Peterhof Palace
The Peterhof Palace is a series of palaces and gardens located in Peterhof, 35 km from Saint Petersburg, laid out on the orders of Peter the Great. These palaces and gardens are sometimes referred as the Russian Versailles. The palace-ensemble along with the city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The largest of Peterhof's palaces looks truly imposing when seen from the Lower or Upper Gardens, but in fact it is quite narrow and not overly large. Of its approximately thirty rooms, several deserve mention.
The Grand Palace is not the only historic royal building in Peterhof. The palaces of Monplaisir and Marly, as well as the pavilion known as the 'Hermitage', were all raised during the initial construction of Peterhof during the reign of Peter the Great. The Lower Gardens also contain a large greenhouse, and in the Alexandrine Park stands the palace of Nicholas I.
Like the Lower Gardens, the Upper Gardens contain many fountains, distributed among seven broad pools. The landscaping, though, is entirely different; unlike the Lower Gardens (which are strictly geometric), the Upper Gardens are not. A few of the fountains have curious sculptures.
The Ceremonial Rooms of the Main Favorite of Peter III Opened in Peterhof

The famous Vorontsova's rooms were grandly re-opened after restoration in Peterhof. This is a complex of ground-floor premises in the Great Menshikov Palace of Oranienbaum. In late 18th century, it was residence to an official favorite of the Grand Duke Pyotr III Fyodorovich, a maid of honor Elizaveta Vorontsova. After almost three centuries, the ceremonial rooms regained their former decor and furnishings. Ekaterina Fisenko will show the restored palace.
Peterhof Palace
The Peterhof Palace (Russian: Петерго́ф; IPA: Dutch for Peter's Court) is a series of palaces and gardens located in Saint Petersburg, Russia, laid out on the orders of Peter the Great. These Palaces and gardens are sometimes referred as the Russian Versailles. The palace-ensemble along with the city centre is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Grand Cascade and Samson Fountain
.
The Grand Cascade is modelled on one constructed for Louis XIV at his Château de Marly, which is likewise memorialised in one of the park's outbuildings.
At the centre of the cascade is an artificial grotto with two stories, faced inside and out with hewn brown stone. It currently contains a modest museum of the fountains' history. One of the exhibits is a table carrying a bowl of (artificial) fruit, a replica of a similar table built under Peter's direction. The table is rigged with jets of water that soak visitors when they reach for the fruit, a feature from Mannerist gardens that remained popular in Germany. The grotto is connected to the palace above and behind by a hidden corridor.
The fountains of the Grand Cascade are located below the grotto and on either side of it. Their waters flow into a semicircular pool, the terminus of the fountain-lined Sea Channel. In the 1730s, the large Samson Fountain was placed in this pool. It depicts the moment when Samson tears open the jaws of a lion, representing Russia's victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War, and is doubly symbolic. The lion is an element of the Swedish coat of arms, and one of the great victories of the war was won on St Samson's Day. From the lion's mouth shoots a 20-metre-high vertical jet of water, the highest in all of Peterhof. This masterpiece by Mikhail Kozlovsky was looted by the invading Germans during the Second World War; see History below. A replica of the statue was installed in 1947.
Perhaps the greatest technological achievement of Peterhof is that all of the fountains operate without the use of pumps. Water is supplied from natural springs and collects in reservoirs in the Upper Gardens. The elevation difference creates the pressure that drives most of the fountains of the Lower Gardens, including the Grand Cascade. The Samson Fountain is supplied by a special aqueduct, over four km in length, drawing water and pressure from a high-elevation source.
The first residential building in St. Petersburg: Cabin of Peter the Great
The cabin of Peter the Great (is a small wooden house which was the first St Petersburg palace of Tsar Peter I.
The log cabin was constructed in three days in May 1703, by soldiers of the Semyonovskiy Regiment. At that time, the new St Petersburg was described as a heap of villages linked together, like some plantation in the West Indies. The date of its construction is now considered to mark the foundation of the city.
The design is a combination of an izba, a traditional Russian countryside house typical of the 17th century, and the Tsar's beloved Dutch Baroque, later to evolve into the Petrine Baroque. Peter built similar domiki elsewhere in Russia - for example, in Voronezh, and Vologda. The wooden cabin in St Petersburg covers only 60 square meters (650 sq ft) and contains three rooms - living room, bedroom, and study. It has large ornate windows and a high hipped roof of wooden tiles. Inside, the wooden walls were painted with red oil to resemble brick, and the rooms came to be known as the red chambers. There are no fires or chimneys, as it was intended to be used only in the warmer summer months. It was occupied by the Tsar between 1703 and 1708, while Peter supervised the construction of the new imperial city and the Peter and Paul Fortress.
The cabin was moved to its present location, 6 Petrovskaia Naberezhnaia, in 1711 from its original site on the north bank of the River Neva close to the present Winter Palace. Peter had it encased for its protection within a red brick pavilion in 1723 and ordered that it be preserved for posterity as a memorial to his modesty, and the creation of St Petersburg ex nihilo. Catherine the Great ordered the shelter for the cabin to be renovated in 1784, and the protective brick pavilion was reconstructed by Nicholas I in the 1840s. Nicholas I also had the bedroom converted into a chapel dedicated to Christ the Redeemer, and iron railings were added in 1874.
Peter's domiki were used to mark significant dates, such as the bicentenary of Peter's birth in 1672. They became a center of devotion to the tsar, the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Russian motherland. An image of the log cabin was included on the Peter the Great Fabergé egg, created in 1903 to celebrate the bicentenary of the founding of St Petersburg. After the Russian Revolution, they became symbols of Russian heroic labor.
A prized national monument, the contents were removed, and the Cabin was boarded up and camouflaged during the Second World War. It was the first St Petersburg museum to reopen in September 1944, after the end of the Siege of Leningrad. Personal and domestic objects owned and used by Peter are still displayed within, and a bust of Peter by Parmen Zabello stands outside. The cabin is open to the public as a branch of the Russian Museum.

St. Petersburg, the Kunstkamera, La Specola and the Monsters of Ulisse Aldrovandi
Please join us for a slide lecture with Stacy Hopkins and David Fairbanks Ford. Our lecture, with photographs of St. Petersburg, the Kunstkamera, La Specola and the Monsters of Ulisse Aldrovandi will commence at 8 p.m. The earliest cabinets of wonder in Europe from the 1600s will be discussed. The Hapsburg empire amassed priceless collections. The Medicis were compulsive. Italian collections migrated to the Netherlands. Some of these were purchased by Peter the Great. This is the celebration of the 300th birthday of the Kunstkamera. At some point in the evening we will all sing the Russian Imperial Hymn. A slide lecture delivered in a stream of consciousness vernacular! Its all not to be missed!
The latest exhibition at the Main Street Museum will retrieve your forgotten sense of Wonder! Here you will see a stick from site of the first rude cabin—constructed by Peter the 1st, impersonating a Dutch Fisherman—a pine branch replicating the pine that grew on the site of the great Kunstkamera. Here you will see photos of owls and mushrooms sculpted in wax. As well as shells from the Tropical Seas! Water from St. Petersburg—the Fontanka, from the Neva, from the Moika, from the Gulf of Finland and of course from the Kanal Griboyedova. We have a rock from the foundation of the earliest house of Peter the Great at Petrodvorets, Mon Plaisir—on the shores of the Baltic—as well as a sample of water from the Bay of Finland itself! Bones from Ancient Monasteries, Four Horned Goat Skulls, Mummified Goat Skulls (containing the last dream of the goat) and My Pretty Ponies will enchant you. The Museum has never looked better, and our deck has been decorated with summer vegetation, not native to Vermont, and with a new mosaic tile countertop.
You won't believe your eyes!
