Speed Painting - Masp Museum
The São Paulo Museum of Art is an art museum located on Paulista Avenue in the city of São Paulo, Brazil.
It is well known for its headquarters, a 1968 concrete and glass structure designed by Lina Bo Bardi, whose main body is supported by two lateral beams over a 74 metres (243 ft) freestanding space, considered a landmark of the city and a main symbol of modern Brazilian architecture.
The museum is a private non-profit institution founded in 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand and Pietro Maria Bardi. MASP distinguished itself for many important initiatives concerning museology and art education in Brazil, as well as for its pioneering role as a cultural center. It was also the first Brazilian museum interested in Post-World War II art.
The museum is internationally recognized for its collection of European art, considered the finest in Latin America and all Southern Hemisphere.
It also houses an emphatic assemblage of Brazilian art, prints and drawings, as well as smaller collections of African and Asian art, antiquities, decorative arts, and others, amounting to more than 8,000 pieces. MASP has one of the largest art libraries in the country. The entire collection has been named by Brazil's Institute of History and Art to the Brazilian National Heritage list.

Fight for the Amazon: Brazil's Media in the Age of Bolsonaro | Whose Truth Is It Anyway?
Deep in Brazil's Amazon rainforest is the Sao Domingos rubber plantation, the site of continuing land disputes and a recent rash of killings.
The land has long been fought over by small farmers, loggers and powerful agribusiness companies.
Mauricio Monteiro, an investigative reporter and cofounder of Reporter Brasil, a publication that focuses on slavery and rural issues, is looking into reported deaths in the area.
He discovers that dubious land claims and plot sales have led to violent disputes amongst a large cast of shady characters, from supposed landowners to poor rural migrants who have come with the hopes of owning a plot of land.
But the more he investigates, the murkier the story becomes.
I suspect all of the people I've spoken to lie to my face, he says. None of them was like a plain villain or a plain victim. So this is a conflict, not only a land conflict but a conflict of narrative.
Monteiro maintains that the murders are a result of policies implemented by Brazil's newly-elected government, which he claims has encouraged the plundering of the Amazon to advance a pro-agricultural business agenda.
He says President Jair Bolsonaro's budget cuts to government institutions such as INCRA, the national agency in charge of the allocation of land, has caused many disputes regarding land ownerships, leading to violence and the illegal logging of the rainforest.
INCRA's budget was cut from $1bn to just $29m, according to a representative.
INCRA is one of the state bodies that had been surgically crippled by Mr Jair Bolsonaro's actions so it's almost unfair to expect that an institution that's working on such a low budget could intervene in a historical conflict as this of rubber plantations in Sao Domingos, Monteiro says.
Brazil: The Age of Bolsonaro follows Monteiro as he navigates a murky media landscape, risking his safety to report on the Amazon and uncover the truth.

Museum of Tomorrow | Rio de Janeiro 360º | Visit Brasil
Inaugurated at the end of 2015, the Museum of Tomorrow is part of a plan to revitalize the center and harbour area of Rio de Janeiro.
What strikes visitors is the architecture of the Museum. Designed by the Spanish Santiago Calatrava, the architecture is inspired by the bromeliads from the Botanical Garden and its harmonious shapes mingles with the landscape around.
Its collection is dedicated to science and to explore the possibilities of creation for the future. The concept that guides the tour in the museum is: tomorrow is a construction which starts today.

Orisha book review: ORISHA by Pierre Fatumbi Verger
Pierre Edouard Leopold Verger, alias Fatumbi or Fátúmbí (4 November 1902, in Paris – 11 February 1996, in Salvador, Brazil) was a photographer, self-taught ethnographer, and babalawo (Yoruba priest of Ifa) who devoted most of his life to the study of the African diaspora — the slave trade, the African-based religions of the new world, and the resulting cultural and economical flows from and to Africa.
Life
At the age of 30, after losing his family, Pierre Verger took up the career of journalistic photographer. Over the next 15 years, he traveled the four continents, documenting many civilizations that would soon be effaced by progress. His destinations included Tahiti (1933); United States, Japan, and China (1934 and 1937); Italy, Spain, Sudan (now Mali), Niger, Upper Volta, Togo and Dahomey (now Benin, 1935); the West Indies (1936); Mexico (1937, 1939, and 1957); the Philippines and Indochina (now Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, 1938); Guatemala and Ecuador (1939); Senegal (as a conscript, 1940); Argentina (1941), Peru and Bolivia (1942 and 1946); and finally Brazil (1946). His photographs were featured in magazines such as Paris-Soir, Daily Mirror (under the pseudonym of Mr. Lensman), Life, and Paris Match.
In the city of Salvador, Brazil he fell in love with the place and people, and decided to stay for good. Having become interested in the local history and culture, he turned from errant photographer to a researcher of the African diaspora in the Americas. His subsequent voyages are focused on that goal: the west coast of Africa and Paramaribo (1948), Haiti (1949), and Cuba (1957). After studying the Yoruba culture and its influences in Brazil, Verger became an initiated of the Candomblé religion, and officiated at its rituals. During a visit to Benin, he was initiated into Ifá (cowrie-shell divination), became a babalawo (priest) of Orunmila, and was renamed Fátúmbí (he who is reborn through the Ifá).
Veger's contributions to ethnography are embodied in dozens of conference papers, journal articles and books, and were recognized by Sorbonne University, which conferred upon him a doctoral degree (Docteur 3eme Cycle) in 1966 — quite a feat for someone who dropped out of high school at 17.
Verger continued to study and document his chosen subject right until his death in Salvador, at the age of 94. During that time he became a professor at the Federal University of Bahia in 1973, where he was responsible for the establishment of the Afro-Brazilian Museum in Salvador; and served as visiting professor at the University of Ifé in Nigeria. The non-profit Pierre Verger Foundation in Salvador, which he established to continue his work, holds more than 63,000 photos and negatives taken until 1973, as well as his papers and correspondence.
His life has been documented in a book by Jérôme Souty and a movie

From Sugar Palaces to Colonial Fortresses: discussing the heritage of Dutch Brazil
The Mauritshuis Museum stands nowadays as testament of the political presence of Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, governor of the Dutch Colony in Brazil. From 1630 to 1654, the colony became a source of wealth through the production of sugarcane and its possible implications in the slave trade. Today, the Mauritshuis houses part of the Royal Collection Masterpieces of seventeenth-century Dutch Gold Age, and it is one of the most visited museums of the Netherlands. Recently, the institution came under fire after removing a bust of Nassau from its foyer, being accused of trying to “erase” history and distancing itself from its colonial past. In Brazil, Nassau’s legacy is also expressed in architecture, such as the Fort of Itamaracá, an important touristic historical attraction. This presentation intends to discuss how monuments of Dutch Brazilian colonial history can be studied regarding their symbolic power both in Brazil and the Netherlands in the contemporaneity.

Grand Egyptian Museum First Exhibition[SW-TV-NEWS]
Grand Egyptian Museum First Exhibition[SW-TV-NEWS]
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), also known as the Giza Museum, is a planned museum of artifacts of ancient Egypt. Described as the largest archaeological museum in the world,[4] the museum is under construction and is scheduled to be partially open in 2018 exhibiting the full Tutankhamun collection with many pieces to be displayed for the first time. The museum is sited on 50 hectares (120 acres) of land approximately two kilometers from the Giza pyramids and is part of a new master plan for the plateau.
Overview
The design of the building was decided by means of an architectural competition. The competition was announced on 7 January 2002. The organisers received 1557 entries from 82 countries, making it the second largest architectural competition in history. In the second stage of the competition, 20 entries were asked to submit additional information. Judging was complete by 2 June 2003. The competition was won by the company Heneghan Peng from Dublin, Ireland, winning 250,000 dollars. Second place was awarded to Coop Himmelblau. Héctor Vigliecca and Luciene Quel (Brazil), Ruben Verdi (Italy), Michael Zimmermann, Engel und Zimmermann (Germany), Fernando Pardo Calvo y Bernardo Garcia Tapia, Nuno Filipe Morais Monteiro (Portugal) and Martin Roubik (Czech Republic) received Honorable Mention. The building is designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, Buro Happold and Arup. The exhibition masterplan, exhibition design and museology is by Metaphor and Cultural Innovations Ltd.
The building is shaped like a chamfered triangle in plan. It sits on a site two kilometers west of the pyramids, near a motorway interchange. The building's north and south walls line up directly with the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Menkaure. In front of the building is a large plaza, filled with date plants. One of the main features of the museum is the translucent stone wall, made of alabaster, that makes up the front facade of the building. Inside the main entrance is a large atrium, where large statues will be exhibited.
On 2 February 2010, Hill International announced that Egypt's Ministry of Culture had signed a contract with a joint venture of Hill and EHAF Consulting Engineers to provide project management services during the design and construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
The total estimated project cost is US$ 550m, US$ 300m of which will be financed from Japanese loans, the remaining will be financed by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, other donations and international funds.
The new museum is designed to include the latest technology, including virtual reality. The museum will also be an international center of communication between museums, to promote direct contact with other local and international museums. The Grand Egyptian Museum will include a children's museum, conference center, training center, and workshops similar to the old Pharaonic places.
