Monolithic Bull
Locally known as Yeduru Basavanna or Nandi, this monolithic bull marks the east end of the Virupaksha Bazaar. The statue is housed in a twin storied pavilion built on an elevated platform. A heap of gigantic boulders behind the pavilion offers an interesting backdrop. Though partially mutilated and carved in a coarse style, this Nandi attracts visitor owing to its giant size.
Monolithic Bull pavilion Nandi is the mount of lord Shiva and it's symbolic that this one faces the Shiva shrine (Virupaksha Temple) located at the opposite end of the street, about a kilometer from it. At a little distance in front of the Nandi you can also spot a tall stone lamp post with metal spikes over it.
A flight of steps along the left side of the Nandi pavilion leads you to the Achyuta Raya's Temple located across the hill.

Hampi Utsav 2020 | Achyutaraya temple, Matanga Hill and Hampi bazar
In this 8th episode, we explore popular places to visit in Hampi, Achyutaraya Temple, Underground Shiva temple, Monolithic Bull and also foothills of Matanga Hill.
Achyutaraya Temple:
Achyutaraya Temple is one of the important places to visit in Hampi and is a major attraction in Hampi tourism.
Built during 1534 AD by Achyuta Deva Raya (Younger brother of Krishna Deva Raya) devoted to Tiruvengalanatha, a form of Vishnu.
Achyutaraya Temple is an example of Vijayanagara style temple architecture in its most advanced form than any other temples in Hampi. This was one of the last grand temple projects executed in the capital, before the fall of the empire.
Achyutaraya Temple is in ruins as a consequence of the attacks by the monarchs of the Bahamani kingdom and by the forces of nature over several centuries.
At the northwest corner of the outer compound, Kalyana Mandapa (marriage hall for the annual wedding ceremony of the God and the Goddess)
Underground Shiva Temple:
Also known as the Prasanna Virupaksha temple, this structure dates back to the 14th century AD.
This temple dedicated to Lord Siva was built many meters below the ground level.
The roof of the temple is at par with the present ground level while the main structure of the temple stands on a low lying area.
Almost all the time the inner sanctum and the core parts of the temple are under water, restricting entry to the inner areas.
The temple has remained buried for over four hundred years before it was discovered in the 1980’s decade. It is believed that this is one of the oldest temples in Hampi.
Monolithic Bull:
Carved out of a single gigantic boulder, it is also known locally as Yeduru Basavanna. Located at the east end of the Virupaksha Bazaar or Hampi Bazar

A quick tour of Hampi | Must visit place in Karnataka | Tata Nexon roadtrip
All about must visit places around Hampi in just 5 minutes.
Steps Together present the trailer of the new vlog series, Hampi - A Time travel.
Hampi is one of the most popular destinations in India. Situated on the banks of Tungabhadra river in Ballari district of northern Karnataka, the place attracts a huge crowd from all over the world. Hampi was the glorious capital of mighty Vijayanagara empire in the 13-14th century. Historical stories state that Hampi was a very prosperous and wealthy town filled with extraordinary temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world’s second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India’s richest at that time.
The Vijayanagara empire was defeated by the Muslim Sultanates in the 15th century. The precious monuments and temples were destructed very badly during the fall of the Vijayanagara empire. The Archaeological Survey of India conducted excavation in the area and the results can now be seen in the form of ruins of this great empire. The group of monuments of Hampi is declared as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986 and the monuments are well preserved.
Surrounded by hills filled with huge boulders, lush green agricultural lands, ancient priceless monuments at each and every corner of the town, Hampi is a must visit place in India. The rich temples are scattered all around the town and need proper planning to avoid missing any of the attractions.
The Tungabhadra river broadly classifies Hampi into two parts – 1) Hampi center side (Kamalapura side) and 2) Anegundi side. Hampi center side contains almost all the tourist destinations and is usually filled with tourists. Anegundi side is on the other side of Thungabhadra river and is usually less crowded. It is often called the hippie island.
The major Hampi center attractions (the one on the Kamalapura side) can be grouped as follows. The places within each group can be covered by walk:
Group 1 – Hampi Bazar, Virupaksha temple, Hemakuta Hill temples, Sasivekalu Ganesha, Kadlekalu Ganesha, Monolithic bull, and Krishna temple.
Group 2 – Ugra Narasimha and Badavi Linga (these are on the way from Royal enclosure to Virupaksha temple)
Group 3 – Royal Enclosure (Queen’s bath, Mahanavami Dibba, King’s Audience Hall, Stepped Tank, and Public tank), Hazara Rama Temple, and Zenana Enclosure (Basement of queen’s palace, Lotus Mahal, Elephant’s stables, and watchtowers)
Group 4 – Monolithic Bull, Mathanga Hill, and Achyutaraya temple
Group 5 – Vittala Temple complex
On the Anegundi side, the main attractions are Anjanadri Hill, Gagan Mahal, and Sanapura Lake.

Hampi - Achutraya Temple
Towards the east, the temple complex of Acthuraya has its unique presence in the Hampi group of temples. You can reach this temple from across the hill facing Virupaksha bazzar. A flight of stairs start at the Monolith Bull (Nandi) to take you over to the west side of the temple complex. The north entrance opens to a very wide and extensive bazaar known as Courtesan street taking you towards the Vitthal Complex to the east and the river to the west. There is a step well (Pushkarni) at the end of this bazaar and few other temples. This is one of the less crowded spots as it is far from the road, yet worth a visit.
Virupaksha Temple at Hampi
This temple is located on the south bank of the river Tungabadra, just next to where the local bus drops you. This area in general has been an important pilgrimage centre for the worshipers of lord Shiva. Virupaksha temple is equally sort after by the tourists and pilgrims. The annual festivals attract huge crowds of both the types.
The very origin of Hampis history as a sacred place revolves around the myths associated with this temple. It believed that this temple has been functioning uninterruptedly ever since its inception in the 7th century AD.That makes this one of the oldest functioning temples in India.
The original worship place was only a few separate humble shrines (believed to be as old as 7th century) housing the image of the god and the goddesses. Over the centuries the temple gradually expanded into a sprawling complex with many sub shrines, pillared halls, flag posts, lamp posts, towered gateways and even a large temple kitchen. You access the temples main entrance tower through the chariot street in front now popularly called the Hampi Bazaar.
This east facing giant tower (Gopura) leads you the first courtyard of the temple complex. This pastel painted 9 storied tower with a pair of cow horn like projections on top is the most prominent landmark in Hampi. The lower two tiers of the tower is made of decorated stone work.

To know more about Hampi:
Achyutaraya Temple - Hampi.
Believed to have been built during King Achyuta Deva Raya (1530-1542) by an officer Salakaraju Tirumaladeva, this temple, though not as large or beautiful as Vitthala Temple, is still a beautiful and sizeable monument. Though dedicated to Thiruvengalanatha or Lord Venkateshwara, the temple is known by the King under whose reign it was built.
Unlike the other temple complexes, this temple complex has two enclosures, each marked by an entrance Gopura. The main temple is situated within the second enclosure. Opposite to the temple is the shrine for Garuda, the celestial bird and the vehicle of Vishnu. To the south west of the temple is a shrine for Devi. Running around the inner courtyard is the pillared cloister. The Kalyana Mantapa is located in the northwestern corner of the outer enclosure. Like all major temple complexes, this temple complex was also provided with a Kalyana Mantapa where the annual marriage ceremony of the deity was conducted. The slender pillars of this Mantapa bear dexterously carved bas relief. The basement of the Kalyana Mantapa is richly decorated with the relief of elephants.
The main deity in the temple is missing and the Garbha Griha (sanctum) of the temple is standing on pillars put in place in the recent past by Archaeology Department to support the dilapidated structure from further deterioration. Very typical of the Vijayanagara Architecture, the temple and the Kalyana Mantapa pillars pose as if being supported by mythical Yalis. The temple pillars also have carvings of tales and episodes from Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Like Virupaksha Temple and Vitthala Temple, Achyuta Raya Temple also has a bazaar starting right at the doorstep of the temple all the way to the Varaha Temple on the northern end. This street is known as Courtesan Street and it is believed that this street was once a very flourishing centre of trade.
How to reach there: Achyuta Raya Temple can be reached either from Kodanda Rama Temple through the Courtesan Street or by crossing the Matanga Hill using the steps beside the Monolithic Nandi (Bull) statue at the opposite end of the Virupaksha Bazaar.
