Mondo-Yakujin, also known as Shotaizan Tokoji Temple, is a Buddhist temple in Nishinomiya.
Nishinomiya is just 17 minutes from Osaka by train on the Hankyu Imazu Line.
On the 18th and 19th January every year the Warding Off Evil Festival takes place here. Every year hundreds of thousands of people from all over Japan come to Mondo-Yakujin for the festival.
Chanting Buddhist monks at the entrance to the Temple welcome visitors.
To offer prayers for the protection against evil, it is believed that by climbing one step at a time, each step sheds a misfortune. Men climb a route of 42 steps, whilst women ascend the side with 33 steps.
Smoke from burning incense is used for healing. People waft the smoke to parts of the body they want healed.
It is believed the temple was founded by Kōbō-Daishi in 829. Kōbō-Daishi (774–835) was a Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Shingon or True Word school of Buddhism.
Frog is 'kaeru' in Japanese, and kaeru also means to return. Here, there are frog statues where you can pray for things once lost to return.
Also here is Takano-san Okunoin - the root of an 800 year-old cedar tree. People touch the root in the hope of prolonging life.
People buy omikuji (fortunes), and to help stop any bad predictions coming true they tie them in a bow on a frame. A petrified tree trunk (in the ground for 80 million years) is thought to hold the magical powers of nature.
In the Jizodo, on behalf of paying worshippers, monks will offer prayers to Jizo - the most popular Buddha in Japan.

Imazu - Nishinomiya Kitaguchi commute view
EDIT: I discovered that the narrator at 0:49 doesn't say something about the station being an intersection, but is telling the passengers they can exit the train from the left side.
As I'm currently studying in Japan, I decided to show my family the AMAZING view I have from the train on (this half of) my commute.
I subtitled it, but cannot guarantee that what I wrote is the exact translation. This is just my interpretation considering context and past experiences. Please enjoy the view!
