Walks in Wales: Exploring Monmouth Bridge (Monnow Bridge)
Monnow Bridge in Monmouth, Wales, is the only remaining fortified river bridge in Great Britain with its gate tower standing on the bridge. Such bridge towers were common across Europe from medieval times, but many were destroyed due to urban expansion, diminishing defensive requirements and the increasing demands of traffic and trade. The historical and architectural importance of the bridge and its rarity are reflected in its status as a Scheduled Monument and a Grade I listed building. The bridge crosses the River Monnow (Afon Mynwy) 500 metres (1,600 ft) above its confluence with the River Wye.
Today I am taking a simple exploration over the bridge and getting down to the river to try and get the killer view.

Monmouth, a Medieval Bridge & Planning Our Next Adventure! With Imo and Izzy. ????
It's Saturday and Imo's continuing to recover from the virus and impetigo and starting to feel a lot better. We are beginning to book our next holiday and get very excited about it, too! The destination is going to remain a mystery for the time being, but stick around and you'll eventually find out where we end up!
In the meantime, we head into Monmouth for a stroll and a bite to eat and take a good look at the Monnow bridge, built in 1297 over the River Monnow. It's Britain's only surviving medieval bridge with a fortified gate on its span.
Imo explains what a bund is and shows a fine example.
We take a look around some shops in Monmouth town. Imo points out a couple of home-school resources that she has found useful over the years:
The Horrible Histories, Horrible Geography and Horrible Science books.
Board games by Orchard Toys, especially Pop to the Shops.
Imo makes a faux pas by jamming her bag strap in the catch of the boot which Izzy and the Invisible Boyfriend in the car park.
They go to Lidls and get overly enticed by the middle aisle as usual.
Do they manage to book their next holiday? Watch to find out!! ;¬)
Please don't forget to give the vido a like, if you liked it because it helps the video to be ranked higher in searches etc and really does help the chanel to grow.
Imo xxx

I'm Imo and she's Izzy. We love getting out and about and exploring South Wales and beyond.
We're a home-schooling/home-educating family of two based in the UK dealing with the daily challenges of managing Izzy's severe, chronic eczema and her education. Our resourcefulness is tested on a daily basis but we'd love to share our little triumphs and discoveries with you as we go along.
I will always write closed captions in UK English for my vlogs, not only to make them more accessible in general but also to create a useful resource for advanced learners of the English language who may enjoy regular bursts of pseudo-immersion in English in a narrative context with the additional benefit of corresponding on-screen text.
These videos will not generally feature background music making them extra suitable for people who aren't keen on pop music! x

MONNOW BRIDGE (WELSH: PONT TREFYNWY) IN MONMOUTH, WALES, IS THE ONLY REMAINING FORTIFIED RIVER BRIDGE IN GREAT BRITAIN WITH ITS GATE TOWER STANDING ON THE BRIDGE. IT CROSSES THE RIVER MONNOW 500 METRES (1,600&[#]160;FT) ABOVE ITS CONFLUENCE WITH THE RIVER WYE. ACCORDING TO TRADITION, CONSTRUCTION OF MONNOW BRIDGE BEGAN IN 1272 TO REPLACE A NORMAN TIMBER BRIDGE. THROUGH THE MEDIEVAL ERA, THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR, AND THE CHARTIST UPRISING, THE BRIDGE PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN DEFENDING MONMOUTH. IT ALSO SERVED AS A TOLL GATE, A GAOL, A MUNITIONS STORE, A LODGE, AN ADVERTISING HOARDING, AND A FOCUS FOR CELEBRATIONS. BUILT PREDOMINANTLY OF OLD RED SANDSTONE, THE BRIDGE WAS SIGNIFICANTLY RECONSTRUCTED IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES. IT THEN ALSO BECAME A POPULAR SUBJECT FOR ARTISTS SUCH AS TURNER. IN THE 20TH CENTURY, IT SUFFERED DAMAGE FROM ACCIDENTS AND HEAVY TRAFFIC. AFTER A NEW ROAD BRIDGE WAS BUILT DOWNSTREAM IN 2004, USE OF THE MONNOW BRIDGE WAS RESTRICTED TO PEDESTRIANS. ITS HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE ARE REFLECTED IN ITS STATUS AS A SCHEDULED MONUMENT AND A GRADE I LISTED BUILDING.
