Tasmania Hiking- Montezuma Falls
Montezuma Falls, near Rosebery on Tasmania's west coast. My favourite waterfall in Tassie, dropping 104 metres over threee tiers. This video is taken out of the longer Tasmania Road Trip Day 4 video, although this clip has some extra footage as well.
Montezuma Falls 4wd track / Waterfalls of Tasmania
On the west coast of Tasmania is Montezuma Falls.
There is a walk in option (3hrs return) or a 4wd track.
The track follows the old North East Dundas Tramway (closed in 1932) through rainforest to the spectacular Montezuma Falls, at 104m one of the highest waterfalls in Tasmania.
From Zeehan, take the B27 for approximately 5 km to the Murchison Highway and turn left (north). Another 5 km on is the Melba Flats railway siding turn right here onto the 4WD track. It is approximately 14 kms to the carpark and a few hundred metres walk to the falls across a suspension bridge.
There were loads of washouts, followed by more and more deeper puddles and small creek crossings. There were a few technical spots and one very off camber section but all in all not a difficult drive at all.
The Montezuma Falls were beautiful. There is a thin steel sway-bridge across the gorge and gives an awesome view of the drop! We spent about 10 mins there having a chat and taking some photos before returning to the 4wds to head back.
There is also an alternate route out through the Ring River track that comes out near Renison Bell. This track is graded hard and should not be attempted when there is a high rainfall or if you are travelling alone. The sign states “ 'Extreme Grade 4wd Track Only. A minimum of two well equipped 4wds, and dangerous, possible life threatening river crossings, impassable in heavy rain. Unfortunately we did not get a chance to try this track on our visit as it was very late in the afternoon and we were in a convoy of cars where we decided it best to take the same way out as we came in.
The return trip was a lot faster than on the way, I guess we felt more comfortable on the tracks and were more familiar with the terrain! On the way to the falls with all the stops etc., we ticked over 2.5 hours and saved a heap of time on the way back!

Australia: Tasmania 4wd Part 3 | Montezuma | Ring River | Jacobs Ladder | Bellington [2018] #141
Tasmania - A inspirational 4wd travel documentary about the West Coast of Australia's Apple island. Once more we discover the uniquely beautiful and often hard to reach places Tasmania has to offer. With our 4wd we are exploring the more challenging offroad tracks and locations not readily available to most people. Completely self-sufficient we were overlanding and camping at some magic spots.
In part three of our off road adventure we The next morning we were greeted by a gorgeous sunrise and we proceeded north back up the beach, made our way back through Zeehan and up to the spectacular Montezuma Falls .
From Montezuma, we existed via the notorious (classified extreme) Ring River Road and headed north east, cross country via Table Mountain where we stopped at Lake Cethana Dam to enjoy the views and a nice little break before heading on again.
After a brief stop in Launceston we made our way up into the Ben Lomond National Park and drove the amazing Jacobs Ladder. This ancient landscape formed by glacial activity is truly a sight to behold.
From here we continued traveling north and back onto the coast arriving at Bridport. Entering the beach and dune systems we travelled toward Bellingham through the Double Sandy Point Conservation Area. We spend a couple of days relaxing and enjoying the beach before heading back to Devonport to conclude our trip.
Tasmania 4wd – Montezuma Falls Track – This is a Medium grade, 14.5 km track running along the cutting from the original N E Dundas Tramway. Due to this fact it is mostly flat or has a gentle gradient other than a few creek crossings such as Kapi and the Great Northern Creek where the timber bridges are no longer in place and the track drops down through the creek lines. This track is very muddy with allot of standing water however it is mostly firm based and wont present to many issues to any dual range 4wd with all terrain or mud tyres. Note – this track is narrow with minimal spaces to pass oncoming vehicles
Tasmania 4x4 – Ring River Road – Approximately 12kms in length this is a Hard grade track consisting of deep mud, potentially dangerous river crossings, steep slippery slopes and large rock steps. This track is weather dependant and only suitable for experienced drivers with well-prepared vehicles. It is also advisable to travel with at least two other vehicles for safety. Note – this track is far more easily traversed from the Montezuma Falls Track back down to the Murchison Hwy rather than the other way around
Tasmania 4wd – Jacobs Ladder – Situated in the Ben Lomond national Park 50kms South East of Launceston the road from the boundary of the National park to the ski village at the top is approximately 10km’s long and climbs to an altitude of 1400mtrs. Between June and September, snow chains must be carried and the road may be closed at short notice due to snow and ice. The road is currently being upgraded and a 30km/h speed limit is being enforced.
Tasmania 4wd – St Albans Bay – Also known as the Bridport to Bellingham Traverse. This track, approximately 22km’s long and rated hard, offers stunning coastal views, beach and dune driving with several fairly well-sheltered campsites along the way within the dune areas

The Most Beautiful 4WD Track - Montezuma Falls
The infamous Tassie track Montezuma! The track can vary depending on the rain. The day we decided to do it was blue skies and it rained about 3 days prior. As you can see it was still very wet with a lot of boggy holes. The track should normally take 4 hours return, it took us about 8 hours! so im guess the track was in very poor condition when we did it.
There are some steep inclines and descents were you may feel comfortable to have a second vehicle to winch off. There are plenty of trees so if your solo then its not too bad. We didn't need to use the winch as we picked our lines really well ( Good work Amyee). When you reach the end of the track you get to see the Montezuma waterfall which comes with a suspended bridge.
There is an alternative to seeing Montezuma falls which is a 4km walk which we have heard is relatively easy.
Enjoy the video guys as we enjoyed making it :).

Tasmania: Strahan & Montezuma Falls - Lost in Australia
La giornata comincia con un tour della cittadina Strahan, una delle più caratteristiche d'Australia.
Nella foresta pluviale del centro Tasmania facciamo una fantastica escursione lungo la ferrovia dismessa fino a Montezuma Falls.
Williamsford and Montezuma Falls
My mum spent her childhood here in Williamsford, Tasmania with her family. It was once a booming mining town and is now one of Tasmania's ghost towns. Mum's uncle was buried alive at the 'send off' at just 16 years of age.
We wandered through what may have been her backyard and saw the 'billy cart hill' she used to play on with her friends as a child. This is the first time she has been back since she was a young girl.
Not far from the solitary plaque that stands where Williamsford once thrived is Montezuma Falls ... named after an Aztec emperor of Mexico or a mining company? Or both? ????????♀️
Today mum, dad, Chris and I headed off through the rainforest here on the west coast to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Tasmania.
The track to the falls follows the historic route of the former North East Dundas Tramway from Williamsford (where my mum lived when she was just 4 years old!) right to the base of Montezuma Falls.
The signs say it should take 3 hours return and is an 8km walk - but I tracked with my Apple Watch and it was 10.6 km and took just under 3 hours!
It also states (everywhere!) that it’s an easy walk. It is, but today (in Summer) there were slippery logs, heaps of mud and some slippery rocks to negotiate which was fine for us but maybe something to consider if you are looking for an even, dry walk. It would also have been nice to know before one of us (not me!) wore thongs ????♀️
This is just one of many mountain bike tracks in the area that we would love to explore on our e-bikes! ????
The signs make it clear that while bikes are welcome, pedestrians always have right of way.????♀️????♂️
The track is almost entirely through beautiful, open rainforest. There are so many lovely trees and giant ferns, fungi and wildlife.
We were lucky enough to have a huge black snake slither across the path right under our feet, a fuzzy caterpillar that we call ‘fur Elise’ (known to give a nasty welt if they bite you!) dangling from a thread in the middle of the path, a White’s Thrush (bird) bouncing around the ground and a leech that we found on dads hat. ????
There are old bridges and plenty of remnants of the old railway line as you make your way down the path and interpretation panels to give you a better idea of what it was once like.
Below the waterfall there was once a wooden trestle bridge, almost 50 metres long and about 15 metres high. Today all that’s left are old pieces of timber, moss-covered concrete piers and rusty bolts.
Just before you get to the falls there’s an epic swing bridge that crosses the gorge and gives an incredible view of both the falls and back down the river. It’s crazy narrow (about a foot) and not something you’d catch me riding my mountain bike across! Although I know 100% that Chris would be all over it ???? Mum didn’t even get a foot on!
Continue along the path just a little further from the swing bridge and you’ll find yourself on the viewing platform at the base of the waterfall. From here it’s not hard at all to believe that this is the highest and most spectacular waterfall in Tasmania.
We clambered up and over the rocks to sit and watch the water cascading down this magnificent horsetail waterfall. It’s a lovely place to sit and just ‘be’ ☺️
I can see why Montezuma Falls is known as one of the most rewarding short day walks in Tasmania. ????????
✔️There is a toilet at the very beginning of the track (always good to know!)
✔️The walk is free.
✔️No parks pass is needed
✔️There is limited parking.
????Follow the signs to Williamsford and Montezuma Falls (2km south of Rosebery) on the Murchison Highway (A10)

Tasmania's Prettiest Waterfall | Russell Falls
Russell Falls makes a great day trip and will give you a real taste of Tasmania's magnificent wilderness within an easy drive from Hobart.
Russell Falls is arguably Tasmania's prettiest waterfall. It is Tasmania's most photographed and one of the easiest to get to.
The falls are in Mount Field National Park, just over a 1 hour drive from Hobart.
The 20 minute return walk to the falls is a good track and boardwalk through a lovely rainforest. The walk passes through towering swamp gums and species typical of wet forests and cool temperate rainforest such as dogwood, musk and myrtle. Closer to the falls track is framed by stunning tall tree ferns.
The two other falls in the park, Lady Barron Falls and Horseshoes Falls, are enchanting in their own way and if you have the time worth the extra effort.
On the day we only took the extra time to check out Horseshoe Falls - to make a second 15km trip further up the mountain to Lake Dobson.
With Dramatic mountain scenery and unique alpine plant communities are a feature. We were surprised and amazed on the day that there was snow! we took a quick walk all around Dobson Lake.

Over in Tassie it takes an afternoon of rain to turn a track from an easy Sunday drive to one of the wildest adventures you can go on. We tackled the track before Christmas and had over an inch of rain the night before heading off on a mission to find Tasmania's Largest waterfall! The start of the track showed us exactly what we were in for and we came accross a couple of 4x4s who had turned back! The track is signed as 'impassable in heavy rain' and we were travelling solo. We had just installed the Runva winch and were relying on the abundance of trees to lend a helping hand if we needed it. After waiting a few days for the rain to pass we decided to give it a crack!! It was epic, it was fun, it was wet, it was muddy and it was a fantastic full day out!
We took the Montezuma Falls track in and left via the Ring River road track lots of comments from Feb 2018 saying it was a reasonably easy but slow going... Well after the rain I can assure you if you're looking for a fun and typical wild Tasmanian track head off to see the falls!
Kirby was the driver for this track and handled the beast extremely well. We left our tyres inflated as the ute is currently sitting at factory height, so we needed all the clearance we could manage!. Luckily with the help of the extra set of wheels and the aggressive tred pattern on the Mickey Thompsons was enough to make our way through on this occasion!
Highlights
- The Waterfall (of course)
- The hidden Tunnel on the drive in
- Leaving via the EPIC ring River road!
How long?
Track says 1hr to the falls but it's at least 2-3hrs on a wet day so definitely go early in the day to leave time to make your way out especially if leaving via ring River road track.
