“Our Lady of Montserrat” Roman Catholic Church is located high on a ridge of the Central Range in the village of Tortuga, facing westward towards the Gulf of Paria. It is a wooden church, which was built by its first priest and architect, Fr. Marie Jules Dupoux, and blessed on December 24, 1878. The church was named after the Montserrat Hills on which it stands, a name given by the Spanish settlers who named the area after the Montserrat Mountains of Catalonia, in the region of Barcelona, Spain. Over 135 years old and arguably the oldest church in Trinidad and Tobago, the church of Our Lady of Montserrat is also well known as a Shrine to Our Lady. A special festival is held every year on the Sunday nearest the 8th September and is attended by hundreds of patrons from all over Trinidad.
This church is well known in Trinidad and Tobago for its interesting architecture, the panoramic and breath-taking view of the Gulf of Paria and most of all for the wooden figure of the Black Virgin, built by a Spanish saint maker following the Spanish Colonial Folk Art style. No one knows when the statue was brought to Tortuga and it is assumed that Capuchin missionaries brought it to the parish. The church is also sometimes called the Church of Many Statues because it has statues of some 19 saints donated over the years by wealthy cocoa plantation owners. Beautiful stained glass windows, bought in France over 100 years ago adorn the three altars of the church. Also of great historical interest are the hand-painted “Stations of the Cross”, mounted in beautiful frames made of oak.
A restoration project was started in May 2001 and is now complete and the church re-occupied on Sunday 8th September, 2002, the festival day.

Montserrat - wildlife and heritage
Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).
This mini-documentary explores the history and wildlife of Montserrat, a UK Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. A series of volcanic eruptions began in 1995 and destroyed the capital Plymouth, which today is a modern-day pompeii. Tragically Pymouth today is a ghost town and two thirds of Montserrat lies in an exclusion zone. But the northern third of the island is home to approximately 5,000 Montserratians, and an incredible diversity of wildlife, including 10 species of bats, red-footed tortoises and a unique bird called the Montserrat Oriole. The island's tropical forests are recovering, as are diverse reefs offshore. Sadly, one of Montserrat's amphibians, a giant frog called the Mountain Chicken, was devastated, not just by the volcano, but by the introduction of deadly chytrid fungus. We follow pioneering conservation efforts undertaken by representatives of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.
Please note: although complementary to the BBC FOUR series, the 40 short mini-documentaries are not commissioned or editorially overseen by BBC.

E/V Nautilus Video Bite: Rare Deepwater Goosefish - Montserrat 2013
Goosefish, which are sometimes referred to as monkfish, or Lophius americanus, are commonly found in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean. However, this particular specimen is far less common, and is known as the deep water goosefish, Schaefer's Anglerfish, or Sladenia shaefersi. A member of the angler family, the deep water goosefish is recognizable by its bulbous brown body and the intricate patterning covering its back. To date, we know very little about the nature of Schaefer's Anglerfish, as less than ten have ever been captured. This was an incredibly rare moment in E/V Nautilus History.
