Montinore Estate at Made In Oregon
From Made In Oregon's Sommelier: “I am so proud to have Montinore Estates as the featured winery for our gift baskets with wine. Why? Because the winery embodies so much of what many Oregonians strive for in life. This family-run business, a beautiful, state-of-the-art winery and tasting room that is only 30 minutes from Portland, became certified as Bio-dynamic in 2008. Bio-dynamic farming is kind of like Organic-plus; it is one of the most sustainable forms of agriculture, creating healthier food for healthier people and a healthier planet. I visited the beautiful tasting room in the middle of their vineyards in Forest Grove, and was floored by the down-to-earth hospitality, but ultimately…it was the wines that hooked me.

Montinore Vineyard Episode 2
The soil at Montinore Estate is loess from the Missoula Floods. The Missoula Floods... well that takes us back a bit further in history, like 13,000 to 15,000 years. Rudy Marchesi, Immediate Past President and Partner at the winery, took us into the tasting room to show us on the map, (the beautiful Willamette Valley map created by the Willamette Valley Wine Association) and paint the picture for us of the floods and the soils that came from these floods.
At the end of the last ice age, there was an ice dam in the Clark Fork River in what is now Idaho. This backed up the water from a finger of the Codilleran Ice Sheet that was melting and creating the Glacial Lake Missoula. As the water pressure built, the ice plug was forced upwards releasing cataclysmic flood waters 500 feet deep down the Columbia River to the ocean. After the surge of water, the plug would drop back into place and the lake would refill. Then every seventy five years or so, the plug would get pushed up and more flood water would be released. The area that was flooded covered almost half of what is now Washington State on it’s eastern side and followed the Columbia Gorge to the ocean. It also branched off at the mouth of the Willamette river creating a lake that covered much of the Willamette Valley as far south as Eugene. Mind you, Glacial Lake Missoula was in Montana…yet another Montana and Oregon link for Montinore.
