Benin Tourist Attractions Best Places To Visit In Benin Republic
Benin played a key role in the development of the African slave trade and was also the birthplace of the voodoo arts. These two ingredients are just a small part of the recipe that makes the complex and rich history of the African nation.
The nation is relatively small and has only a few large cities but Benin begs to be explores and rewards travellers with museums, wonderful architecture and markets that are truly memorable.
The national beauty of Benin also has a lot to tempt tourists. From the paradise Atlantic beaches fringed with palm trees to the national parks teeming with exotic beasts such as lions, cheetahs and elephants as well as rare bird species.
1 Cotonou
It may not be the true capital city of Benin but Cotonou sure does feel like it. The city is an intense blast of urban energy combined with African charm. If it is your first time in Africa, the city can be a little bit daunting and full on but for those willing to risk the adventure, Cotonou has plenty of rewards These rewards include a number of stunning paradise beaches with golden sand and palm trees. The Pendjari National Park is also a must see in Cotonou and is seen as one of the leading animal reserves in Africa.
2 Ouidah Museum of History
Ouidah is a city that has a mix of influence from the French and the Portuguese due to various events in history. The city is located about 40km away from Cotonou and in contrast is more relaxed. If you are interested in African history (and you should be) then this city should be top of your itinerary. It has fantastic museums exploring slavery and voodoo. If all the history gets too much for you, there are more stunning beaches to laze on in Ouidah too.
3 Abomey
Abomey was the capital of Ancient Dahomey for around 300 years starting in the 17th Century. The main attraction and reason for visiting the city is the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Abomey Royal Palaces. Although the palaces have largely been destroyed and are in a ruinous state, the site still has enormous historical value and the tales of kings that once resided here are fascinating.
4 Porto Novo
Porto Novo is the capital city of Benin and former French capital of Dahomey. If you have visited Cotonou first, you will probably struggle to understand why Porto Novo is the official capital city, the population is only around 250,000 and the pace is much more leisurely than Cotono. The influence of the Portugeuse in this area are still clear to see in the present day. Sights in the city include the Royal Palace and gardens as well as the museum of Porto Novo kings.
5 Grand-Popo
The town of Grand-Popo has an intriguing history mainly due to the important role it played in the slave trade. The town oozes with African charm and the people are friendly. The town is about an hours drive from Cotonou and offers a perfect change of pace from the busy city. There are many backside hotels and resorts in the town and the beaches are a great place to relax and swim. The nearby Mono River is a great place to walk and offers a chance to see mangroves and exotic bird life.
Afi Drill Monkey Sanctuary, Nigeria
Yesterday afternoon I arrived at The Afi Drill Monkey sanctuary in southern Nigeria. Although I had a bit of a chance to explore yesterday, today I really just spent the entire day watching the monkeys at the sanctuary. In total there are only 3,000 drill monkeys left on the planet, and at the moment, Afi Drill Ranch houses over 300 of them; a staggering 10% of the world's population. Much of that population lives in Nigeria, but many also live in neighbouring Cameroon.
The Afi Drill Monkey Sanctuary is run by a company called Pandrillus which does wonderful work with all of the primates in Nigeria. They also look after related issues like deforestation.
In general, my stay at the Afi Drill Monkey Sanctuary was brilliant. Tomorrow I push on into Cameroon.

Video: Nigeria widows get major win in Shell case
*The widows of nine Nigerian activists executed in 1995 got a major boost on Wednesday when a Dutch court ruled that it had jurisdiction to determine whether Royal Dutch Shell was complicit in the Nigerian government’s execution of their husbands.*
The men who came to be known as the Ogoni Nine, were environmental activists who fought against widespread pollution in the Niger Delta.
The four widows accuse Shell of instigating a deadly crackdown by the military government of the time against pe…

On the Road: living and working on the Italian 'road of love'
Hundreds of women operate as sex workers along the Strada Bonifica, the ironically named ‘road of love’ on the Adriatic coast of Italy. There has been a huge increase in the number of Nigerian women working along the 10-mile stretch of road – some of whom have been trafficked into the country and forced into prostitution. The film moves between the women’s stories, the Italians who live and work there and the local NGO attempting to support the women

ZANGBETO are the Guardian of the Nights !
The Pla, an ethnic group of fishermen, live in Gbecon, a small village on the banks of the Mono river in southern Benin. These people are particularly devoted to the worship of Zangbeto, the guardian of the night. ‘Zan’, in fact, means night. The Zangbeto mask is very tall and covered with colored straw. It represents wild non human spirits (the forces of nature and of the night that inhabited the earth before human beings). Zangbeto comes out in the darkness of the night making an eerie humming noise to announce his arrival. He has a deep and guttural voice. He dances by spinning around fast, he jumps high and then crawls like a snake. This performance guarantees protection against thieves and malicious people. He wanders around the streets dispensing justice. The feature of this mask can be explained by its mythical origins. In fact, according to the legend, Zangbeto and his two brothers had been fighting against each other for the throne of their father when, in the night before the final battle, Zangbeto, the youngest, who led a small army and was besieged by the other two brothers, had a vision: a supernatural presence suggested that he and his soldiers cover themselves with straw and run against the enemies pretending to be spirits. The trick worked: his two brothers got scared and ran away. The youngest brother became the new king.

Mermaids Caught On Camera & Spotted In Real Life

Mermaids are mythical creatures that have had a major presence in our society for quite some time. Little girls dream of becoming mermaids. Well, actually, there are adults who dream about becoming mermaids too! From story books to movies, mermaids are half human from the waist up and half-fish from the waist down. Throughout history, there have been sightings of mermaids in personal journals of sailors and voyagers like Christopher Columbus. But today, it is believed that Columbus may have actually been looking at manatees, not mermaids. Either way, it doesn’t diminish the fact that we, as a society, care deeply about mermaids and want them to be real so badly! While we still wait for that first emergence, people have created life-size replicas and even faux documentaries of mermaids that have convinced us that they are real. There are also cases of real people sitting on rocks in mermaid costumes, like the Active Pass mermaid in British Columbia, Victoria, Canada. When enough people are involved in the hoax, almost anything is possible.
In this video, we will introduce to you some stories of mermaids that have been caught on camera and spotted in real life. Thanks to Animal Planet’s Mermaids: The Body Found, people thought mermaids actually existed. But in reality, the network used creative CGI and amazing special effects to make it look all the more convincing. There are more hoaxes where that came from, so get ready! If anything, these stories prove just how gullible we still are as a society.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
