Hunting for the elusive Whitby jet
On the coast again, this time we are looking for Whitby jet. It's around 180 million years old, it’s fossilised monkey puzzle tree and is extremely hard to find, hopefully we will find some, fingers crossed :-)
Here is a Victorian Whitby Jet button I found. Its beautifully engraved. Jet, often found and worked in Whitby and was very popular in the Victorian period, thanks to Queen Vic and her years of mourning. Jet itself is a fossil from the Monkey Puzzle Trees, which are still around today, although quite rare, often found in Arboretums. Anyway, very sweet, happy find.????
Site Diary: How To Recognise Jet
Across the site, we've been finding chunks of jet, made from fossilized monkey puzzle tree. The problem is, it looks a lot like coal. Here's how to recognise it.

Jet (lignite)
Jet is a geological material and is considered to be a minor gemstone. Jet is not considered a true mineral, but rather a mineraloid as it has an organic origin, being derived from decaying wood under extreme pressure. The English noun jet derives from the French word for the same material: jaiet. Jet is either black or dark brown, but may contain pyrite inclusions, which are of brassy colour and metallic lustre. The adjective jet-black, meaning as dark a black as possible, derives from this material.
