Fish´N Fins Ocean Leadership program Montserrat
Fish 'n Fins Ocean Leadership Program has began! We are empowering 10 existing and emerging local youth leaders to create their own campaigns to take action in protecting our ocean backyard.
From understanding plastic pollution to learning the ropes of digital media, we will empower our youth with tools needed to safeguard the future of ‘our ocean’, build climate resilience, and identify how we can use the blue economy to develop our island.
The program offers leadership skills, marine awareness, blue internship placements, citizen science, ocean advocacy and blue innovation over a period of one year.
This program is provided by Fish ‘n Fins Inc. free of cost to the youths. If you would like to donate, contribute, or learn more about this program visit our website for more information at aquafishnfins.com

What Do People Do For Fun on the Island of Montserrat?
The Montserrat Ghost Town of Plymouth
The Soufrière Hills Volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat began erupting in 1995 and continued until 2010. During this period the flows covered many of the small communities of Montserrat and the capital city of Plymouth. The pyroclastic flows are over 25 feet deep in spots. The entire southern part of the island is and exclusion zone. A permit is required is to enter specific sections of the zone including the ghost town of Plymouth. This permit will provide a one hour visit to the zone with a guide and police escort. The guide is in continual contact with the Montserrat Volcano Observatory via radio and must keep the vehicle running while in the zone. The volcano is still active and could erupt at any time. if you like visiting ghost towns then Plymouth should be high on your list. Plymouth is often referred to the Pompeii of the Caribbean.
Montserrat Oct 2015-Joe's Show
Some highlights from our expedition to the Jewel of the Caribbean, Montserrat. Undertaken in October of 2015, we conducted 600 dives in order to perform scientific assessment around the island. This information will go to inform a new Blue Halo, the signature program of our colleagues over at the Waitt Institute. We have taken some liberties with this raw footage Joe put together for a presentation after the expedition, adding a generic soundtrack. We'll have something more through a bit later but for now we figured something was better than nothing! Enjoy.

MONTSERRAT: SOUFRIERE VOLCANO ERUPTION LATEST SITUATION
English/Nat
The recent increase in volcanic activity on the Caribbean island of Montserrat has led to a wave of human suffering.
But as with many natural disasters the human spirit has prevailed, and hope is even now rising from the ashes.
APTV has been visiting a shelter for elderly people made homeless by the eruptions, to see how one extraordinary woman is hoping to provide a permanent solution to their plight.
The Soufriere Hills Volcano, which first came to life two years ago.
The mountain has been spewing forth even more lava and ash in the last three months.
The new eruptions have virtually destroyed the island's capital, Plymouth.
Of Montserrat's pre-volcano population of 11 thousand, only about four thousand remain.
Many of these are elderly, and have been forced to turn to others for help.
The Scraps Memorial Shelter is just one of many public shelters on the island.
It is run almost entirely by the efforts of one woman, Marjorie Joseph.
As well as providing medical expertise and making sure the residents are well fed, the nurse administers to their spiritual needs.
UPSOUND: (English)
But we know. So come with Mary regardless of what is happening right left and center. It's not only Montserrat, you have people all over the world in refugee camps, you have people with all sorts of things happening to them. So, don't feel that we are the only ones, don't feel that we are neglected. Everyday we get a piece of food to eat, we are in a shelter, we get clothes to put on. God is taking care of us, so why should we kill ourselves. Hold the fort.
SUPER CAPTION: Marjorie Joseph, Nurse and Shelter Supervisor
The shelter was only intended as a temporary measure, but with no signs of the island's volcanic activity stopping, there are now plans for a more permanent building.
SOUNDBITE: (English):
We are building a permanent shelter for the elderly, for these people. We are not going to allow them to go back out there. You know, it's too difficult for them. Even if they said that people can go back later on, they are already shocked, shaken up, and they don't want to go back out there. So, we are building a permanent home, under the government and the Red Cross, and people who have heard about us and helped to send in funds to help us -- we are so glad -- people from America, from England, people from all parts of the world.
SUPER CAPTION: Marjorie Joseph, Nurse and Shelter Supervisor
The Golden Years home for the elderly will eventually replace the ramshackle building.
The island's government is overseeing the project, along with the Red Cross.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
They told me, because I have no idea about building it, when I inquired about it that in the next six to eight months they might be ready with it. Now, I don't know speed limits or whatever, but they know how soon it should be able to finish it. So, I take what they say. At the same time we are going ahead smoothly here, taking care of the elderly, doing our best.
SUPER CAPTION: Marjorie Joseph, Nurse and Shelter Supervisor
The site of the new building has been cleared and work has begun.
Marjorie Joseph will stop working and helping, as she has since the first time the volcano knocked on her own door.
SOUNDBITE:(English)
And we prayed, and we prayed and when we hear the stones falling in showers on the roof and we heard the roaring of the mountains, we knew something must happen tonight. So we prayed and I remember telling the lord: Father, please stop it, please stop it. He had the power, and he did, he stopped it. I can't forget.
SUPER CAPTION: Marjorie Joseph, Nurse and Shelter Supervisor
It warned these may be more intense and last longer than those already experienced.

GOM News: New Ferry Terminal, Marine Village & Gun Hill Project Update
*New Ferry Terminal For Port Little Bay - The Montserrat Development Corporation (MDC) is assisting with the construction of a new port arrival facility at Little Bay. The intention is to have the new facility up and running in time for the upcoming Christmas and Festival Seasons. The facility which will be approximately 3,000 square feet in area will cater to both incoming and outgoing ferry passengers. Luggage other than hand luggage will be moved from the ferry to the terminal in vehicles and will be placed in the baggage area for collection by passengers and outgoing non hand baggage will also be transported to the ferry. The intention is to give all Montserratians and visitors a more pleasant welcoming experience at Port Little Bay.
*Gun Hill Project - As excavation enters its second week, Gun Hill is quickly disappearing. The Gun Hill project has created 26 additional jobs on the island. Gun Hill is historically and geographically linked to the Carr's Bay Gun Battery built by natives in 1624. The material from Gun Hill is being stored at Little Bay, to be used as fill in the land reclamation process for the Little Bay Town Centre.
*Marine Village Taking Shape - Marine Village comprises 4 different bars/restaurants plus a dive shop/bar.
-Dive shop/Bar: Will house a Dive shop with room for storage of relevant gear. Will also provide bar and snack facilities for patrons. Will have nautical flair in keeping with water theme.
-Wine Bar: Will bring a greater degree of sophistication to the dining/bar experience
-Restaurant/Bar: This operation will have a fuller menu than the other bars and will be run more as a restaurant than a bar.
-Sports Bar: As the name implies this operation will include TV screens to show major sporting events. The menu will lean more towards finer food/snacks rather than full meals.
The timetable is to have all four buildings completed in time for the operators to set up their equipment and be open to the public in time for the upcoming 2013 Festival season. The roofs have been completed on Buildings 1 and 4 and work will soon commence on the roofs for the remaining two buildings.A unique feature of the Marine Village facilities are the use of tiles made from volcanic rocks collected from the Belham Valley. Another interesting feature is the use of old electric poles from the unsafe zone to construct building columns. The roofs are covered with synthetic palm thatch giving the buildings an indigenous appearance.

Lionfish roundup! Montserrat, West Indies
Lionfish are an invasive species that appeared throughout the Caribbean reef system in the past 10 years; they arrived in Montserrat about 4 years ago. Lionfish are voracious predators that attack and consume huge amounts of juvenile native fish species. They unfortunately are also prolific breeders that can produce an incredible 10,000 and 30,000 unfertilized eggs every 4 days year around, approximately 2 MILLION eggs per year! Bad news!
The best way to deal with this invasion is to remove them from a reef...TIME TO GO HUNTING!
You have to eat them to beat them!
