Oscar Romero, The Church And El Salvador's Civil War (1983)
Crucified Church: Archbishop Óscar Romero’s assassination in 1980 precipitated El Salvador’s long and bloody civil war. The Catholic Church was left torn between the ruling right and the rebelling left.
Subscribe to Journeyman here:
Romero condemned the conflict, urging the US to suspend military aid and calling upon Salvadoran soldiers to defy orders to kill civilians. This outspoken entreaty led to his murder. This 1983 report gives a powerful insight into the first years of the war, from the guerrilla camps in the jungles to acts of violent dissent on the streets.

El Salvador: Thousands celebrate canonisation of Archbishop Oscar Romero
Thousands of people marched in San Salvador on Saturday to celebrate the canonisation of fourth Archbishop of San Salvador Oscar Romero, who spoke out against social injustice, torture and poverty and was shot dead during mass on March 24, 1980.
Romero supporters marched carrying banners and portraits remembering the assassinated Archbishop.
It is an unprecedented happening, the first saint in El Salvador, and for him to be a defender of the poor, it is a big joy for everyone, parishioner Mauricio Maravilla said.
To this day, no one has ever confessed to Romero's assassination, or been prosecuted for it.

SOT, Mauricio Maravilla, Parishioner (Spanish): That the Vatican recognizes it in an official way is important, of course, because it means putting it in the altars for all Catholics. It is an unprecedented happening, the first saint in El Salvador, and for him to be a defender of the poor, it is a big joy for everyone.
SOT, Jorge Rivas, Parishioner (Spanish): And hopefully for the Salvadoran people, for Central America, for the world to declare Monsignor Romero is an injection of hope, of eagerness to continue fighting. For if Monsignor Romero gave his life he did not give it in vain.

The Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador
Fr. José María Tojeira, SJ remembers the martyrdom of six Jesuits at the University of Central America in El Salvador.
THEY SAVED LIVES IN LIFE, AND SAVED MORE LIVES IN DEATH.
On November 16, 1989 at three in the morning, government soldiers stormed the Jesuit residence at the University of Central America (UCA) in San Salvador, El Salvador. They brutally murdered the president of the university, Ignacio Ellacuría, SJ and five of his brother Jesuits, along with their housekeeper Elba Ramos and her daughter Celina. The Jesuits had been strong critics of the civil war ravaging El Salvador in which more than 70,000 civilians were killed between 1979 and 1992.
Fr. José María Tojeira, SJ was the Jesuit Provincial for Central America from 1988-1995 and was on the campus grounds when his brothers were dragged from their beds and shot in the garden behind the residence. He recounts the night of the attack and the immediate aftermath when his own life was in jeopardy. Despite the danger, the Jesuits continued to speak truth to power, standing in solidarity with the poor of El Salvador.
The Jesuit Martyrs are remembered and celebrated by the church on November 16th each year.
Footage shows the tombs of the six Jesuit martyrs in the university chapel, the garden where they were shot (now a rose garden), and the memorial museum on campus.

EL SALVADOR: ANNIVERSARY OF ROMERO ASSASSINATION
Spanish/Nat
The people of El Salvador gathered in their thousands on Friday to observe the twentieth anniversary of the assassination of Monsignor Oscar Romero.
Every year, Salvadoreans gather in the streets and in church to celebrate the life of the outspoken, sometimes controversial archbishop.
The twentieth anniversary was commemorated with marches, rallies and church services, attended by religious leaders from several other countries.
It was one of the most influential and scarring events in El Salvador's recent history.
Twenty years ago, Monsignor Oscar Romero was assassinated by a death squad as he celebrated mass in a hospital chapel in San Salvador.
The archbishop's death shocked the world and is regarded as the catalyst which helped end the country's bloody 12 year civil war.
Every year Salvadoreans commemorate the anniversary of his murder with demonstrations and religious services.
The activities dedicated to the memory of Romero began last Friday and continued throughout the week with a series of photographic exhibitions and masses in the main churches of El Salvador.
This year, activities began with a congregation at the site of the Archbishop's murder and a pilgrimage to Metropolitan Cathedral, where he is buried.
A mass was then celebrated by Monsignor Fernando Saénz, which was attended by over 200 religious figures from across Latin America and Europe.
Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of the Los Angeles diocese, celebrated an official mass Friday night in the El Salvador del Mundo Plaza, followed by a pilgrimage back to the cathedral and a candlelight vigil.
Archbishop Oscar Romero was a controversial figure.
His outspoken manner made him many enemies among the political right wing, who considered him an agitator and accused him of encouraging subversion.
He was a very popular man - a champion of the poor who spoke openly about the rights of the poor and the repression of his fellow men.
The killing of Archbishop took place the day after he made a sermon criticising the military and demanding an end to the violence.
He was shot in the heart as he raised the chalice at a mass for cancer patients.
The Vatican is currently considering a sainthood for Archbishop Romero.
