Greek-Orthodox: Monastery Of Saint John The Theologian, Patmos (Greece) • Abbeys and Monasteries
Island of the Apocalypse, of bare rocks and bays, crowned by the grey crenellated walls of a huge, grim monastery. Patmos has 37 monks besides 2000 inhabitants, 600 chapels, and a 100.000 tourists in summer… Still ancient Patmos weathers the onslaught of tourism in many unique ways. The monks, all 'local boys', who watch their parents till the soil and brothers sail the seas, carefully guard the integrity of their island and its community, from behind the great cloister walls. As if standing on the bridge of a ship, steering it through the tempest of time.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Greece and let's go to the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian (also called Monastery of Saint John the Divine) which is a Greek Orthodox monastery founded in 1088 in Chora on the island of Patmos. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site. It is named after St. John of Patmos. Patmos, an Aegean island in the north of Greece’s Dodecanese island group, is a significant Christian pilgrimage site. Its Cave of the Apocalypse is where John of Patmos (St. John the Theologian) is said to have written the Book of Revelations. A fortresslike, 11th-century monastery dedicated to the saint overlooks the whitewashed houses of the hilltop capital, Hora (also known as Chora).

Windmills of the Monastery of St John the Theologian, Chora, Patmos, GREECE
Who could resist a sense of exhilaration at the sight of these windmills, in a row, on top of the island, fully restored and spinning against the sky? The jury was asked to consider several different mills from across Europe for this year's awards and comparisons were therefore inevitable. Among the windmills, the jury agreed that this group in Patmos was outstanding in the detail and completeness of its restoration, and the imaginative uses to which each mill was to be put for future production or education. As a group, the three form an integral part of the island landscape's aesthetic as well as contributing to its economy as an important and original example of proto-industrial heritage.

Revelation of St. John the Theologian
After the taking up of our Lord Jesus Christ, I John was alone upon Mount Tabor, where also He showed us His undefiled Godhead; and as I was not able to stand, I fell upon the ground, and prayed to the Lord, and said: O Lord my God, who has deemed me worthy to be Your servant, hear my voice, and teach me about Your coming. When You shall come to the earth, what will happen? The heaven and the earth, and the sun and the moon, what will happen to them in those times? Reveal to me all; for I am emboldened, because You listen to Your servant.

___________________________
After a much needed body baptism in my luxurious hotel pool, I set out for the sole purpose of coming to the small, hilly island of Patmos.
Both rich in history and natural beauty. The island is also home to the final text and chapters of the Holy Bible. The Cave of the Apocalypse is situated about halfway up the mountain on the Aegean island of Patmos, along the road between the villages of Chora and Skala. This grotto is believed to mark the spot where John of Patmos received his visions that he recorded in the Book of Revelation.
Above that on the highest point of the capital city is The Monastery of St. John the Divine a fortified Orthodox monastery.
Even while filming in-between and around the “no photos or videos” rule, there is still much beauty captured from these places of peace and power.

Vidoe Tour to the Monastery of Saint John in the Wilderness - Saint John in the Desert
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Watch A VIDEO TOUR to the Monastery of St. John in the Wilderness.
The Monastery of St. John in the wilderness is a Franciscan monastery built next to a spring, on a wooded slope just south of Jerusalem and not too far from Ein kerem, the village where John the Baptist was born.
It is believed that here in this grotto was the home of St. John as he was experiencing Scripture study out in the wilderness. Right next to this cave, there is a ritual bath for purification - the crystal spring water flows from an ancient channel and then down to a pool.
Luke tells us, that John grew and became strong in spirit and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel (Luke 1:80). The word desert often refers to uncultivated land, but here it actually means pastureland - like this area.
The monastery includes a small chapel as we see here and a beautiful dining room decorated with painted icons.
Every year on Jun 23rd, a day before celebrating the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the Franciscan conducts an evening prayer service to commemorate John the Baptist as grown by spirit here in the Wilderness.

It was here St. John had his vision and wrote the apocalypse, and this is why Patmos is sometimes called The Jerusalem of the Aegean.
