Monteverro's wines - Italy Tuscany - Millésima
Millesima presents Monteverro wine estate, wine estate located in Tuscany (area Maremma), property of Georg Weber and managed by Michael Voegele and his team.
See the movie ►
Monteverro wine estate is located in the village of Capalbio in southern Tuscany, near the Mediterranean sea. It is a region full of culture, authenticity and tradition combining vines, olive trees and cypresses trees: a real postcard. The slopes are steep and the land (soils and subsoils) is one of the most mineral-rich (many ferruginous zones) around the world. Its Terroir consists of red clay with large stones.
It is thanks to result of a great passion that Monteverro able to express its character in each bottle a year, under the benevolence of Matthew Taunay (the winemaker) and the famous french consultant oenologist: Michel Rolland. The management and technical team works hard to ensure that this property of the Tuscan become a first great growth of Tuscany. Monteverro is definitely a great wine from Italy. This is a wine that you see, smell and taste.

Monteverro Revisited 2013 #106
The small town of Capalbio, north of Rome, is home of one of Italy´s unknown treasures among the most exciting wineries – Monteverro. The winery was founded in 2004 and dropped its first wines on the market in 2010 with the 2008 collection. A range of promising and fascinating wines like Tinata, a cuvée made of Syrah and Grenache, Terra di Monteverro, a young and really complex red wine made of Cabernet sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Merlot and Petit verdot and last but not least the monumental Monteverro, a grand vin, which exhibits any extras a wine lovers can dream of. By the way, like Terra di Monteverro it´s a Bordeaux blend.
The owner, Georg Weber and his wife Julia, put an exciting team together to fulfill their dream to produce high quality wines in the south side of the Maremma region in Tuscany. No one can to it better like the French winemaker Michel Rolland. And so, he was recruited. Together with Matthieu Taunay, a young and ultra-skilled winemaker from the Loire valley.
I visited Monteverro for the first time back in September 2011. It was a pleasure to taste and discover the wines. You can watch the interview here.
Once you feel that something is good, you always come back. So did I in May 2012. Enjoy the interview with Matthieu here.
In 2013 I finally met Michel Rolland to shoot a commercial for Monteverro. This video can be find here.
Unfortunately I couldn´t find my shooting of the 2010 tasting with Matthieu. I was really pissed off, because I thought that it had deleted them on my hard disk. Well, you can imagine how happy I was, when I rediscovered them last week ago.
Although the interview is nearly two years old, I decided to upload it in my archive, because I think it's still worth watching and hearing the philosophy of Monteverro. The grand vin is a classic. A wine, which is able to age nearly over the next 30 years easily.

Cantina Monteverro

Tinata Monteverro 2011 Capalbio IGt Toscana

Monteverro with Matthieu Taunay part.1 #038
The winery was founded by the German businessman and wine lover Georg Weber in 2006. After years of searching for a suitable terroir, Georg found in the southern Maremma region (Tuscany) near the small town of Capalbio a place, where he could realize his vision for the production of long-lived red wines after the model Bordeaux. It is arguable that Monteverro is one of the most modern wineries in Italy. At the same time, the best winemakers in the industry were hired to fill top quality in the future. We are talking about Michel Rolland and Matthieu Taunay. Together, the two complement each other like butter on hot toast (November 21. 2011).

Cabernet sauvignon 45%, Cabernet franc 35%, Merlot 10% and Petit verdot 10% make up the blend. Dark purplered colored with a light transparency. Very shy while tasting it, but like Terra di Monteverro 2009 it shows very rudimental its power and elegance. Créme de cassis, dark cherries, pepper, herbs and lots of freshly made blueberry marmalade. Profound and Juicy. Mega-fine-grained tannins of high quality and a refreshing acidity. Distinctive from the 2008 vintage, this Monteverro is definitely cooler without lacking power. Great finish. Best from 2016 through 2030+ (May 2012). 96 PS

Monteverro with Matthieu Taunay part.2 #039
Georg Weber has only been involved in Tuscany for a few years now. With the winery Monteverro, the young German wanted to compete with the best winemakers. He succeeded – although many initially spoke against it.
This video contains part.2 of the interview with winemaker Matthieu Taunay of Monteverro (November 28. 2011).
