Horseshoe Campground Monongahela National Forest WV
Camping in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. Campsites 1 - 12 electric with paved pads and flat sites. Sits back just a little from the stream but not a far walk. A few trees here and there and more open space; Campsites 13 - 18 no electric and some paved pad and flat sites. A few of theses sites are close to the waters edge. These sites are under more trees and shaded. Campsites 19, 20 and 21 are the only three walk up primitive sites. These three sites site right next to the waters edge. A short paved walking path to these three sites. Bathrooms are fairly close to both camping areas. Water is available from water faucets situated through out the camping areas. Campground hosts are on the premises. There is a large field in the middle by the pavilion where kids can run and play. You can fish in the stream and also wade and swim. Pavilion is also available for renting for special occasions. There is a very small camp store (building) on the campgrounds.
~ We noted a couple handicap designated campsites.
~ Level ground and paved road and pads at the sites.
~ I counted 4 designated handicap parking spots.
~ To get to the water there is a small gradual slope but wouldn't be
to hard to get to with some assistance if needed help with
walking.
~ We didn't have cell phone service there but there is a pay phone
by the small camp store.

Monongahela National Forest: Birthplace of Rivers | Pew & This American Land
Get to know West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest in this preview of an upcoming episode of This American Land, produced in collaboration with The Pew Charitable Trusts.
Working to preserve a rare and iconic part of West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest, citizens are hopeful that the area will be protected as the state's first national monument.
Some of West Virginia's most recognizable and dramatic landscapes, from the thundering falls of Hills Creek to the limitless vistas of the Yew Mountains, could be protected with such designation. In addition, the monument would also include the Cranberry Wilderness Area -- roughly 75,000 acres of wild terrain and some of the best hunting and trout fishing in Appalachia. Famed local author G.D. McNeill called this region of West Virginia the Last Forest and it's easy to see why. The remote, rugged terrain is a haven for rare species and serves as the headwaters for six regional waterways.

FR 18 Douglas to US 219
FR 18 Canyon Rim Road is a forest Road in the Monongahela National Forest that runs from Douglas WV just outside of Thomas to FR 717 near US 219 and the Olson Observation Tower. This video shows the route of FR 18 and the forest roads that intersect with it. FR 18 has a number of scenic views to the Blackwater Canyon including views of Lindy Point and access to the Big Run Overlook. FR 18 is also a trailhead for Canyon Rim Trail and the Limerock Trail, which leads into the canyon towards Hendricks and intersects with the Blackwater Canyon Trail. The road is very rocky with mud obstacles that can be very challenging in wetter conditions. There are also two stream fords that can become difficult under heavy rain. Because of these conditions 4WD is highly recommended. Once the road nears the intersection with FR 717 the road conditions improve dramatically, with the road being well graveled. This video also shows FR 717 to the Olson Tower and back to US 219. FR 717 is much better maintained and suitable for most passenger vehicles. Both roads have a number of roadside sites where camping is possible.

60 seconds of Osceola, West Virginia
Osceola was a remote logging community in the early 1900's located in Randolph County, West Virginia between Spruce Knob and the Laurel Fork Campground in the Monongahela National Forest. Today it is a sparse collection of farm land with primitive hunting shacks and farm houses.
