Relatives of the seamen who died on board the ill-fated submarine, the Kursk, began to arrive in Murmansk on Friday.
Memorial ceremonies will be held on Sunday to mark the one-year anniversary of the disaster.
The victims' families were spirited away on buses to the nearby closed city of Vidyaevo, home dock for the submarine, where commemoration ceremonies will be held.
The Kursk submarine exploded during exercises on 12 August 2000, and plunged to the sea bottom.
All 118 men aboard were killed.
International rescue efforts to prepare the submarine to be lifted are underway under the Barents Sea.
The hulk will be lifted in mid-September and brought to dry dock.

Hazing Russian soldiers - Fowm Moscow to Murmansk
In Russia, the duty of service still exists and the hazing of newcomers is a national drama that claims many victims every year. In Murmansk, Jelle Brandt Corstius visits the Soldiers Mothers Committee where concerned mothers are trying to save their sons. Jelle drinks with war veterans to the fallen comrades, and speaks to a mother whose son committed suicide after cruel hazing practices during his service.
Original title: Soldiers as sacrificial offering
In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Through topics like women in Russia, new censorship, the environmental problem from Russian perspective and the ideological vacuum, a relatively unknown side of Russia is once again exposed.
Presented by: Jelle Brandt Corstius

The height of the pedestal is 7 metres (23 ft); the statue is 35.5 metres (116 ft) tall.[1] It is the second-tallest statue in Russia, after The Motherland Calls in Volgograd. The weight of the statue, which is hollow, is over 5,000 tons. STORYLINE:
The families of the 118 men killed when the Kursk Russian nuclear submarine sank a year ago have been paying tribute to them at memorial ceremonies.
In the closed naval town of Vidyayevo, where the Kursk crew was based, soldiers laid wreaths at a monument for the sailors who died at sea.
Later on Sunday, a memorial plaque bearing the names of all 118 crew members was unveiled at the pier where the Kursk had once docked.
After a minute's silence, the relatives, many dabbing their eyes with handkerchiefs, laid flowers at the edge of the dock as the sailors' names were read over a loudspeaker.
Some flung roses into the sea.
They then gathered for a service at the town's small wooden church.
The morning sun gave way to rain, and those relatives who couldn't fit inside the church huddled under umbrellas just outside the door.
Church services around the country honoured the sailors who died in the accident on August 12 last year.
Russian media said sailors from the Pacific port of Vladivostok to Sevastopol on the Black Sea observed a minute's silence for the Kursk crew.
The anniversary comes as an international operation is underway to raise the Kursk in mid-September.
Officials say salvaging the vessel could shed light on the cause of the disaster.
The government has said the explosion that sank the Kursk was caused by a practice torpedo.
But it remains unclear whether the torpedo exploded due to a fault - the theory favoured by most outside experts - or by a collision, possibly with a foreign vessel.
Russian officials have tried to turn the salvage operation into a show of openness.
During the crisis last year, the government came under strong criticism for releasing contradictory information.
Most journalists were kept away from Vidyayevo and other closed military towns, and only a state television crew was allowed to report from the site of the disaster.
The Russian Navy is keen now to embrace a spirit of openness and raising the crippled submarine is part of that new approach.
But some fear the salvage operation will reveal little, since the submarine's mangled front compartment, where the explosion occurred, is being left on the floor of the Barents Sea.
Officials say lifting the front compartment could be dangerous since it may contain unexploded torpedoes.
But they have suggested that it could be raised separately at a later date.

STORYLINE:
Grieving relatives on Thursday visited the scorched field where a Russian passenger jet crashed, and prepared to begin identifying the 170 killed in Ukraine's worst aviation accident.
Some 100 relatives travelled in a bus convoy to the crash site, where they were assisted by medical personnel and Orthodox priests.
Some carried children's toys and flowers, which they left near the wooden cross and a small stone monument.
The plane had been flying from Anapa, a holiday destination on the Russian Black Sea coast, to St. Petersburg.
The pilot of the flight sent repeated distress signals during a severe thunderstorm before the Pulkovo Airlines' Tu-154 disappeared off radar screens on Tuesday and crashed near the city of Donetsk.
Investigators into the crash focused on weather conditions, including lightning and turbulence, as the possible cause for the crash, which killed all aboard, including 45 children.
The two flight recorders, which were found on Wednesday, were dispatched to Moscow for analysis.
Russia marked Thursday as a day of mourning for the victims of the flight, with flags at the Kremlin flying at half-mast.
(Everybody) is deeply sorry, it's a horrible month, said Irina, one Moscow resident, referring to local superstition that bad things occur mostly in August in Russia.
Some Russians also attended church services for the victims.
The crash was the third in Russia or involving a Russian airline this year, raising concerns about the flight-worthiness of the civilian air fleet in the ex-Soviet Union.

SUMMARY
=======
Nicholas II or Nikolai II (Russian: Николай II Алекса́ндрович, tr. Nikolai II Aleksandrovich; 18 May [O.S. 6 May] 1868 – 17 July 1918), known as Saint Nicholas the Passion-Bearer in the Russian Orthodox Church, was the last Emperor of Russia, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his forced abdication on 2 March 1917. His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. He was given the nickname Nicholas the Bloody or Vile Nicholas by his political adversaries due to the Khodynka Tragedy, anti-Semitic pogroms, Bloody Sunday, the violent suppression of the 1905 Russian Revolution, the execution of political opponents, and his perceived responsibility for the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). Soviet historians portrayed Nicholas as a weak and incompetent leader whose decisions led to military defeats and the deaths of millions of his subjects.Russia was defeated in the 1904–1905 Russo-Japanese War which saw the annihilation of the reinforcing Russian Baltic Fleet after being sent on its round-the-world cruise at the naval Battle of Tsushima, off the coasts of Korea and Japan, the loss of Russian influence over Manchuria and Korea, and the Japanese annexation to the north of South Sakhalin Island. The Anglo-Russian Entente was designed to counter the German Empire's attempts to gain influence in the Middle East, but it also ended the Great Game of confrontation between Russia and the United Kingdom. When all Russian diplomatic efforts to prevent the First World War (1914–1918) failed, Nicholas approved the Imperial Russian Army mobilization on 30 July 1914 which gave Imperial Germany formal grounds to declare war on Russia on 1 August 1914. An estimated 3.3 million Russians were killed in the First World War. The Imperial Russian Army's severe losses, the High Command's incompetent management of the war efforts, and lack of food and supplies on the home front were all leading causes of the fall of the House of Romanov.
Following the February Revolution of 1917, Nicholas abdicated on behalf of himself and his son and heir, the Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich. He and his family were imprisoned and transferred to Tobolsk in late summer 1917. On 30 April 1918, Nicholas, Alexandra, and their daughter Maria were handed over to the local Ural Soviet council in Ekaterinburg (renamed Sverdlovsk during the Soviet era); the rest of the captives followed on 23 May. Nicholas and his family were executed by their Bolshevik guards on the night of 16/17 July 1918. The remains of the imperial family were later found, exhumed, identified and re-interred with elaborate State and Church ceremony in St. Petersburg on 17 July 1998 – 80 years later.
In 1981, Nicholas, his wife, and their children were recognized as martyrs by the Russian Orthodox Church Outsid ...

The Empress Who Ruled The World (Chinese History Documentary) | Timeline
She’s probably the most controversial woman in Chinese history – Wu Zetian, who rose from lowly concubine to become the only woman in all Chinese history to dare to take the title “Emperor”
Since her death 1,300 years ago, Wu Zetian has been remembered as a callous tyrant, who brought calamity to China. But now, extraordinary new discoveries are revealing a very different picture of her reign.
As archaeologists investigate hidden tombs, spectacular pagodas, gigantic palaces and priceless treasures from her time, they are uncovering a very different story of China’s female Emperor, her skills and her empire. Wu Zetian’s China was a military, economic and cultural superpower, whose influence stretched from the edge of the Mediterranean to Japan and India. Recent discoveries reveal the wealth and stability of her reign, and point to her skills as a politician and a leader. But they also provide tantalising new evidence of the cruelty and violence at the heart of her regime.
With hands-on investigations and access to the treasures of Wu Zetian’s time, this film tries to give a definitive answer to the question: was Emperor Wu an evil tyrant or one of the most successful rulers in all Chinese history?

Why Russia under Putin gets more nationalistic | VPRO Documentary
Why does Russia under Putin get more nationalistic? Why is nationalism in Russia a big topic? And what is modern Russia under Putin pursuing for a strategy? Dutch journalist and Russia expert try to find out who is pushing the forces behind Putin's desire for expansion and why people in Russia are again embracing nationalism.
In this eight-part travel series, the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Since Crimea is seized by Russia something has changed. The kindness and spontaneity are gone and the old mistrust of the West has come up again. Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius meet people on the street, in a shop where Putin T-shirts are sold, visits Siberian separatists, and meets Putin's philosopher and advisor Aleksandr Dugin, who rewrote the idea of Eurasia.
For the first time since World War II, a European country invaded another. The Crimea was again part of Russia, as it should be. And for the first time since the fall of the Berlin Wall, they could be proud of something. A patriot law passed by the Duma is intended to make the Russians even more patriotic. The law comes into effect in schools, in the media and also in singing choirs. A conservative, traditional life is promoted. Brandt visits a military choir that performs patriotic songs and speaks to people who feel strengthened thanks to Putin.

Vremya 14 Dec 1988 Spitak Disaster / Программа Время 14 декабря 1988 Спитак Землетрясение ENG SUB
This is the extensive news coverage of 1988 Spitak earthquake disaster on the Soviet evening news program Vremya. The earthquake has devastated northern Armenia, killed 25.000, left more than twice that injured and half a million homeless.
The news program includes disaster zone footage, interviews, hospital visits, disaster relief efforts. I have translated this video and added English subtitles to make it accessible to the non-Russian speaking Armenian diaspora.
Interviews include the legendary surgeon Dr. Mikaelyan and Professor Bagrat Garibjanyan.
