Carmel, Indiana
Located directly North of Indianapolis is CNN Money Magazine’s 2012 Best Places to Live in the United States; Carmel, Indiana. This once sleepy town has been revitalized in the past 20 years. Originally founded by Quakers in 1837, Carmel exudes charm. Neighborhoods boast an eclectic range of architecture. Its residents include noteworthy sports team owners, CEO’s, and, at one point, the Vice President of the United States. With one of the highest per-capita incomes in the country, residents are also attracted to Carmel’s school systems, ranked one of the best in the state. It has excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, low taxes and easy commutes. With over 80 roundabouts, the most in any American city, commutes are quick and efficient. The Arts and Design District within Carmel is the Midwest’s premier arts and design destination and a host to interior designers, art galleries, antique stores, restaurants, and unique retail shops. The District presents a multitude of family friendly events throughout the year, making it a great place to play and work. Upscale retailers and restaurants are found throughout the city in addition to attractions such as The Carmel Civic Square, The Carmel Symphony Orchestra, The Palladium, and Clay Terrace Outdoor Mall. Carmel is also a stop on the Monon Trail. What used to be railroad tracks is now a bike trail that is over 15 miles long and runs through downtown Indianapolis.

Monon Rail Trail - Indianapolis, IN
The Monon Rail Trail stretches from the town of Sheridan in the north, extends south through Westfield, Carmel, Broad Ripple, and passes by the Indiana State Fairgrounds before intersecting with the Indianapolis Cultural Trail at Massachusetts Ave.
On our trip we turned around at the fairgrounds and repeated the ride back up to Carmel for lunch and then down once again to the 96th street trailhead before heading home. The Carmel - Westfield area is exceptionally maintained. Its all fairly nice, but the northern end is nicer and drivers there respect riders at road crossings more.
I was so impressed with this area that I almost want to pack up and move there.
