The profound conviction that all Christians are invisibly bound together by their Baptism in the Risen Christ drove Dom Lambert Beauduin to embark upon the adventure of ecumenism, and in 1925 to found the Benedictine monastery of unity, which subsequently became the monastery of Chevetogne in Belgium. It pioneered the way we still talk about ecumenism, and its sustained work to this day is only due to the stubborn determination of this man and his followers, convinced of the enrichment and benefit offered to Christianity by this unique experiment. A single monastic community, worshipping in the rite and tradition of both the Latin West and the Byzantine East, with nearly a century of engagement with Orthodox, Anglican, Reformed and fellow Catholic Christian in faithful pursuit of the reconciliaiton of Christians and the unity of Christ's Church, Chevetogne is a Catholic monastery unlike any other in Europe.

Polyeleos - Chœur des Moines de Chevetogne
Polyeleos, meaning in greek much mercy, in its main liturgical settings and emplacements consists of a regrouping of psalms 134 and 135, with 'Alleluia' refrains sung between each verse. It is chanted solemnly either during a festive weekly matin service, or during an all-night dominical or festive vigil service.

Monastère de Chevetogne : une vocation oecuménique
C'est en 1925 qu'est fondée l'abbaye de Chevetogne, suite à la lettre du Pape Pie XI demandant aux moines bénédictins de prier pour l'unité de l'Eglise. Dans ce lieu unique au monde, se côtoient quotidiennement des liturgies selon la tradition occidentale latine mais aussi selon le rite oriental byzantin. Pourtant, tous sont catholiques et moines bénédictins. Une manière pour les 26 moines de l'abbaye de rejoindre et de mieux connaître les autres Eglises en priant comme elles, mais aussi de faire découvrir leurs traditions aux chrétiens d'Occident. Travail, recherche théologique, tout dans cette abbaye vise à rencontrer l'autre en profondeur, pour mieux servir l'unité des chrétiens.

Le monastère de Chevetogne, sur le chemin de l'unité dans la diversité
Le monastère de Chevetogne a été fondé à la fin de l’année 1925 par Dom Lambert Beauduin (1873-1960) qui, comme moine de l’abbaye du Mont-César (Louvain), avait auparavant animé le renouveau liturgique en Belgique. La rencontre de l’Orient chrétien a rendu Dom Lambert Beauduin conscient de la division des églises et a inspiré son projet de fonder un monastère dédié à l’unité des chrétiens.
