Kazan is the capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, and one of Russia's largest cities. It is a major industrial, commercial and cultural center, and remains the most important center of Tatar culture. Kazan lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in central European Russia.

A monument in tribute to people who devote their lives to helping others has been unveiled in the city of Kazan in Russia's republic of Tatarstan. While monuments to prominent philanthropists are nothing unusual, this one is special - it's been inspired by a local selfless pensioner who remains unfazed by the attention.

Беседа с учащимися московских вузов и курсантами военных училищ после возложения цветов к памятнику Минину и Пожарскому
4 ноября 2005 года
Москва, Красная площадь
QUESTION: Today is such a beautiful warm sunny day, and quite extraordinary for November. Our country is celebrating a wonderful Day of National Unity today for the first time. What is your personal opinion of our country's new tradition?
PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN: I can tell you that any person, you and myself included, generally enjoys holidays. Whomever you ask would reply that they enjoy holidays; everyone likes to celebrate.
It seems to me that the holiday's very name tunes to a certain mood. Indeed, it sounds inspiring unification, national unity. And the occasion is remarkable. We know that in 1611-1612 very serious events took place here. We always refer to the Kremlin as the political and spiritual centre of Russia. When there were enemies here, the existence of the entire Russian state was threatened. The liberation was the result of people from all different faiths and ethnicities uniting together. You know, as a matter of fact the movement began in the Volga Region, from Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan, and this is especially symbolic and important for our multinational country.
While we feel such unity inside ourselves, Russia will be invincible. QUESTION: Today's holiday, the Day of National Unity, also celebrates charitable activities organized today by representatives from different organizations and movements. And I believe that these charitable activities should rally and encourage people to do them not only on November 4, but as often as possible. What do you think?
VLADIMIR PUTIN: I agree with you and will try to formulate your idea and proposal today at the reception where, in addition to being with those people present here, we will be together with people from completely different layers of society who are invited to the Kremlin.
You will see that these people are famous, interesting and have done much for their country. With their lives they do a great deal for our people and our state. The overwhelming majority of them work not because they are paid for it, but because of their feeling of duty towards their country and their people.
What you said about philanthropy, about a feeling of comradeship, is one of our people's traditions, and I mean people in the broad sense since many peoples live in Russia. If one speaks in general about the Russian nation, charity is characteristic of each people of the Russian Federation, and of course this must be supported. I think that for its part, the state should pay more attention to these sorts of activities. So should our colleagues from the media who are here today.
QUESTION: Which idea do you think is capable of uniting our people even more, so that they can show even more civil initiative, like they did 400 years ago when people were united and when this helped end the Time of Troubles?
VLADIMIR PUTIN: The feeling of participating in state affairs.
QUESTION: Do you consider the question of further unifying the different peoples, faiths and political forces of Russia a pressing one, and how do you foresee going about this?
VLADIMIR PUTIN: Absolutely. Moreover, I would very much like for today's event and the tradition we create with this holiday, to help accomplish the task you just mentioned.
Our country has enormous cultural riches that are not present in any other state. Dozens of ethnicities live on the territory of our country. Together all these original languages and original cultures have a huge value, a value which exists in no other country in the world. We should treasure, develop and support this which, without a doubt, is our strength. For this reason I would like to repeat once again that the traditions begun by this holiday must work towards these goals.
Opening Ceremony - Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games
The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games began with a stunning Opening Ceremony on Friday evening (7 March) at Fisht Stadium with a volunteer cast of more than 2,500 people from the Krasnodar region of Russia taking centre stage, and two-time Paralympic champion swimmer Olesya Vladykina and six-time Paralympic champion cross-country skier Sergey Shilov lighting the Paralympic cauldron. With a theme of Breaking The Ice, the Opening Ceremony evoked the spirit of Russia and the importance of breaking down barriers and stereotypes faced by people around the world every day. During his Opening Ceremony speech, IPC President Sir Philip Craven said: Thirty-four years ago when the old Soviet Union declined the opportunity to stage the 1980 Paralympic Games in Moscow, the prospect of Russia staging its first Paralympic Games was nothing but a dream. But dreams do come true, and since winning the Games seven years ago, this part of Russia has undergone a monumental transformation. However, the biggest transformation for this country is still yet to come. In the same way that the city of Sochi has built a barrier free environment for athletes and officials to enjoy, I call upon all those who experience these Games to have barrier free minds, too. The Opening Ceremony began with 126 performers -- dressed in red, white and blue -- marching in perfectly synchronised formations to create dazzling patterns on the field of play and create a human wave of the Russian national flag. The actual flag was then carried into the centre of the stadium by eight people who have been instrumental in improving the lives of people with an impairment in Russia. The Pan-Russian Choir sang a captivating a cappella version of the Russian national anthem. Andree-Anne Gingras-Roy then played a glass organ that rose from underneath the stadium before 504 young ballerinas grace the stage to create patterns of snowflakes before forming the Paralympic Torch. Athletes competing paraded through the central ramp of the stadium, with woodland magic creatures and spirit birds guiding them to their seating area. Over the next nine days, these 547 athletes will compete for 72 sets of medals across five sports in what will be the first ever Paralympic Winter Games held in Russia. With 55 countries broadcast the Sochi 2014 Paralympics and Paralympic.org live streaming more than 300 hours of HD coverage, the Games are expected to break all viewing records and top athletes will become household names around the world. Sir Philip addressed the athletes, saying: You have here superb sporting venues to express your amazing talents and live up to the Paralympic values of determination and courage, inspiration and equality. Together you are the catalysts for change. United as one, you have the ability to change perceptions and alter attitudes like no other. You arrive here as the best prepared athletes ever to attend a Paralympic Winter Games. You will leave as role models, heroes, pioneers and most of all, Proud Paralympians. Dmitriy Chernyshenko, President and CEO of the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee, said: Thanks to the Paralympic Games, a new era in the history of Russia has begun, one without barriers and stereotypes. The Paralympic Games have changed us; they have changed our attitude to those close to us and ourselves. Together, we are learning to be more considerate and attentive to each other. After the Paralympic Flag entered the stadium and the Paralympic Agitos was created by 126 performers, the Athletes' Oath was taken by Russian world champion alpine skier Valeriy Redkozubov, the Officials' Oath by skiing judge Elena Mokerova and the Coaches' Oath by Russian alpine skiing head coach Alexander Nazarov. Pop singer Yulia Samoylova entertained the crowd with their stunning vocals later on in the evening, as 300 ice fisherman painted patterns across the stage. IPC Honorary Board member and opera singer Maria Guleghina sang to the audience on a giant ship as passed through the entire stadium, signifying breaking down barriers and tracing new paths for mankind. The Ceremony culminated with a cast of more than 1,000 torchbearers celebrating the arrival of the Paralympic Torch in the stadium before it was lit by Vladykina and Shilov, and a spectacular fireworks display erupted across the Olympic Park.

On the Eve by Ivan Turgenev | Audiobook with subtitles
On the Eve appeared in 1860, two years before Fathers and Sons, Turgenev's most famous novel. It is set in the prior decade (by the end of the novel, the Crimean War (1853-56) has already broken out. It centers on the young Elena Nikolaevna Stakhov, daughter of Nikolai Arteyemvitch and Anna Vassilyevna Stahov. Misunderstood by both her parents (Nikolai Artemyevitch is at least as interested in his German mistress as in members of her family) she is on friendly terms with both the would-be professor Andrei Petrovitch Bersenyev and the rising young sculptor Pavel Yakovitch Shubin, both of whom might be -- or might not be -- in love with her. The appearance of Dmitri Nikanorovitch Insarov, a young Bulgarian revolutionary who seeks independence for his nation,, alters the balance of her relationships however. The book is praised, among other things, for the way in which Turgenev manages to describe the varying emotions of a girl on the verge of womanhood. But it is also a portrayal of a kind of youthful Russian society striving towards a modern cosmopolitanism, that will shake off the parochialism and narrowness of its elders.
A geopolitical note: Bulgaria was, at the time, still part of the decaying Ottoman empire in the Balkans, but already the vultures were circling -- Russia, Britain, and France -- hoping to get what they could when the collapse came. Hence, in large part, the coming of the Crimean War, hence the Balkan conflicts of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, hence in part World War I, and ultimately the Balkan wars of the late twentieth century (Kosovo, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, etc. etc.). SUMMARY
=======
Yale University is an American private Ivy League research university in New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1701, it is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine Colonial Colleges chartered before the American Revolution.Chartered by Connecticut Colony, the Collegiate School was established by clergy to educate Congregational ministers. It moved to New Haven in 1716 and shortly after was renamed Yale College in recognition of a gift from British East India Company governor Elihu Yale. Originally restricted to theology and sacred languages, the curriculum began to incorporate humanities and sciences by the time of the American Revolution. In the 19th century, the college expanded into graduate and professional instruction, awarding the first Ph.D. in the United States in 1861 and organizing as a university in 1887. Its faculty and student populations grew after 1890 with rapid expansion of the physical campus and scientific research.
Yale is organized into fourteen constituent schools: the original undergraduate college, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and twelve professional schools. While the university is governed by the Yale Corporation, each school's faculty oversees its curriculum and degree programs. In addition to a central campus in downtown New Haven, the University owns athletic facilities in western New Haven, a campus in West Haven, Connecticut and forest and nature preserves throughout New England. The university's assets include an endowment valued at $29.4 billion as of October 2018, the second largest endowment of any educational institution in the world. The Yale University Library, serving all constituent schools, holds more than 15 million volumes and is the third-largest academic library in the United States.Yale College undergraduates follow a liberal arts curriculum with departmental majors and are organized into a social system of residential colleges. Almost all faculty teach undergraduate courses, more than 2,000 of which are offered annually. Students compete intercollegiately as the Yale Bulldogs in the NCAA Division I – Ivy League.
As of October 2018, 61 Nobel laureates, 5 Fields Medalists and 3 Turing award winners have been affiliated with Yale University. In addition, Yale has graduated many notable alumni, including five U.S. Presidents, 19 U.S. Supreme Court Justices, 20 living billionaires and many heads of state. Hundreds of members of Congress and many U.S. diplomats, 78 MacArthur Fellows, 247 Rhodes ...
