Luxury cottage on Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, Wales
Situated on our private wharf just outside Abergavenny, this Grade II-listed cottage was originally the home and office of the wharfinger -- the man who managed the busy wharf. This detached self-catering cottage for 6 people, set in 30 acres of broadleaf woodland on the side of the Blorenge mountain, is located in both the Brecon Beacons National Park and Blaenavon World Heritage Site. Wharfinger's Cottage may be hired for a relaxing waterside break or can be combined with time on our boats (available March to October) for a longer holiday.
Llangynidr & Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal Walk, Brecon Beacons Walks In Powys, Walks In Wales, UK
Llangynidr & Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal Walk, Brecon Beacons Walks In Powys, Walks In Wales, UK
Llangynidr & Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal Walk was about 7.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of canal towpath, steep enclosed rough tracks, other tracks, hillside paths, field paths, quiet country lanes and roads. The walking was mostly easy to moderate on level ground or gentle to moderate undulating ground. However, there was one moderate ascent and descent along enclosed tracks, which were very rough under foot, which made the ascent and descent quite tough. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. There were four stiles to negotiate.

Along the walk you visit: Llangynidr, Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and Pen-y-Bryn; Llwynon Farm, quiet country lanes plus paths and tracks in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons to the south plus the B4560. Scenery includes: Llangynidr village dwellings; Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal scenery with the towpath, narrow boats and bridges; reflections in the canal water, especially the trees and bridges; views from above the River Usk and across a valley; surrounding hills of the Brecon Beacons; fields, farmhouses, stone walls, old enclosed tracks, quiet country lanes and roads; St Cynidr and St Mary Church and graveyard in Llangynidr. You may also encounter sheep and ponies in fields, on the hillside and beside the quiet country lanes.
I did this walk with my wife Anne whilst on a Brecon Beacons National Park walking holiday during April 2019. We drove from our holiday accommodation in Talybont-on-Usk, Powys to the starting location of the Llangynidr, Powys. We parked in the Llangynidr recycling centre car park beside the B4558, at grid reference SO 155 196, which was also the start location of the walk.

The Gap June 2018
If the beauty of the Brecon Beacons National Trust Park draws you near, then take your bike or hire one from Biped Cycles in Brecon or Hikes and Bikes in Talybont. Ducking under the many bridges along the canal and bobbing your way up the Brinore Tramroad is a fantastic way to get up to the spectacular mountains of Fan y Big, Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du.
This route takes the easier option, what is called the Gap, found between Fan y Big and Cribyn, a rocky, Roman-built track that blasts back down to Brecon.
Watch the video and ask any questions you have.

Places to see in ( Brecon - UK )
Places to see in ( Brecon - UK )
Brecon, archaically known as Brecknock, is a market town and community in Powys, Mid Wales. Historically it was the county town of Brecknockshire; although its role as such was eclipsed with the formation of the County of Powys, it remains an important local centre. Brecon is the third-largest town in Powys, after Newtown and Ystradgynlais. It lies north of the Brecon Beacons mountain range, but is just within the Brecon Beacons National Park.
The west end of Brecon has a small industrial area, and recent years have seen the cattle market moved from the centre of the town to this area, with markets held several times a week. Brecon has primary schools, with a secondary school and further education college (Coleg Powys) on the northern edge of the town. The town is home to Christ College, the oldest school in Wales.
Brecon is located near where the east-west A40 (Monmouth-Carmarthen-Fishguard) meets the north-south A470 (Cardiff-Merthyr Tydfil-Llandudno). The nearest airport is Cardiff Airport. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal runs for 35 miles (56 km) between Brecon and Pontnewydd, Cwmbran.
The Usk Bridge in Brecon, Powys, Wales is the town's oldest route over the River Usk. The river was fordable at Brecon and the date of construction of the original bridge here is uncertain. The Hereford, Hay and Brecon Railway was opened gradually from Hereford towards Brecon.
