Monaco landscape, Monaco harbor, Port Hercules, Monte Carlo, Monaco, Europe
Monte Carlo officially refers to an administrative area of the Principality of Monaco, specifically the ward of Monte Carlo/Spélagues, where the Monte Carlo Casino is located. Informally the name also refers to a larger district, the Monte Carlo Quarter, which besides Monte Carlo/Spélagues also includes the wards of La Rousse/Saint Roman, Larvotto/Bas Moulins, and Saint Michel. The permanent population of the ward of Monte Carlo is about 3,500, while that of the quarter is about 15,000. Monaco has four traditional quarters. From west to east they are: Fontvieille (the newest), Monaco-Ville (the oldest), La Condamine, and Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo is situated on a prominent escarpment at the base of the Maritime Alps along the French Riviera. Near the western end of the quarter is the world-famous Place du Casino, the gambling center which has made Monte Carlo an international byword for the extravagant display and reckless dispersal of wealth. It is also the location of the Hôtel de Paris, the Café de Paris, and the Salle Garnier. The eastern part of the quarter includes the community of Larvotto with Monaco's only public beach, as well as its new convention center, and the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort. At its eastern border one crosses into the French town of Beausoleil , and just 5 miles further east is the western border of Italy.

Monte Carlo
Recorded August 22, 2008.
Monte Carlo is one of Monaco's administrative areas, sometimes erroneously believed to be a town or the country's capital. The official capital is Monaco-Ville and covers all quarters of the territory. The old town of Monaco-Ville surrounds the palace on the southwest side of the Monaco harbor. To the west is the new suburb, harbor, and marina of Fontvieille. On the other side of the rock and around the harbor is La Condamine and resort of Larvotto. Monte Carlo, which lies in the French Riviera on the Mediterranean Sea in Monaco in the corner of France and Italy is known internationally as a playground for the rich and famous. It is widely known for its casinos, gambling, glamour, luxurious yachts and for sightings of wealthy businessmen and famous people. The permanent population is about 3,000. Monte Carlo quarter includes not only Monte Carlo proper where the famous Le Grand Casino is located. It also includes the neighborhoods of Saint-Michel, Saint-Roman/Tenao, and the beach community of Larvotto. It borders the French town of Beausoleil.
The video begins as we drop anchor in Monte Carlo's harbor at sunrise. My first stop in Monte Carlo was at Saint Nicholas Cathedral, known also as Monaco Cathedral, it is the cathedral where many of the Grimaldis were buried, including Grace Kelly and more recently, Rainier III. Next it was over to Prince's Palace of Monaco. From here there were sweeping views of the principality. My walk continued over to the Grand Casino. The video concludes on board the Sea Princess where we wait in the picturesque harbor for night to fall so we can watch a fireworks display before sailing away.

Touring Monaco and Monte Carlo can involve a considerable amount of walking but you'll drive directly up to the district of Monte Carlo, where you'll find the Place du Casino, the Hotel de Paris, Cafe de Paris and the legendary Monte Carlo Casino. View the exterior of the magnificent casino and take some time to stroll along the luxury boutiques and cafes. Head up to Monaco Rock, where you'll walk the narrow streets of Old Monaco. Here you'll see the cathedral where Prince Rainier married Grace Kelly and where they are both now laid to rest. Your walking tour will bring you further to the Prince's Palace Square where you'll have free time to admire the exterior of the Grimaldi Palace and do some shopping.
Note: During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses and bring bottled water. Guests must be able to walk approximately 1 1/2 miles over various surfaces. Tour order may vary. The Monaco city buses used are exclusively reserved for Norwegian Cruise Line guests. These local buses are designed for standing and seated occupancy, so some guests will stand during the short transfers. Salles Publiques (entrance fee of 10 Euros in cash) is open at 2:00pm for Roulette and slot machines. Visitors must be at least 18 years of age and show passport or ID Card.
