Monfragüe National Park, Extremadura ( Spain)[IGEO TV]
Monfragüe is located in Extremadura (Spain), in Cáceres province, near to the cities of Plasencia, Trujillo and Navalmoral de la Mata. Its backbone is the Tajo River that elapses through gentle mountains and extensive pastures.
Since becoming a protected space, has consolidated itself as a perfect place for bird-watching (birding). In this park you can enjoy the flight of black storks, vultures, imperial eagles or Egyptian vultures. Monfragüe also includes some unique landscapes and vegetation, one of the best preserved examples of Mediterranean forests. Thanks to these unique characteristics, in 2007 was constituted as a National Park.
But Monfragüe counts also with numerous samples of human presence throughout history, since the landscape offers the conditions for human settlement, such as water, forest with fruits, hunting, etc... The most remarkable human remains are the paintings that shelter
Monfragüe mountain ridge, highlighting the Castle Cave, southern to the Corchuelas Range. The area surrounding the park lists numerous remains from different periods, both pre-Roman and Roman, being these to which we owe the current name, since he was named as Monsfragorum(dense hill).
During the Middle Age, these lands have been marked by the Muslim occupation where, according to the chronicles of the time, the Monfragüe Castle was built, reaching today the remains of numerous restorations that were made by military orders which captured this stronghold . The round tower is from the XII century and the pentagonal tower from the XV century.
In the XV century was built also the Cardenal Bridge, facilitating communications between Plasencia and Trujillo. Inside the National Park we find only one settlement, Villarreal de San Carlos, which is a district that belongs to the town of Serradilla , which was founded by Charles III to control the robberies performed by bandits in the area.

Monfrague is a comarca of Extremadura, western Spain, which contains one of the country´s
fifteen National Parks in Spain.
From 1979 the area was protected as a national park until national park status was garanted in 2007.Since 2003 it has been recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere reserve. The park is north
of Trujillo and runs from east to west along the valley of the river Tagus. It includes a long
mountainous ridge, which the river has cut through, creating on the western side an impressive
rock face,the Penafalcon.On the eastern sideis the Castle of Monfrague. The River Tjeter enters
the park from the north-east and joins the Tagus just to the east of Penafalcon. There is only
one village in the park,Villareal de San Carlo.

Cáceres is a city in western Spain's Extremadura region. Founded by the ancient Romans, Caceres retains widespread evidence of subsequent occupation by many different cultures. Caceres old town, Ciudad Monumental, has a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, with cobbled medieval streets, fortified houses and palaces. Encircled by 12th-century Moorish walls, it also has around 30 towers, some occupied by nesting storks.
Caceres is the capital of Cáceres province, in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. The walled city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There have been settlements near Cáceres since prehistoric times. Evidence of this can be found in the caves of Maltravieso and El Conejar. The city was founded by the Romans in 25 BC. The Old Town (Parte Antigua) still has its ancient walls; this part of town is also well known for its multitude of storks' nests. The walls contain a medieval town setting with no outward signs of modernity, which is why many television shows and films have been shot there . The Universidad de Extremadura, and two astronomical observatories are situated in Cáceres. The city is also a seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Coria-Cáceres. Cáceres was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1986 because of the city's blend of Roman, Moorish, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance architecture. Thirty towers from the Islamic period still stand in Cáceres, of which the Torre del Bujaco is the most famous.

Monfragüe National Park: It encompasses 85 km2 (33 sq mi) or 17,852 hectares. The park contains one of the largest areas of Mediterranean forest and scrub in Spain with over 1,400 different species of trees. A favorite with birdwatchers, the park has the world's largest colony of Black Vulture and Spanish Imperial Eagle.
Los Barruecos Natural Monument, 14 kilometres (9 miles) away from the city, in the locality of Malpartida de Cáceres. It has massive granite boulders with the only colony of White Stork nesting on them. There is also a medieval reservoir and a mill for wool washing. The building complex has been restores and houses a surprising collection of art by German artist Wolf Vostell, who was an important member of the fluxus movement. Spring brings an explosion of colour with the blossom of Spanish White Broom all pervasive in the area.

The Monfragüe National Park is today one of the world’s last remaining paradises of Mediterranean fauna and flora, a unique enclave where man seems to have achieved the difficult balance between exploitation and conservation of nature.
Both inside the park and in the area surrounding it, there are meadows with oak and cork trees, the result of the constant influence of humans on the landscape. The forests have been cleared, and bushes removed, in favour of the pasture necessary for the development of intensive cattle-rearing.
Along the steepest slopes, plant-life has remained unchanged, and shrubs cover the forest floor. There is very little variety of fruits on the meadows, but there is one which is very abundant, and very nutritious – the acorn. This seed, produced by the oaks and the cork trees, and greatly appreciated by the wild boar and domesticated pigs, is also the favourite food of one of the most common birds in Monfrague: the wood pigeon.
The wild cat represents one of the final links in the food chain, the system which decides who eats who in nature. At the bottom, holding up the entire structure, are the rodents and the insects.
Just above them come the reptiles, like this ocellated lizard, the largest lizard in the Iberian Peninsula.
The lizard, in turn, is often eaten by the wild cats. All the links in the food chain are dependent on each of the others, and any change in one link will affect all the rest.
Another of the predators of Monfrague, the genet, was introduced into the Iberian Peninsula by the Arabs in the eighth century AD. For a hundred years, it was a valuable ally of man – it is an excellent rat- and mouse-catcher. However, the domestic cat took over this job, the genet was used less and less by man, and today they are entirely wild.
The genet will happily eat fruit, but it is mainly carnivorous, and prefers hunting at night, when it can take advantage of the fact its prey is resting. Its sight, smell and hearing are all very acute and, thanks to its sharp retractile claws, it can climb up tree trunks and reach even the most inaccessible nests. Its agility and skill in hunting make it one of the most efficient predators in the forest.
Extensive cattle rearing is one of the traditional activities permitted within the park. The ecological damage it causes is minimal, and more than compensated by certain advantages for the wildlife of the area. In return for the grass they eat, the cattle leave a very valuable gift: their dead.
Every time a sheep dies in Monfrague, a complex system goes into action, in order to dispose of the body.
Yet another species of vulture can also be found in Monfrague – the black vulture, the largest bird of prey in the Iberian Peninsula, and very rare. The park has proven to be an ideal habitat, and numbers have risen – Monfrague is now home to the largest colony of these birds in the world, with over 250 pairs officially counted.
Meadows, virgin forests, crystalline streams and waters held back by the dams – Monfrague is Mediterranean forest, and much more. For 6,00 years, men have lived here and respected the natural environment. Man’s past and man’s future. A unique combination, where conservation and exploitation have achieved that difficult balance which it is man’s duty to strive to maintain.

Wild Spain - Capítulo 18 - Parque Nacional de Monfragüe, Cáceres
Unos de los dos Parques Nacionales españoles dedicados al bosque mediterráneo, genuinamente ibérico. Y uno de los más conocidos a nivel internacional debido a la facilidad de acceso y a que podemos observar aves amenazadas fácilmente. Como es el águila imperial ibérica, la cigüeña negra o el buitre negro. También destacan sus colonias de buitres leonados. También se pueden ver ciervos con facilidad. La Portilla del Tiétar por la entrada de Plasencia y el Salto del Gitano ya a la salida del Parque hacia Torrejón el Rubio, son dos puntos de referencia para la observación de las aves. Una carretera cruza todo el Parque Nacional, pot lo que su visita es muy cómoda. Hay varias rutas para hacer y poder observar su interesante fauna.

We enjoyed a couple of days in the Monfrague National Park. We took a guided tour of the park with Valentin, a charming knowledgeable English speaking Spanish gentleman. The Raptor tour was suggested by our charming host Celia of the Camping Monfrague. (Fresh baguettes every morning).
Monfrague is a Special Biosphere Reserve, with a diversity of wildlife, and amazing birds. The park has a new and informative visitors centre.
The park is located between Plasencia and Caceres.
BirdingBreaks goes Extremadura (april 2018)
Van 14 t/m 20 april 2018 heeft een groep van 13 vogelaars samen met twee vogelgidsen een trip gemaakt door Extremadura (Spanje). Vanuit het plaatsje Trujillo zijn binnen een week tijd diverse interessante vogelgebieden bezocht, waaronder de vlakte van Campo Lugar, het Nationaal Park Monfrague en diverse stuwmeren. In totaal heeft het reisgezelschap 147 verschillende vogelsoorten gespot evenals diverse mooie orchideeen. De ontdekking van twee visetende otters in de Almonte rivier vormde een van de hoogtepunten van deze reis. Met dank aan onze gidsen Godfried Schreur (BirdingBreaks) en Chris Verheijen (Vogelbescherming Nederland).
