Nusa Lembongan is an island located southeast of Bali, Indonesia. It is part of a group of three islands that make up the Nusa Penida district, of which it is the most famous. This island group in turn is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands.

My journey with my friends to Indonesia - Banyak Islands Cimaja Bali G-Land Nusa Lembongan Mentawai Islands 24/4/2010 - 26/6/2010

BALI TRAVEL Uluwatu & Nusa Penida｜Samsung S8 & Nikon D3300

As a whole – our experiences in Uluwatu and Nusa Islands were amazing! These places perfectly combine the local culture, delicious food as well as breathtaking views and beaches. If you decide on going to Bali you should definitely give this a try!

Uluwatu – the surfer’s paradise

Uluwatu is the most popular area on Bali’s Bukit peninsula, best known for the namesake landmark cliff-top temple. The hilly limestone region is home to Bali’s most scenic luxury villas and resorts, with facilities on towering cliffs, overlooking the Indian Ocean and magnificent sunsets. The cliff-fringed coastline is also home to hidden beaches and world-class surf breaks, a mecca for wave riders from the world over.
We spent 3 days in Uluwatu- time in which we have visited Suluban Beach and Uluwatu temple. The taxi from the airport to the hotel was around 250.000 indonesian rupiah (14£-18$) – a fair price for a one hour drive.
We stayed at the Ayodhya Uluwatu hotel for the entire stay- a bit expensive due to the proximity to the beach.
Walk down through the steep ally ways and explore the area. It really is stunning from both above at all the bars and down below.
Suluban beach is at the base of an enormous cliff and it is not accessible in the morning because of the high tide.
The restaurants in the area have an amazing view of the ocean and I would strongly recommend watching the sunset while having a cocktail at one of these places.

Uluwatu Temple

This is one of the biggest attractions in the area- we recommend you visit it as early in the morning as possible (opening hours 09-18) as it tends to get very busy. You can enjoy the amazing view from the top of the cliffs where the temple is located. You can spend some time walking around and taking in the culture and vibe of the place.
The temple is inhabited by monkeys, who are notorious for snatching visitors' belongings. They can usually be persuaded into trading the items for fruit, although this only encourages them to steal more.

Nusa Islands

In order to get to Nusa Islands you can get a taxi or a shuttle bus from the airport to the port in Sanur where you can get a boat to the island. There are a lot of companies that provide boat services so you should not have any issues getting there at any time but it would be advisable to try to get there in the morning as it can get quite busy (especially during the high season).

Out of the 3 islands we chose Nusa Lembongan as it is the most tourist friendly – but we explored the other 2 islands as well
(Ceningan & Penida)
We stayed in the N-E of the island at the Sukanusa Luxury Huts - a great location for an affordable price.
You can explore the mangrove forest which is a 5 minute drive away or 20-30 min walking. You can also rent a kayak and explore the forest on your own or you can have one of the locals show you around on a boat (for around 100 k) – a good price for such an experience.
You can get around the island by motor bikes (around 70 k per day) or with a taxi. We would recommend the first option, but you need to keep in mind that the roads and very narrow and broken so if you have no experience with a motor bike it might be a bit challenging .
You would need one day to explore Nusa Lembongan – enough time to spend a couple of hours on Dream beach and see the huge waves at Devil’s Tear.

Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three and the least busy- you can get here by motor bike by crossing the Yellow bridge.
The ride is easy and relaxing and you can soend an entire afternoon relaxing on Secret brach ( one of the moat beautiful beaches around). If you have time we recommend exploring the entire island in order to interact with the locals and learn more about the way they live.

Nusa Penida is the biggest of the islands and the least touristy of them all - we loved it. The boat trip from Nusa Lembongan takes around 30 min. You can go for a private boat ride or a public one
(ask the reception of your hotel, they should be able to provide more info regarding times )
As this island is bigger than the others I would recommend spending two days here in order to be able to see everything. The main roads are in perfect condition , but the smaller less popular ones might take a bit longer to get used to. We spent one day here and and we decided to see the Crystal Bay beach and the famous Kelingking beach. As we didn’t have too much time we didn’t get the chance to explore the N-E side of the island , but there’s always next time!

PS: Meet the incredible Manta in Nusa Lembongan, Bali

Nusa Lembongan is next to, more famous and smaller than Nusa Penida.

At first, I was a bit reluctant to visit Nusa Lembongan. I thought it's gonna be another tourist trap.

But, I met a girl from Jember who lives in Bali when I was in Nusa Penida and she convinced me that I would have an amazing experience on the island.

So, I decided to spend 24 hours on the island before catching the turtle bus to Ubud.

Oh Boy!! It was amazing and if I hadn't booked a hotel in Ubud, I would probably stay longer.

The highlight of this trip were meeting Manta Rays and Nemo.
