Vyshyvanka Day - The Day of Embroidery, is a new festivity started in 2006 in Ukraine to celebrate the ancient folk tradition of embroidery, which is used most commonly to decorate clothing and rushnyks - traditional ritual cloths used for decoration, weddings and other life events. Any textile item can be embroidered. There is a large variety of traditional embroidery ornamentation in Ukraine with regional and local differences, as well as differences over the ages in the same areas. During the communist period embroidered clothing was frowned upon and suppressed among the population, with the possibility of being arrested and sent to a gulag slave labour camp in Siberia for wearing an embroidered shirt during some of the harsher periods of the soviet dictatorship. In the post-soviet occupation period in Ukraine and eastern Europe in general, embroidered clothing has had a major revival of popularity. In Ukraine politicians and other public figures make a special point of wearing beautiful embroidered shirts and clothing in public, which resonates strongly among the people. From 2008 there has started to be a tradition in Ukraine and abroad to have vyshyvanka - embroidered shirt and clothing parades, and there are efforts to make Vyshyvanka Day, which is in May, a national holiday. This coincides with the blossoming of spring and the re-birth of nature, in the yearly cycle.
People who are traditional native faith believers hold up the vyshyvanka as a highly sacred art form and tradition. They have special forms of embroidery and art forms that they use and are reviving which reflect their ancestral traditions and have deep ancient spiritual meaning. Traditional embroidery artists prefer to use hand-embroidery and even hand-made cloth and thread for more authenticity. Руське Православне Коло - Rus Orthodox Circle
