Norway: Monument to Yuri Gagarin unveiled in Bergen
Chairwoman of the regional coordination council of Russian compatriots in northern Europe, Tatiana Dahle, explained on Thursday why the university of Bergen is now hosting a memorial for the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, after the bust was unveiled on Wednesday.
SOT, Tatiana Dahle, chair of the Regional Council of Russian compatriots in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea (Russian): After his famous flight to space. Gagarin visited many countries including Norway for eight days. During his eventful time in Norway he visited three cities including Bergen, Oslo and Trondheim. He was invited to Bergen by the head of the Institute of Geophysics, the first woman who headed this respectable institution, they (Norwegians) are very proud about it. He visited the university in 1964. The Norwegians remember Gagarin. To be honest, they know about this name and remember it well, but not more than that. They liked the idea of honouring the first space flight too and therefore the memorial was accepted as a present.
SOT, Tatiana Dahle, chair of the Regional Council of Russian compatriots in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea (Russian): There were no political insinuations. To the contrary, they elevated this question above what is happening right now (political situation) and showed that culture and science is not affected by politics.

SOT Sergei Ryazansky, Flight Engineer for ISS Expedition 38 (in Russian), As far as reactions are concerned, we are seeing a greater interest and willingness to understand Russia's attitude -- and our own attitude, too, because we advocate Russia's stance as best we can, trying to explain the historical background and help them understand why there are differences and why the West has trouble understanding the situation. Indeed, Russia's position is not always conveyed comprehensibly to the American audience -- we watch both Russian and American news at the International Space Station, so we have a chance to compare ways in which information is presented. But in fact, that did not affect our daily operations, and I hope it never will.

Russian cosmonaut Sergei Ryazansky spoke about Russo-US cooperation in outer space on Thursday, underlining his hope that conflicts on earth will never affect cooperation in space exploration. Speaking at the Gagrin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Star City, he argued that Russia's position is often misrepresented in Western media, adding that Russian and American staff try to engage with both perspectives while onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Sergey Ryazansky was joined by fellow Russian Oleg Kotov and American Michael Hopkins in commemorating legendary cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin earlier on Thursday. All three are members of the ISS 38 Expedition crew, while Kotov and Ryazanski carried the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics torch into outer space for the first time in history on November 9, 2013.
