Monumental Cemetery - Milan, Italy
My video takes you on a stroll through the elegant Cimitero Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery), noted for its abundance of artistic tombs and monuments. It's one of the two largest cemeteries in Milan, the other, Cimitero Maggiore. Designed by the architect Carlo Maciachini (1818-1899), the cemetery was planned to consolidate a number of small cemeteries.
We start at the main entrance, through the large Famedio, a massive hall of a neo-medieval style building made of marble and stone that contains the tombs of some of the city's and the country's most honored citizens, including that of novelist Alessandro Manzoni.
Officially opened in 1866, it has since been filled with a wide range of contemporary and classical Italian sculptures as well as Greek temples, elaborate obelisks, and other original works such as a scaled-down version of the Trajan's Column. More info about travel to Milan: While there are many evocative cemeteries in Europe, this one, with its emotional portrayals of the departed and their heavenly escorts in the melodramatic art styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is in a class by itself. Join me The Cemetery Detective as I explore and research the cemeteries of Italy. In this episode I research Cemeterio Monumentale in Milan, Italy.
The purpose of my trip to Italy is to gain a better understanding of the customs and practices of Italian Cemeteries. I am fascinated with the enormous monuments, crypts, and sarcophagi I am experiencing.
I visited Italy for the first time in 2007. Mostly staying in Rome, I was awestruck with the cemeteries I found there. Venturing much further afield for this research trip, I am visiting extravagant marble cemeteries with sculptures by world famous sculptors to mountain top cemeteries with simple wooden crosses.
I have been a hiker most of my life but the mountain trails I am traversing to find these cemeteries are some of the toughest trails (hilly) trails I've ever climbed.

Thank you for sharing my interest in cemeteries.

The Civico Mausoleo Palanti designed by the architect Mario Palanti is a tomb built for meritorious Milanesi, or citizens of Milan. The memorial of about 800 Milanese killed in Nazi concentration camps is located in the center and is the work of the group BBPR, formed by leading exponents of Italian rationalist architecture that included Gianluigi Banfi.
The cemetery has a special section for those who do not belong to the Catholic religion and a Jewish section. Near the entrance there is a permanent exhibition of prints, photographs, and maps outlining the cemetery's historical development. It includes two battery-operated electric hearses built in the 1920s.

GENOA, EXPLORING the spectacular monuments of MONUMENTAL CEMETERY (STAGLIENO), ITALY ⚱️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno which is an extensive cemetery located on a hillside in the district of Staglieno of Genoa, Italy, famous for its monumental sculpture. Covering an area of more than a square kilometre, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe.
It is a stunning cemetery famous for its extraordinarily delicate & lifelike mourning sculptures
Designed by the famous Genovese architect Carlo Barabino in a Neo-Classical style, the Staglieno Cemetery (Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno) opened in 1851. A compromise between the formality of the traditional orderly camposanto layout and the newly fashionable wilderness style of boschetto irregulare, seen in Père Lachaise in Paris, the grounds included cloisters, garden paths, and a reproduction of the famous Pantheon in Rome. The new cemetery quickly became the fashionable death option, and increasingly was a showcase for world-class sculpture.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Tour of the Monumentale Cemetery | Italia Slow Tour
The Monumentale Cemetery is probably Milan's most important location. Above the central entrance we see the statue of Gloria, that welcomes the illustrious names of our country's past. The Cemetery itself, it is virtually an open-air park museum: the tombs and the burial chapels are constructed in different styles and built in different ways, that could tell the history of the city of Milan!

The song ...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Lyrics ..
