Barcelona's Montjuïc Castle
Jessica Bowler goes up to the highest point of Montjuïc to visit the castle of the same name. This castle is one of the most representative spots of Catalan history and identity, and also a great place to take in views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Barcelona: Montjuic Cable Car 1
Well, here we are at the Teleferic, waiting to go to Montjuic, I think that's the pronunciation, and it's taken us an hour waiting in the queue to get here. And we're at the top of the tower, and we are off!
As you see, if I sweep round, it's quite crowded in here. And we're off.
If I come in, you'll see the Tower of Columbus
You can see the new bridge and walkway that runs from near the Columbus Tower to a huge shopping mall. Notice you can't get from there to the Teleferic station of Barcelona.
This is the cruise terminal.
This cable car was built for the 1929 Exhibition.
You used to be able to stop here, so you could have a walk round, but this tower is now closed, so you can't come up. Pity,
Anyway, here we are. Oh, bit of a bump there. Well, we're going towards the edge here -' I think it's coming off the rails, we're all going to die! Oh no, my mistake, we're safe, I think.'
However, it is quite a long way down there.
Now there are the aptly called three chimneys. They used to be part of a factory, they left them up. They look like one from here, but you'll have to take my word for it, there are three.
Here's Barcelona, and up there, there's another tower, built by Norman Foster.
Down here the yellow vans of the Post or Correos - yellow seems to be the colour, Germany has yellow as well, I like the horn on the German ones.
Well, here is the Hotel Miramar, and the final station Mirador. The castle is up there, you might just be able to see the tower on the left.
Anyway, that was it, 1.3 km, quite a thrill, really. Helen's snapping away frantically, I'll close now and show you the view - the famous view - from the top.
Well, there goes the cable car, and we're near the door...actually, we're at the Mirador Restaurant, because I fancied a 'bocadillo con queso' and a drink.
It's quite pleasant here, not crowded either and catered by mandarin chineses, we makes me feel a bit at home. Here's a sweep round.
We're sitting on the sea side, for which you pay approximately one euro more a dish for the privilege of not sitting overlooking the city.
Well, there we are. A worthwhile experience, but watch out for those queues. I was told that it opens at eleven, and that's a good time to go because there are no people there.
Please have a look our video of the next stage of the Montjuic cable car (no wind!) up to the Castle itself:

VLOG - Montjuic Castle 2016 - Barcelona Spain
In this VLOG post we spent the day exploring the beautiful Monjuic Castle. I see that I spelled the name wrong on the screen, so I would like to send my apologies out for that.
From Montjuic Castle you have a great view over the city and the cruise ship and import ports. This was an old fort used to guard the entrance to the city. It is placed in a great position.
Montjuic Castle is not so much a great attraction, as there is very little besides walls to look at, but the views alone made the trip worth it. We took a bus from the city center up - as there was a bus that went straight to the entrance.
Video of this VLOG to Montjuic Castle was taken in June 2016.

Jose Rizal's Prison Cell at Montjuic Castle in Barcelona, Spain
The Philippine national hero Jose Rizal was among the famous prisoners lodged at the Montjuic Castle, the military fortress atop the Montjuic mountain in Barcelona.
Rizal was incarcerated there in October 1896, after which he was deported to Manila to face charges he had instigated rebellion against Spain.
A few weeks later, on December 30, 1896, he was executed by firing squad in what is now Manila's Luneta Park.
The Filipino Web Channel visited Rizal's cell in Montjuic Castle on Monday, June 2, 2014 but a photographic exhibit was going on in four of the cells, called sala, including Rizal's own, that would last till end of June, and prevented us from taking a detailed video.
Rizal's name is prominently displayed at the entrance door. At the ante-chamber his old photographs appear with a citation by Barcelona authorities.
The Sala Jose Rizal was inaugurated in April 2011.
Excerpts:
. . . Aboard the steamer, Isla de Panay, Rizal left Manila for Spain on September 2, 1896 . . . By the eve of September 7, the steamer reached Singapore and on the 30th, while Isla de Panay was on its voyage along the Mediterranean Sea, a telegraphic message was received by Captain A. Alemany, the ship skipper, ordering him to arrest and confine Jose Rizal in his cabin until they arrive in Barcelona on the 3rd of October. Early morning of October 6, Rizal was transferred to Montjuich (sic) Castle where he was visited by Eulogio Despujol who was then the military Commander of Cataluña. By 8 o'clock in the evening, aboard the steamer Colon, Rizal left Barcelona for Manila. - From Jose Rizal: Trial and Martyrdom at Bagumbayan, Wikipilipinas {

the Castell de Montjuïc, built on the highest part of the mountain at the end of the seventeenth century and from where you can observe from Barcelona and the port. It now houses a military museum
Montjuïc is a hill 177 meters high located to the south of Barcelona, the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia, near the industrial port. The name is derived from the Catalan medieval Mont dels Jueus which means mountain of the Jews, probably due to the presence of a cemetery on the mountain jew

Montjuïc Castle & Views Over Barcelona, Spain - 11th July, 2014
Barcelona's Montjuïc is a broad shallow hill with a relatively flat top overlooking the harbour, to the southwest of the city centre. The eastern side of the hill is almost a sheer cliff, giving it a commanding view over the city's harbour immediately below. The top of the hill (a height of 184,8 m) was the site of several fortifications, the latest of which (the Castle of Montjuïc) remains today. The fortress largely dates from the 17th century, with 18th-century additions.
This film features views from the castle over the city of Barcelona and its port below, where the container freight terminal sprawls, and where three cruise ships, the MSC Splendida, Thomson Dream and a Costa cruise ship are berthed.
Barcelona: Montjuic Cable Car 2
This is the second half of our cable car trip to Montjuic Castle in Barcelona. Having crossed high above the harbour, and enjoyed lunch in the restaurant at the Teleferic station, we walked up to the next one and took the smaller cable car up to the Castle itself:
Well, we're now inside the Teleferic, going up from halfway up Montjuic to the Castle.
I don't know if you can see this, the windows are extremely dirty.
There's only two of us in this. It costs eleven dollars, sorry, euros fifty return. Now you can walk down - I wouldn't suggest walking up - through gardens, but it's not a short distance.
Ooh, a bit bumpy!
Now halfway along, there seems to be some kind of dog-leg, but we'll see when we get there!
Now the sun's behind us - we arranged that...and you may be able to see, if I can get past Helen, Barcelona spread out below.
(Pass her quickly so the focus doesn't change)
The first station is called 'Mirador'. In fact there are an awful lot of things called 'Mirador' or 'Miramar' round here.
This is the way you'd walk down, it would be quite pleasant in the Spring or the Winter, I think, but it's pretty hot here although not as hot, apparently, as it has been earlier in the Summer. Even the Barcelonians say it was too hot, so there you are.
There are roads up here, so if you had a car, you could drive.
(Bumps)Ooh, sorry about that!
Here's our right-angled turn, and it now appears we don't get off on the way up.
We'll soon find out, because it's quite clear, the guy in front didn't, you don't get off here, except on the way down.
Well, there's a big tour bus, over there, on the way down.
Oh, here we go again, and it's a bit bumpy!
Now we've turned right, so the view ahead is not so good. I'll get up and see if I can get closer. There's the castle coming up.
Just as I get up Helen gets up, because she's seen the nice shots as well.
Well, this is it, and here, Ladies and Gentlemen, is Barcelona.

36 Hours in...Barcelona - Montjuïc Cable Car Ride To Castell de Montjuïc January 27, 2018
Barcelona, Barcelona! So nice I had to say it twice!
Part of my experience in Barcelona was the ride on the Montjuïc Cable Car to the Montjuïc Castle (Castell de Montjuïc). The views of the city and sea are breathtaking (honestly I can’t find another word to describe it). I enjoyed the panoramic views of the Iberian Peninsula and the history of Mount Jupiter. The Hop-On, Hop-Off Tour bus stops at the foot of the Montjuïc Cable Car. You can purchase a one-way or round trip ticket. Be sure to ask for a coupon book from the tour company for great deals!

CASTELL DE MONJUIC: Jose Rizal prison Dungeon revealed!
Standing on a vantage point 173 metres above the port, Montjuïc Castle commands stunning views of the city. Now a peaceable place, the memory of this fortress endures in Barcelona as a symbol of repression but also of the city's struggles during different periods in its history.
The top of Montjuïc is the ideal place for a bastion of defence, with 360º views of the city below. However, this military enclave wasn't built until the Reapers' War in 1640. In 1652, the fortress, which stands on the site of a watchtower, came under royal ownership and, some 50 years later, was one of the key defence points in the War of the Spanish Succession, between 1705 and 1714.

It served as a prison, often holding political prisoners, until the time of General Franco. The castle was also the site of numerous executions. In 1897, an incident popularly known as Els processos de Montjuïc prompted the execution of anarchist supporters, which then led to a severe repression of the workers' struggle for their rights. On different occasions during the Spanish Civil War, both Nationalists and Republicans were executed there, each at the time when the site was held by their opponents. The Catalan nationalist leader Lluís Companys i Jover was also executed there in 1940, having been extradited to the Franco government by the Nazis.

Places to see in ( Barcelona - Spain ) Montjuic Castle
Montjuïc Castle is an old military fortress, with roots dating back from 1640, built on top of Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It currently serves as a Barcelona municipal facility. The foundation stone for the basic fortification was laid out in 1640. A year later, in January 1641, the fort saw its first battle, during the Catalan Revolt when the Principality of Catalonia challenged Spain's authority. On orders from the King of Spain, Pedro Fajardo, heading an army of 26,000 men, proceeded to crush the revolt. The Spanish recaptured several cities, but they were defeated at the Battle of Montjuïc by the Catalan rebels, led by Francesc de Tamarit.
Fifty years later, in 1694, new bastions and battlements were erected and the fortress became a castle. In the Siege of Barcelona (1705) the fortress was captured by the British 6th Regiment of Foot led by Lt.-Col William Southwell, paving the way for the siege of Barcelona itself. Southwell was afterwards made Governor of the castle.
The old fort was however demolished in 1751 by the Spanish engineer and architect Juan Martin Cermeño, creating the current structure, still standing. The final shape of the castle took form during 1779 and 1799, when major construction works took place in order to improve the castle and accommodate the needs. It was also during this time that the castle was equipped with 120 cannons.
During the Napoleonic Wars, the French Army entered Barcelona, and, on orders from Napoleon, they also captured the castle without firing a shot as the troops guarding the castle were ordered not to fight the French.
In the last 350 years Montjuïc Castle has played a decisive role in the history of Barcelona becoming a symbol of submission after the Catalan defeat to Spain in 1714. Since then the Montjuïc canons have bombarded the city and its citizens on various occasions and Montjuïc has been used as a prison and torture centre repeatedly for three centuries.
The castle is infamous in Catalan history books because of its role in the civil war from 1936 to 1939 when both sides of the conflict imprisoned, tortured and shot political prisoners at Montjuïc, among them Lluís Companys, who was the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War. Companys was executed upon orders from the Franco regime at Montjuïc castle in 1940. Later in the 20th century, the castle became a military museum. In June 1963, Francisco Franco inaugurated the Military Armor Museum, the official name given to the institution.
