“Jazz is essentially an African-American folk art, elements not lost on Joe Lovano as he presents this all-original program of progressive music. His updated quintet Us Five is one of his freshest units in some time, with bassist Esperanza Spalding, the criminally underrated pianist James Weidman, and two stir-the-pot drummers in Francisco Mela and Otis Brown III. Together they fulfill Lovano's vision as a band that is not afraid to take many chances, stay within a bop-based tradition, and cut loose on many levels in terms of adding diverse elements to this mix of music. Lovano is noticeably restless, using his reliable tenor sax, but also straight alto, clarinet, and taragato. The drummers not only play their standard kits, but ethnic percussion instruments from many continents, while Spalding is maturing and growing exponentially into a formidable voice on her instrument. Weidman is simply brilliant throughout, largely ignored since his early days with Abbey Lincoln until now, but there's no reason he should be so underestimated or slighted.
Powerhouse is the straitlaced neo-bop tune à la Thelonious Monk that Lovano has always favored.

“Joe Lovano is a modern jazz master, combining the forms and feels of his great predecessors with his own swinging, free jazz, wailing improvisations. In this, his 22nd Blue Note album, he has assembled a new group with whom he jams on a variety of instruments - sax, clarinet, gongs, etc. Still, I'd say it's more an exploration of feels than of sounds. The title track Folk Art (tk 2), for instance, starts with a great vamp for first three minutes, followed by tempered drum solo, devolves into a more traditional swing feel, and ends up back on the vamp. “

“Most jazz musicians are flexible: it’s a philosophical requirement of the job. At 60, Joe Lovano is an extreme case, moving toward universality.
Long ago he developed a tenor saxophone sound for his temperament. It rolls and smears and smokes, all width, rhythmic unto itself; it can fit in or accommodate. His starting place is bebop’s complex language, but he seems to be listening to something underneath language and style, something that could be well illustrated by jazz but isn’t specific to it. He’s good with a particular rhythm, or a structure, or a set of changes, but he doesn’t need any of it. And so an ideal Joe Lovano performance might be one that sounds good with New York’s advanced-harmony killer elite, but that could be effectively cut and pasted over a trap beat or a string quartet or scale exercises or traffic sounds.
More recently, he’s developed a working band for that temperament, Us Five. It has two drummers, which creates a broad area around the beat. They’ll play tight or loose, without cymbals or with only cymbals. Mr. Lovano keeps changing horns, from the tenor to the clarinetlike tarogato and the double-soprano aulochrome; other musicians pick up percussion instruments here and there. Anything can happen, sort of.”
