Monument to the Discoveries Tour | Lisbon Portugal
Travel Lisbon, Portugal - Tour of Monument to the Discoveries in Lisbon
Take a tour of Monument to the Discoveries in Lisbon, Portugal -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.
Where can you find all of Portugal's greatest explorers in one place?
On the bank of the Tagus, at the Monument to the Discoveries.
The striking, monolithic statue rises 50 meters in the shape of an early explorer's ship.
Climbing upwards towards knowledge are dozens of explorers bearing emblems of discovery.
At their head is Henry the Navigator holding a small caravel in his hands.
The Monument of Discoveries serves as a stirring symbol of humanity's progress through the years.
Lisbon Belem Tower and Monument to the Discoveries
Along the Lisbon waterfront are the two most famous monuments in Belem which stand as symbols of Portugal’s 16th century naval voyages: The Tower of Belem and the Monument to the Discoveries.
To understand the history of Portugal, we need to consider their spectacular maritime discoveries 500 years ago. Vasco da Gama was the first to sail around Africa and discover the ocean route to Asia, opening up a vast trade network that made Portugal rich. Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500, which Portugal claimed as their largest colony, and Portuguese navigators were the first to sail to China, in 1542. After the initial Portuguese discoveries other European countries joined in the hunt for colonies and the world would never be the same again. This was the beginning of the modern world and the start of global trade and communications.
The Tower of Belem, built between 1515 and 1520, is a fortress that guards the harbor and celebrates the discoveries in grand style, with its elaborate Manueline carved decorations similar to those at Jeronimos. It was built as a fortress to protect the entrance of Lisbon’s harbor and had originally been in the river as an island surrounded by water, but over time the river got narrower so the fortress is now on the shore. Another fortress used to be on the opposite side of the river to catch the enemy in a cross-fire. You can climb to upper levels for a panoramic view.

10 Top Tourist Attractions in Lisbon - Travel Video
The capital of sunny Portugal, Lisbon is situated at the point where the Tagus River estuary meets the Atlantic Ocean. As a travel destination, the riverfront city is as rich and varied as the country’s long history. From the ruins of a Moorish castle perched atop one of the city’s seven hills to a sidewalk café snuggled against an ancient Visigoth wall, remnants of Lisbon’s colorful past are everywhere. While Western Europe’s oldest city has taken steps to overhaul its transportation system, modernize its downtown area and revamp its waterfront, it’s the charm of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods that most attract visitors.
LISBON: Monument of Discoveries - viewpoint in Belém (Portugal)
Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a monument that celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or Age of Exploration) during the 15th and 16th centuries. It is located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and Orient.
The monument was conceived in 1939 as a temporary beacon during the Portuguese World Fair, opening in June 1940. Yet, by June 1943, the original structure was demolished after the exposition.
Between November 1958 and January 1960, a new monument was constructed in cement and rose-tinted stone, and the statues sculpted from limestone excavated from the region of Sintra. The new project was enlarged from the original 1940 model.
The South African government was responsible for gifting the construction of the square in front of the monument: a 50-metre-diameter (160 ft) Rosa-dos-Ventos (compass rose).
The top of the monument (reached via an elevator or stairs) offers views of the Tagus river, the Belém neighbourhood and its many attractions. The height of the monument is 52 m (171 ft).
The monument is located on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary, in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém, Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal).

Lisbon Full City Guide - Travel in Portugal - Travel & Discover
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal.

Belém:
The Belém Tower, one of the most famous and visited landmarks in Lisbon and throughout Portugal.
Belém is famous as the place from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery. In particular, it is the place from which Vasco da Gama departed for India in 1497 and Pedro Álvares Cabral departed for Brazil in 1499. It is also a former royal residence and features the 17th – 18th-century Belém Palace, a former royal residence now occupied by the President of Portugal, and the Ajuda Palace, begun in 1802 but never completed.
Perhaps Belém's most famous feature is its tower, Torre de Belém, whose image is much used by Lisbon's tourist board. The tower was built as a fortified lighthouse late in the reign of Dom Manuel l (1515–1520) to guard the entrance to the port. It stood on a little island in right side of the Tagus, surrounded by water. Belém's other major historical building is the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), which the Torre de Belém was built partly to defend. Belém's most notable modern feature is the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) built for the Portuguese World Fair in 1940. Padrão dos Descobrimentos lit. Monument of the Discoveries) is a monument on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary, in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém, Lisbon. Located along the river where ships departed to explore and trade with India and the Orient, the monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery (or Age of Exploration) during the 15th and 16th centuries.
In the heart of Belém is the Praça do Império: gardens centred upon a large fountain, laid out during World War II. To the west of the gardens lies the Centro Cultural de Belém. Belém is one of the most visited Lisbon districts. Here is located the Estádio do Restelo, house of Belenenses.

PORTUGAL: Statue Christ the King - viewpoint Almada /Lisbon
The Sanctuary of Christ the King (Portuguese: Santuário de Cristo Rei) is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon situated in the city of Almada, Portugal.
It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument.
The project was inaugurated on 17 May 1959, while Portugal was ruled by António de Oliveira Salazar who gave his final permission for the project. The giant statue in cement was erected to express gratitude that the Portuguese were spared the horrors and destruction of World War II.
In 1941 the land which was used to construct the monument was acquired. The construction project began in 1949 and took ten years to complete. But it was only in 1952 that the first construction started.
The first inauguration of the complex officially was on 17 May 1959. On the 25th anniversary of the Shrine in 1984, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. A new plan was approved to recondition the grounds of the Shrine and also to build a Sanctuary, which included a rectory, a chapel, administration and meeting halls and exhibition galleries.
In order to support pilgrimage to the site, in June 2004 new spaces in the Sanctuary building were inaugurated, including a dining room for 150 people and two segregated dormitories. This was followed on 17 May 2005, with the inauguration of a 150-person dining area and 80-person meeting hall, in addition to two segregated dormitories, dining room and kitchen.
Improvements to the monument and sanctuary of Christ the King began in 2006. By 17 May of that year, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. In the following year (17 May 2007), the Pope John XXIII hall was opened, containing eight oil paintings.
________________________
The monument was erected on an isolated clifftop 133 m above the sea, overlooking the Tagus River left bank.
It is the highest point in Almada, on a plateau dominated by the 25 de Abril Bridge, and close to the Estação Elevatória e Reservatório do Pragal.
It is accessible from Lisbon by car (over the 25 de Abril Bridge east of the crossing), by train through station in Pragal and by ferry over the Tagus, through the port of Cacilhas in Almada.
The monument consists of a trapezoidal pedestal of 82 metres (269 ft) height, formed by four arches and a flat platform, supporting the 28 metres (92 ft) image of Christ.
Its base was designed by architect António Lino in the form of a gate, while the statue of Christ the King was designed by sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa.
The four arches of the pedestal are oriented in the directions of the compass rose. The figure of Christ, comparable to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, forms a cross, with its arms extended out facing the city of Lisbon, as if to embrace the city. Due to issues of security and safety, the monument was sufficiently distanced from the cliffs on which it predominates.
At the base of the statue is the observation deck, at 82 metres (269 ft), which enables panoramic views of the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge.
Under the statue, occupying a fifth of the pedestal's height, is the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace (Nossa Senhora da Paz) with an entrance from the northern facade. This space is distinctly different with its masonry stone, the northern facade surmounted by cross and the other facades containing narrow doors.
Inside two of the pillars is an elevator system with access to the terrace; the statue is 79.30 metres high, and overlooks the Tagus (192 metres above the river).
To the south of the monument is the Sanctuary building, comprising a rectangular body of three wings, with facades covered with masonry brick.
