Monsal Trail - DerbyShire UK
The Monsal Trail is a cycling, horse riding and walking trail in the Derbyshire Peak District. It was constructed from a section of the former Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway, built by the Midland Railway in 1863 to link Manchester with London, which closed in 1968. The Monsal Trail is about 8.5 miles in length and opened in 1981. It starts at the Topley Pike junction in Wye Dale, three miles East of Buxton, and runs to Coombs Viaduct, one mile South-East of Bakewell. It follows the valley of the River Wye. The trail passes through Blackwell Mill, Millers Dale, Cressbrook, Monsal Dale, Great Longstone, Hassop and Bakewell. The trail has numerous landmarks including Headstone Viaduct, Cressbrook Mill, Litton Mill, Hassop railway station and passes through six tunnels.

Bakewell Walks was about 9.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of a long stretch on the flat trackbed of the Monsal Trail; field, hill, woodland and riverside paths and tracks; plus road and pavement sections. The walking was generally on level ground or gradually undulating with a couple of steep gradients. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. Some paths can be very wet and muddy on the return section of the walk. There were about 11 stiles to negotiate.

Beautiful Monsal Trail Bike Ride Derbyshire UK 2019
Wonderful Bike ride from Blackwell to Bakewell in Derbyshire England in August 2019. The Monsal trail was originally a railway line in the Midlands of England that ran through the Peak District. After the rail line was close, it was reopened as a bike and walking path. The trail goes through six of the old tunnels which cut through the hills, and has beautiful overlooks. It is a lot of fun. The Monsal passes through Blackwell Mill, Millers Dale, Cressbrook, Monsal Dale, Great Longstone, Hassop and Bakewell.

Monsal Trail 15-09-16 Full Trail Video.
As the title suggests, this is the trail in full - all 9.5 miles (via unicycle) - and while it might not be for everyone it was a video I wanted to make.
I've not cut anything out, but I had sped the majority of the footage up, cutting an hour and a half's ride down to 30 minutes.

Monsal Trail: Railway Walk: Bakewell to Buxton Derbyshire: Nigel Harper Photography
A fusion of Video and Stills! Walking the Monsal Trail (A disused Midland Railway line) is something we'd planned to do for ages. Work and poor weather delayed the trip until a brief respite in the weather allowed a 2 day trip to Derbyshire in early September 2012. Starting from Bakewell, we traversed numerous bridges, (over/under) through tunnels (6) with fantastic scenery, (Monsal Head) and followed the River Wye for a couple of miles (spectacular) not to be missed. From Wyedale we headed towards the A6 and took a bus to Buxton. Later bussing back to Bakewell to collect our car. Fantastic day out, Fab scenery, Fab weather (we were lucky) We'll be back next Spring and maybe do it on our Tandem! A couple of tips - Take refreshments with you and check bus times to and from Buxton. Avoid weekends maybe!

You can walk or cycle The Monsal Trail. It's about 12km long and you can also hire cycles that you can use on the trail. The last train ran in 1968 and the disused railway line has now been turned into a tourist trail where you can walk through renovated rail tunnels and over viaducts whilst marveling at the amazing rock formations that are over 3.5 million years old.
