Rehabilitated monkeys scamper about on Monkey Island, an island in the Rio Madre de Dios near Puerto Maldonado, Peru, in the Peruvian Amazon. These monkeys were captured when young and raised as pets before being abandoned, and the island serves as a kind of 'halfway house' where they can recover their natural instincts. Local tour guides use it as a tourist area, as the monkeys are comfortable enough with people to allow themselves to be filmed and photographed while they eat fruit.

La Isla De Los Monos (Monkey Island), Iquitos Peru Wildlife Sanctuary in the Amazon Jungle
Here at LIDLM the animals are deeply cared for. They are in paradise, eating bananas, playing with fellow monkeys, humans, and their property dog. Gilberto has been running this sanctuary for 20 years and it has been so special to see his love for his work and the animals he cares for.
Visiting La Isla de Los Monos was the highlight of our honeymoon. We spend 2 days and one night being served homemade local food, day tours included fishing in the Amazon River for piranha, we saw a freshwater dolphin, hiking through the jungle, and a local medicinal plant tour. On the LIDLM site we visited with Woolly monkeys, Spider monkeys, a baby Howler monkey, a Tamarin monkey, sloths, and a happy pup. These animals were never enclosed and eager to play! Thank you so much for making our trip so special!

The Amazonian jungle at Puerto Maldonado Peru
In the Amazonian jungle at Puerto Maldonado are a number of animals and plants to be seen, such as the coati, the walking palm, the black and the white capuchin monkeys, a Heliconia with bright red flowers, a centipede, a wild cacao tree bearing a fruit and a justice tree. The walking palm moves because it grows stilt roots at the side of the light while the stilt roots on the shadow side die off. The justice tree is used by the local Indians to execute their criminals by tying them to the tree which harbors fire ants with venomous bites.
