Russia: Sculptor creates bust of Putin as Roman emperor for Victory Day
A bronze bust of Vladimir Putin, depicting the Russian president as a Roman emperor, was in its final stage of creation in St. Petersburg, Tuesday. The man behind the bust, Pavel Greshnikov, said that whilst there was already a Russian emperor in Peter the Great, he wanted to create a Roman inspired bust of Putin because Roman armour looks masculine, in my opinion. And Moscow is the Third Rome.
SOT, Pavel Greshnikov, sculptor (in Russian): Roman Emperor. Why not? I wanted to make the Russian Emperor – Peter the Great. But he already exists, so it will not be that cool. But Roman armour looks masculine, in my opinion. And Moscow is the Third Rome. It is something impressive.

Sochi Seaport. Sochi, Russia
Sochi’s sea-gate is 1.5 kilometres away from the railway station. The sea terminal, which is on the official architectural landmarks list, looks like a real palace. The former Marina, now a shopping and amusement centre, was built in the mid-20th century to the design of Karo Alabian and Leonid Karlik. With its majestic colonnade, open terraces, broad stairways and arches, and its 70-metre tower with a steeple, it is quite reminiscent of St. Petersburg’s Admiralty. The central tower is adorned with a sculptural composition: the female statues represent seasons of the year, the male statues stand for the cardinal points, and the dolphins symbolize the opulence of the Black Sea coast. Following a massive rebuilding and the addition of some new buildings on the northern pier, Sochi’s passenger port is now the largest in the Black Sea region. It remains open for supersize ships all year round. Global cruise expos and regattas take place here on a regular basis.
There are two noteworthy monuments next to the port. The one in the park across from the rotunda commemorates Peter I, the emperor who expanded Russia so that it gained access to the three seas: Baltic, Azov and Black. He did not, however, build any navy on the Black Sea, like he did on the Baltic Sea. The second monument, standing in the shade of some sycamores by the southern pier, depicts the seeing-off of the main characters of Soviet cult comedy Diamond Arm on their overseas cruise. That scene was actually filmed at the Sochi port.

VISITING THE FRIGATE Shtandart IN THE PORT OF SEVILLE
At the beginning of the 18th century Russia got one of its main spoils of the War with Sweden: access to the Baltic Sea. The city of St. Petersburg, the future capital of the empire, was founded at the mouth of the Neva River.
In 1703, at the shipyard of Olonets by order of Tsar Peter the Great, the first frigate of the Baltic fleet, the Shtandart, was launched, its first captain being Pedro I in person.
The warship received its name in honor of the imperial standard. Before 1701 it showed an eagle holding in its claws the maps of the three seas to which Russia had access (the Azov, the Black and the White). After the acquisition of the Baltic, the fourth was added.
The Great Northern War (1700-21), during which the Shtandart was built, lasted 18 years after its launch. The Shtandart took part in military actions until the year 1719 when it was decommissioned. After this, Pedro I promulgated an edict of conservation of the Firstborn of the fleet (as he called it) as a monument to the Russian naval industry.
Unfortunately, without care or attention, the Shtandart and other boats docked in the Kronwerk Canal deteriorated very quickly.
In 1727, a commission sent by Catherine I reviewed the status of the ship and decided to take it to the dry dock to be restored. But time and water had already deteriorated so much the helmet that during the attempts to raise it, the cable cut the helmet in several sections. The old Shtandart was scrapped and a new decree was promulgated by the Empress: In honor of his name given by his Majesty Peter I a new one will be built
But that order would only be executed almost 300 years later ...
Peter the Great
Peter the Great, Peter I or Pyotr Alexeyevich (Russian: Пётр Алексе́евич, Пётр I, Pyotr I, or Пётр Вели́кий, Pyotr Velikiy) (9 June [O.S. 30 May] 1672 – 8 February [O.S. 28 January] 1725) ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire from 7 May [O.S. 27 April] 1682 until his death, jointly ruling before 1696 with his half-brother. In numerous successful wars he expanded the Tsardom into a huge empire that became a major European power. He led a cultural revolution that replaced some of the traditionalist and medieval social and political system with one that was modern, scientific, Europe-oriented, and based on The Enlightenment.

Pulitzer-Winning Applebaum: 'Ukrainians reject Russian values after Putin's war'
Do a Google search of 'Ukrainian nationalism' and top results will frequently include words or phrases including 'Stepan Bandera', 'Neo-Nazi' or 'Azov Battalion'. These outcomes emerge from a much broader Russia's information campaign against Ukraine to influence people's opinions. This has lead to the real definition of 'Ukrainian Nationalism' being forgotten; a concept based on values of democracy and liberalism.
Ukraine Today correspondent sat down with Pulitzer Prize-winning author, international journalist and expert on Eastern Europe Anne Applebaum about the development of Ukrainian nationalism over the past century and how the country's EuroMaidan protests in late 2013/early 2014 led to a civil society drive.

Western Lights- Part 08 In The Paradise Of Christopher Columbus
This is a film I have stressed over for almost the entire 4 years that TruthJunkieMikael has been up and running. Western Lights, as innocent as it seems, was rocked by enormous amounts of scandal that didn't really have much to do with the floating school boys or school masters or film makers and government officials in France that made this movie such an anticipated project in the art film societies around the world. I'll be glad to discuss these issues in pm, but as for the film post itself, I have decided to only express what the movie has meant to me. With hope that it will help the film to endure and be loved the way it always should have been.
The Floating School was a project that existed for about 30 years. Allowing boys from all walks of life in France to leave the public school system and set out sometimes for a couple of years on long journeys around the world for the sake of a broader more hands on education and for the sake of introducing controversial social issues to young students without any present opposition.
In Western Lights, this particular group of 11 boys and 1 school master try and set sail in a boat of similar size as the ships used by Christopher Columbus, in an attempt to travel alone across the Atlantic to some of the first destinations that 16th century sailors discovered in the new world. Setting sail in Spain and ending the film in the Yucatán Peninsula. The film was issued in 11 Sonnets, covering the fun, loneliness, adventure and excitement, and bonding that existed in the several month long trip in these young boys lives. It's really a great film. One I have been familiar with since I was a young teen myself. I was inspired and jealous of the adventure, the very close friendships and the cultures and learning's they got to experience. So, inspired I almost ran away from home as a boy to find a ship that I could seek adventure and romance on.
It's a rather impractical notion in this day and age but I was a terribly romantic minded kid. Among lots of other things, I also wanted to run away with the circus, run away and be a pornographer/actor for Sebastian Bleisch, Roman Hysek and Pawel Rousek in early 90's Germany and Czechoslovakia, become pen pals with Sam Manzie, and runaway to Sweden to study philosophy with Ingmar Bergman. I know it sounds insane, and a laugh about it now, but I was a starkly open gay boy from a very, very young age, and in my experience LGBTP kids grow up in an entirely different realm of thought and reason then kids that are raised in much more common environments. Often, especially in the more conservative age I grew up in, we discover and embrace ideas and actions key to our way of life at a very young age, or we don't survive past those years.
The boys in Western Lights exemplified everything I wanted from my life. A special bond with each other and their school master. A desire for love and adventure. To do things that most kids would never imagine doing at any point in their lives. I'm sure a lot of you will think this is sappy, boring, sentimental crap, but this film is very special to me, and later in life when I discovered the scandals that rocked every foundation of French society and their government because of things that went on at times with the Floating Schools, I loved it even more. All my life I've always wanted to meet one of the boys that got to set sail on these adventures and tell him how much this movie meant to me as a child. An enjoyment and sentiment that I continue to feel now when I watch it. I hope you enjoy it and see the innocent and joyous abandon that I have always seen in this film and not the reputation that the French government of the time has said we should have of the film.
