Russia: Momument to Catherine the Great unveiled in Simferopol
A reconstructed monument to Empress Catherine the Great, who made Crimea part of the Russian Empire in 1783, were unveiled during an official ceremony in the Yekaterininski Garden in Simferopol, Friday, alongside two bronze statues of Prince Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin-Tavricheski and Prince Vasili Mikhailovich Dolgorukov-Krymski.
SOT, Sergei Aksenov, Prime Minister of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Russian): Crimea's reunification with Russia was peaceful and totally supported by the Crimean people who have already become Russian citizens.
SOT, Sergei Aksenov, Prime Minister of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Russian): Historic justice has been restored with Crimea's reunification with the Motherland. Today's restoration is a tribute to the Empress and marks the restoration of justice. She [Catherine the Great] is an important historical figure for Russia. Once she had already made such a decision on Crimea's reunification with the Russian state.
SOT, Sergei Aksenov, Prime Minister of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Russian): I believe there are certain parallels. In 2014, our president made such a decision. The Empress Catherine made the same decision [in 1783]. The Crimea has always been a part of Russia.
