Chora, Skyros Island Greece
Embedded subtitles in Eng - Subtitles in Gr
Skyros is an island in the Aegean Sea. The capital of Skyros is built on a tall rock. It is also called Skyros (or locally Chora). The houses are built amphitheatrically next to each other. In earlier times they created a wall to protect against pirates. Chora’s castle dates from the Venetian occupation (13th to 15th centuries). Below the castle there is the Byzantine Monastery of Saint George. From this point we enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of the island's NE coasts. After the 2001 earthquake, for security reasons, the entrance was closed, until recently. The cobbled narrow streets give off the image of a bygone era.

Best of SKYROS Island, beaches and attractions | exotic Greece
Skyros is an island in Greece, the southernmost of the Sporades, an archipelago in the Aegean Sea. Around the 2nd millennium BC and slightly later, the island was known as The Island of the Magnetes where the Magnetes used to live and later Pelasgia and Dolopia and later Skyros. At 209 square kilometres it is the largest island of the Sporades, and has a population of about 3,000.
According to Greek mythology, Theseus died on Skyros when he was thrown from a cliff.
Rupert Brooke, the famous English poet, is buried on Skyros, having died on board a French hospital ship moored off the island in 1915, during World War I.
The north of the island is covered by a forest, while the south, dominated by the highest mountain, called Kochila, (792 m), is bare and rocky. The island's capital is also called Skyros (or, locally, Chora). The main port, on the west coast, is Linaria. The island has a castle (the kastro) that dates from the Venetian occupation (13th to 15th centuries), a Byzantine monastery (the Monastery of Saint George), the grave of English poet Rupert Brooke in an olive grove by the road leading to Tris Boukes harbour. There are many beaches on the coast. The island has its own breed of Skyrian ponies.
The least famous island of Sporades, Skyros is located in the center of the Aegean Sea. Skyros island is a place with vivid tradition and special character. Chora is located along the slopes of a hill, offering great view to the Aegean Sea. Walk around the narrow streets of Chora, have a relaxing coffee and explore the Medieval Castle above the town. The most popular beach on the island is Molos, a long crystal coast with many tourist facilities. Around the island, there are equally beautiful places with fewer facilities and totally relaxing atmosphere. Ferry to Skyros Greece departs from the port of Kimi in Evia island, while in summer there is local ferry connection to Skopelos and Alonissos.
The island with a character all its own. A scenic town (Hora), wonderful beaches, the Skyrian horse, the intricate wood-carved furniture, the monastery of Aghios Georgios with its miraculous icon and a famous carnival will offer you unforgettable holiday experiences.
