Monkman Cascades - Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada

Monkman Provincial Park in Northeastern BC, south of the town of Tumbler Ridge, is an area of beautiful mountain scenery. The hiking trail to Monkman Lake is popular with backpackers looking for a great trip into the heart of the park. The area is rich in history as well. In the 1930's a group of pioneers from northern Alberta scouted and built the Monkman Pass Road. This was developed as a shorter route to the west coast for the agricultural products of the north. Unfortunately, the Second World War interrupted these plans, but not before a model T car loaded with a symbolic bag of grain was pushed, pulled, and dragged through what is now the park and over the continental divide.
As beautiful as the trail to Monkman Lake is, it bypasses the most spectacular feature of the park - the Monkman Cascades. These are a series of ten stunning waterfalls along Monkman Creek that thunder over rock ledges, separated by placid pools. (

Ice Climbing the Monkman Cascades - FIRST ASCENT near Tumbler Ridge, BC - Monkman Provincial Park
I've always wanted to go ice climbing, so what better way to learn at -30C than by climbing a series of waterfalls that have never been climbed before. 600 km of driving, 60 km of snowmobiling, 40 km of snowshoeing, and 10 cascades in less than 2 days. On February 9th, 2017, Ryan Bowie, Matt Dawes and I completed the first ascents of Lower Moore Falls, Upper Moore Falls, Brooks Falls, Shire Falls, Monkman Falls, McGinnis Falls, Chambers Falls, and made it back to Tumbler Ridge in time for a Chinese food lunch on the 10th.

British Columbia 2013 Part 4: Monkman Provincial Park
A few pictures from the 14 hour drive to Monkman, but most of this video is set in Monkman Provincial Park, a very isolated park in northern BC. I was the only person in the entire park, which speaks volumes to the park's isolation. I have never felt as uneasy as I was in this park, not even when I was charged by a bear in Washington. This, along with Glacier, was a favorite stop.

Kinuseo Falls, about 70 meters high (230 feet) is on the Murray River, which flows through Monkman Provincial Park and the community of Tumbler Ridge. This video was shot on June 15, 2018 at the base of the falls, accessed by an informal and very steep trail.

Spring Hike on Mount Spieker - Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia
Welcome to the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark! Routes on flat-topped Mt. Spieker make for excellent hiking through intriguing geological scenery. The summit plateau, and the vertical cliffs which support it, are formed from rocks of the Gates Formation which were deposited in the Lower Cretaceous Period. Coal seams from this rock formation have allowed for the development of the metallurgical coal resources in the Tumbler Ridge area.
The finest scenery is reached by ascending to the saddle ahead, then keeping right and heading northeast and then north, to the end of the mountain. This route leads past areas of thickly bedded sandstone and conglomerate bedrock, deeply cracked in many places to create small grottos which are suitable for rock scrambling and exploring. There are a number of alpine tarns amongst the rocks.
Towards the end of this route the mountain is bounded by vertical cliffs on its east and west sides, which tend to separate and break off to create fine rock scenery. The ridge narrows to the north, until it squeezes down to a narrow strip just a few metres wide, dubbed the Neck. This has an impressive pattern of intersecting cracks. Below the cliffs on the east side are two small lakes. The summit beyond the Neck forms a worthy turnaround point, and offers good views. It is then possible to return via the actual summit, 1971 metres above sea level.
There are areas with large quartzite erratics strewn on conglomerate bedrock. In other areas thinner-bedded rock layers predominate, with impressive cross-bedding, an indicator of ancient river or tidal currents which deposited sand grains.

Junior Canadian Rangers in Monkman Provincial Park!
Welcome to the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark!
In June, 2017, the Junior Canadian Ranger group from Tumbler Ridge camped for two nights at the Kinuseo Falls Campground in Monkmam Provincial Park. During their stay, the JCRs learned survival skills and teamwork, visited Slate Falls and Kinuseo Falls, and flew over the Monkman Cascades, Monkman Lake, and Mount Gauthier. I had the privilege of joining them.

Winter Trek to the Monkman Cascades - Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia
Welcome to the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark! In February 2016, six adventures trekked into the Monkman Cascades, a series of ten waterfalls in Monkman Provincial Park, with the hopes of ice climbing each of the ten cascades. Unseasonably warm temperatures made the trek interesting. Open water on Monkman Creek was an obstacle. The team was able to climb Cascade #8, and a seep across from Lower Moore Falls. After scouting with a UAV, the decision was made to not proceed any further than Lower Moore Falls, due to unfavourable ice conditions. This video features the hike in on the Murray River and Monkman Creek, the camp above Cascade #10, the ice climb up Cascade #8, and the climb of the Tonsure. Enjoy!

Hiking the Monkman Memorial Trail
July 2014 myself and 7 friends hiked the first 24 kms of the Monkman Memorial Trail located in Monkman Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada.

Drive and walk in Monkman Provincial Park. We stopped on the way back to take pictures of the snow blowing off the mountain tops. Monkman Park is a short drive from Tumbler Ridge BC and is home to the famous Kineseo Falls!
