Mombasa Tusks 10.11.2016
Mombasa Tusks, also known as Pembe Mbili, are ‘M’ shaped aluminium elephant tusk erected in 1952 on most famous road of Mombasa i.e. Moi Avenue to greet the British Queen Elizabeth on her first visit to Mombasa. It is the most important landmark and marks the entrance to the heart of old city which is about 1 km. Pembe Mbili has now become the symbol of Mombasa and a historic component of the city. Right on the side of Mombasa Tusks is located the famous park of Mombasa called Uhuru Gardens. A visit to Mombasa cannot be considered complete without a visit to Pembe Mbili.

The Famous Tusks of Mombasa
Falooq gave me a tour of Mombasa today. Here is a clip of the Mombasa Tusks at the entrance of the town.
The Mombasa Tusks are symbolic representations of entrance into the heart of the town. The tusks were built to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth to the town in 1952, as they lay directly on the path from the port to the town. Ivory was considered to be an exquisite commodity during the time, and in essence the tusks were meant to embrace the Queen and the British Empire into the town and within its social structure. Coincidentally the tusks also spell the letter M for Mombasa.

Mombasa Market Kenya, 1960s -Film 99178
Amateur home movie 1960s.
People in a larger town, most likely Mombasa in Kenya. People crowd around in a group, but it is unclear why. An African man wears a wild blond wig. Panning view of the waterfront city as viewed from the cruise ship, Lindblad Explorer. On land, the ship can be seen in the background. Men rowing small canoes. Street scenes, locals smile from a balcony. A woman carries goods on her head. A busy food market. Local children smiling and very keen to engage with the camera. Some women in the market hurriedly cover their heads or turn away when they see the camera. Women carrying huge stems of bananas on their heads. The women are all dressed in very colourful and highly patterned dresses and scarves. Small outrigger style canoes in the harbour and the cruise ship in the distance.
