manufacture a number of pieces which have been broken over the years.
He said the 2nd phase of the project is expected to begin in June this year, when they will be back to Mombasa to carry out specialist cleaning and repairs of the memorial which will bring it back to its former glory.
