Skiathos - Monastery of Evangelistria
The holy monastery of Annunciation.
The most remarkable monument of Skiathos. Founded during the Byzantine period (1790-1860) by the monks of Mt. Athos.
In this place the official Greek flag, with the blue background and the white cross in the middle, was raised in 1807.
This is only fully inhabited monastery on Skiathos. The Monks cultivate nearby fields making their own wine, olive oil, honey and other organic produce available for sale.
Skiathos, Greece - Panagia Evangelistria Monastery - AtlasVisual
Skiathos Video Map:
The Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria is located about 5 km north of Skiathos Town. Reachable by car or on foot (1 hour) from the capital of the island, this historical monastery is built on the slopes of a mountainside and it is surrounded by lush greenery. The Monastery of Evangelistria is among the most important religious centers in the Sporades and certainly the most important in Skiathos. Its construction began in 1794 and was completed in 1806. During the years of the Greek Revolution (1820), this monastery played an important role giving shelter to the fighters and refugees and offering money for the economic support of the Revolution. In September of 1807, the first Greek flag (with the white cross on blue background) was weaved and blessed.

About Skiathos:
Skiathos, in Greece, is the most popular of the Sporades, the islands to the east of Volos and north of Evia. It has much to offer people of all ages and nationalities most of whom find themselves returning year after year (like us!). Perfect for families who love a selection of beautiful beaches! Lately the success of the movie Mamma Mia has created a sort of mass-hysteria as people who loved the movie come here and to the neighbouring island of Skopelos, looking for the island depicted in the film.
Beaches:
There are over 60 beaches in Skiathos, all sandy including Koukounaries rated 7th best beach in the world and best in Greece. Also Banana Beach just around the headland is the island's only Naturist Beach and is fantastic and very sheltered. Most of the beaches are easy to get to by bus or moped as they are mostly found on the only main road on the Island. As a rule, the closer you are to town the busier the beach will be. The iconic Lalaria Beach which is accessible by excursion boat is known to lovers of Greece. You catch the boat from the harbour in Skiathos town. Our favourite (must do) beach is Eleni Beach, which is on the far most West side of the island. A beautiful beach with (as of 2019) one of the best beach bars pumping out chilled music (may turn a little more dance/club in high season (August). We also LOVE Koukounaries and Kanapitsa (which has an awesome taverna on the beach).
Transport around Skiathos:
Getting around is very easy. The bus runs the length of the main road every 20 minutes in the summer. We would however recommend car hire as some of the best beaches are not accessible by bus (unless you like a walk - not always practical for young kids). For car hire, we would highly recommend Mustang. Send Magda an email: mustangrent@gmail.com who may also let you use their car park in Skiathos town during your visit (if you ask nicely!)
Eating:
Our recommendations:
Restaurants in Skiathos Town: Carnayo
The Final Step
KonTiki - Old Town Skiathos
Restaurants up in the Skiathos hills: Platanos Skiathos Panorama Restaurant
Beach Restaurants: Kanapitsa Taverna (you can get boat from jetty to Skiathos town from here) Troulos Taverna (Greek Dancing)
Activities:
What you might not know about Skiathos is that it is an awesome base for island hopping to the rest of the Sporades islands! If you haven’t travelled to the Sporades island complex before, you’ll be surprised by its natural beauty. Skopelos island should be your first stop! Skopelos is the island where the famous movie “Mamma Mia” was filmed. The green forests of Skopelos are crossed by lovely hiking paths. These paths lead to spots with breathtaking views, abandoned monasteries, and secret beaches: Stafylos, Panormos, Hovolo, and Elios are among the most beautiful beaches in Skopelos. Also, don’t miss to visit the chapel of Saint John in Kastri. This is where the wedding scene of the Mamma Mia movie was shot!
Ferry to Skopelos: Apart from Skiathos, ferries to Skopelos also depart from the ports of Volos and Agios Konstantinos in central Greece. Excursions from Skopelos island has two ports: Glossa port on the north, and Skopelos Town port on the south. So, double-check that your ferry to Skopelos arrives at the port that serves you!
Check out the Posideon excursions from Skiathos old town harbour for a great day to Skopolos, or for catamaran private hire, we would recommend Captain George boat:
On Skitathos island, we would also recommend a trip to Skiathos Evangelistria Monastery (add a lunch to Platanos or Panarama restaurants above)
Hotels:
The coast of Skiathos is lined with resorts, hotels and villas and you can expect to pay considerably more for a room during the peak summer months. The best time to come is in the off season when finding a room is easier and cheaper. May, June and September are excellent months to be on Skiathos.
Our favourite hotel is the Skiathos Princess (5 star so a little pricey so we don’t always stay here!). It is on the beach of Agia Paraskevi, surrounded by gardens and offers direct access to the white sandy beach. There are also 3 restaurants, 3 bars, and clubs and activities for children and a swimming pool.
We’ve also stayed in various villas around the island: we would recommend Gea Villas
