JapanTrip Daishoin Temple 600 Stone Lanterns Mori Clan Buddhism Hagi, Yamaguchi 12 Moopon
Japan Travel approximately 600 Stone Lanterns to the Mori Clan Burial Grounds in Daishoin Temple, Hagi, Yamaguchi 12 Moopon
Daishoin Temple (大照院), constructed in 1656, is the Mori Clan family temple. The Mori Clan governed Hagi during the Edo Period (1603-1868). Daishoin Temple belongs to the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. Visitors can see a small Zen garden behind the large wooden main hall.
In the woods behind the temple is an impressive burial site of the Mori lords. Half of the lords are buried here, at Daishoin Temple, with the other half buried at Tokoji Temple. The first lord and odd numbered successors are laid to rest at Daishoin Temple. Visitors are greeted by the hundreds of stone lanterns (donated) which line the pathway to the graveyard. Led by the light from the stone lanterns and being surrounded by the woods, the atmosphere at the burial site is both peaceful and spiritual.
NOTE: There is construction being done to renovate the main hall of Daishoin Temple. Renovation works are expected to continue until 2015. Visitors are still allowed in the temple and can observe the main hall from a makeshift corridor which surrounds the site.
The burial site is not affected by this construction

Miyajima - Momiji-Mangu Making Machine and Daisho-in Temple
Day 18 - Daisho-in Temple
We started off the day by strolling around town looking for breakfast, and stopped by some shop to have a look at them making Momiji-Mangu (sort of like maple-leaf shaped pancakes with red bean filling).
We then heading off to the base of Daisho-in trail to climb Mount Misen. While there, we decided to stop by and have a look at Daisho-in, one of the most unusual temples I have seen.

Wild Japanese Bamboo Forest in the rural area of Yamaguchi. These impressive plants grow to that size in a couple of years. It was quite scary to walk among them the first time when the wind blew: it felt like they were going to fall on me.

Yamaguchi City, capital of Yamaguchi prefecture, is about 1 hour by train West of Hiroshima, the southern most tip of the main island of Japan. It is famous for its history (being the starting place of the Meiji Restoration) seafood (particularly blowfish), politicians (more prime ministers came from Yamaguchi than any other prefecture, including Tokyo), and being the prosperous Kyoto of the West due to its trade connections with the continent. As well as eight prime ministers, Yamaguchi was/is home to: poets Misuzu Kaneko and Chuuya Nakahara, Movide Director Yamada Youji (of Torasan/Otoko wa Tsurai yo fame), Field's prize mathematician Heisuke Hironaka, Uniqlo apparel stores, and comedian Atsushi Tamura of London Boots Ichigo Nigo among many others.
Arashiyama - a bamboo forest in Japan
Quite incredible and one of the highlights of my trip, a bamboo forest in the gardens of Tenryuji Temple in/near Kyoto. For anyone pondering whether or not to go: do it.

Autumn at Osaka Castle in Japan
Preview of our trip to the Kansai area in Japan. We went to the Osaka Castle in mid November 2017 from Manila, Philippines. My husband and I were fortunate enough to witness the changing color of autumn leaves from the different view decks and vantage points within the castle grounds.
