Mon Repos turtle hatchlings Bundaberg, Queensland Australia
The footage is dark because the turtle hatchlings follow light. Too much light and they can become confused and not reach the ocean.
We had the opportunity to stand on the beach and have the turtles crawl between our legs, over our feet, on their dash to make it to water.
A very special experience.
This is at Mon Repos, Bundaberg in Qld.

These turtles hatchlings are in a race to the ocean. Their survival rate is around 1 in 1000. They are so cute.
Foxes, lizards, pigs and birds are all predators on land and there are many more once they make it to the water.

How a childhood spent watching turtles at Mon Repos sparked a lifetime of conservation
Mon Repos, near Bundaberg in the Southern Great Barrier Reef supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and has the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region.
Each year, thousands of turtles descend on Mon Repos to lay their precious clutch of eggs and six weeks later, their hatchlings emerge, dashing from the beach that hopefully one day they will return to.
The loggerhead turtle population in Queensland is recovering thanks to Col Limpus and his dedicated team of volunteers and Park Rangers who over the past 50 years have changed the face of turtle conservation in Queensland.
Visiting Mon Repos is the perfect way to have your own ‘Nat Geo’ moment with the beloved ancient mariners, both big and small.

Mon Repos featured on Sunrise morning show: 23rd January 2014
The Mon Repos Conservation Park near Bundaberg is home to the largest loggerhead turtle rookery in the South Pacific and is a regular nesting site for loggerhead, flatback and green turtles between November and March each year.
Combined with record high tides, the weather events of 2013 caused serious beach erosion, sweeping away an estimated 60 percent of last year's clutches of eggs.
Now, at the height of the 2013/14 season, the turtles are back and in a spectacular display of Mother Nature's bounty, hundreds of hatchlings are emerging from their nests and heading into the big ocean unknown.
Between November and January, mature female turtles burrow deep into the sand in the darkness of night to lay as many as 130 eggs per clutch before returning exhausted to the water. The hatchlings then incubate for eight weeks before breaking out of the nest and hurling themselves toward the ocean.
Head of Queensland's loggerhead turtle research program Dr Col Limpus said the tireless efforts of volunteers and rangers over the past four decades to protect loggerhead turtles in the state's national parks was yielding amazing results.
The sight of an ancient mariner dragging its body up the beach for nesting followed by the moonlit scurry of hundreds of hatchlings into the ocean has become a popular tourism attraction, with ranger-guided turtle tours running seven nights a week during the season.
Dubbed one of Australia's greatest conservation and educational experiences, these tours attract as many as 30,000 tourists from around the world, signalling a global trend towards ecotourism and natural attractions.

Mon Repos : music video tribute to Bert Hinkler
Bert Hinkler is a hero of mine....I discovered his story whilst staying a few days in Bundaberg. Such courage and integrity and so determined.....to be an early aviator and survive you had to be. He was a student of flight and so thorough in his preparation.....unfortunately he met his end in the manner many did, probably due more to the fact that he was pushing himself at the time and of course he was older and in need of funds. 'Mon Repos' was the beach at Bundaberg where he first flew the glider he built and later the name he gave to his residence in England. The museum in Bundaberg is spectacular and includes that same house, brought back from England and rebuilt brick by brick! Truly amazing.....go and see it if you can.
