MONASTRY OF PANAGIA SPILIANI PYTHAGORION SAMOS
Northwest of Pythagorion on Samos, at a height of 125 meters above sea level, is the monastery of Panagia Spiliani or Virgin of the Cave. This little church is dedicated to the presentation of Virgin Mary and it is built inside a large cave. In the church we find a marble icon of Virgin Mary, which is considered miraculous.
According to a legend, the icon was stolen by some strangers, and as they unloaded from the boat, the icon fell into the ocean and broke down. After a long time, the parts returned to the island of Samos and the icon was restored to its original state. Archaeologists believe that even in ancient times, this cave was a place of worship, part of an ancient temple found inside. Moreover, in the Byzantine era, this cave was a Christian church. The monastery of Panagia Spiliani is situated on a hill and gives a great view to Pythagorion.
Panagia Spiliani Samos
The Monastery of Panagia Spiliani is built inside a cave, few miles northwest of Pythagorion. It is actually a cave-pit (or a cave church). The dimensions of the pit are: 120 x 36 meters, while its depth is 8,5 meters. It is located at an altitude of 109 meters. It was first explored by I. Petrohilos 7/1952 [Hellenic Speleological Society (Hellenic Speleological Registry 204)].
The monastery is located in an area full of trees, while is dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to ancient accounts, the cave was a place of worship since ancient times. In fact, experts claim that Pythagoras established a philosophical school, in the place where the monastery stands today.
The monastery’s priceless relic is the old miraculous icon of Panagia Spiliani (The Blessed Virgin Mary of the Cave), which has undergone many damaged, thus it is cracked. According to the local tradition, the cracking is due to the efforts made by some foreigners to steal and transfer the icon, in their place, by ship. Locals say that the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, wishing to remain in Samos, split and sank in the sea. It was later found on the beach and it was returned in the Church. This is why the icon is also known with the name “Kaliarmenissa”, since the icon sailed back to the island by itself.
Next to the cave, a small chapel is built to honor Saint George, while, inside the cave, holy water gushes out from the ground.
Walking down the stairs, if you look on to the right and left you’ll observe the manual cut of the stone. Even deeper, you’ll see the columns left behind to support the roof and few stalactites.
It is possible that this place housed the Oracle of Sibyl (600-500 BC). The oracle prophesized Pythagoras’s journey to South Italy, and his intellectual evolution.

Entry:
THE MONASTERY OF PANAGIA SPILIANI
(the cave of Virgin Mary) - cave means spileo, and Panagia is Virgin Mary.
The Monastery of the Panagia Spiliani is situated on the hill behind Pythagorio. The view from the small open area is impressive as we gaze caresses the Aegean all the way to the Turkish shores and from Pythagorio with the Kastro of Logothetis (the castle) up to Ireon.
The small twin churches are dedicated to the Panagia (Virgin Mary) and Saint George- (Agios Georgios).
Entering the cave we see in the depths of the cave a very old chapel-shrine. The Church is built at a depth of 94 steps from the cave's entrance.
Three hand-made tanks collect the water that slowly drips from cracks in the rocks. The darkness together with the sound of water dripping --which is the only sound heard inside this tranquil and devout place -- creates an especially emotional feeling for the visitor.
A legend tells us how the icon broke:
Many years ago some strangers came here out of devoutness by caique to secretly take the sacred icon back to their land, but the Virgin Mary did not want to leave Samos. So as they took the icon out of the caique it fell into the sea, breaking into five pieces. But the icon managed to return back to Samos where the Samians found it on the beach and returned it to the chapel.
It is also thought that the cave was a place of refuge for Pythagoras.
