Diocaesarea Olba (UZUNCABURC - MERSIN - TURKEY)
Uzuncaburç (Diocaesarea-Olba), 32 km (20 miles) north of Silifke (A County of Mersin) near Turkey's Mediterranean coast, is the ancient city of Diocaesarea-Olba , famous for its great Temple of Zeus Olbius.
At Uzuncaburç (oo-ZOON-jah-boorch) the most impressive ruins are those of the Temple of Zeus Olbius, the nearby Temple of Tyche, and the monumental city gate. There are also ruins of a nymphaeum (fountain), and a theater.
Of course there is the eponymous tall Hellenistic tower, a stolid squarish one over 22 meters (72 feet) high, built for observation and defense. You'll see it as you enter the village. You can enter it by a door on the south side, but there's little to see inside, and you cannot ascend.
The settlment started during the Hellenisttic period and continued through the Roman period.
This area şs calculated to be older than 2300 years.
- Get to know an ancient Roman monumental fountain The Nymphaeum of Q. Mutius in Segni, Italy.
- Get to know an ancient Roman monumental fountain and enjoy guided tours linked to other remarkable itineraries in a medieval town south Rome. The Nymphaeum of Q. Mutius in Segni, Italy. Territory to be explored.
The nymphaeum is located within an area of ca. 3,800 square meters. The entire surrounding area has been fitted to be an open space dedicated to educational activities and served by a small visitor center to enjoy guided tours linked to other remarkable itineraries to Segni town, the Porta Saracena, the Temple complex of Juno Moneta and the monumental polygonal walls.
Since its discovery and first publication in 1995, the Nymphaeum of Q. Mutius has been recognized as one of the most important testimonies of late Hellenistic Roman architecture. The monumental fountain, dated to the late second - early first century BC, is nearly perfectly preserved: it consists of a small room, open towards the valley, with a series of niches upon the side walls. A large pool occupies the internal space.
The importance of the monument, dated to between the late second and the early first century BC, is due to the presence in the very center of a perfectly preserved mosaic inscription that bears the signature of the architect responsible for the project: Quintus Mutius.
Nymphaeum - //mKnoise
NYMPHAEUM (Gr. νύμφαιον, νυμφαῖον), in Greek and Roman antiquities, a monument consecrated to the nymphs (q.v.), especially those of springs. These monuments were originally natural grottoes, which tradition assigned as habitations to the local nymphs. They were sometimes so arranged as to furnish a supply of water. Subsequently, artificial took the place of natural grottoes. The nymphaea of the Roman period were borrowed from the constructions of the Hellenistic east. The majority of them were rotundas, and were adorned with statues and paintings. They served the threefold purpose of sanctuaries, reservoirs and assembly-rooms. A special feature was their use for the celebration of marriages. Such nymphaea existed at Corinth, Antioch and Constantinople; the remains of some twenty have been found at Rome and of many in Africa. The so-called exedra of Herodes Atticus (which answers in all respects to a nymphaeum in the Roman style), the nymphaeum in the palace of Domitian and those in the villa of Hadrian at Tibur (five in number) may be specially mentioned. The term nymphaeum was also applied to the fountains of water in the atrium of the Christian basilica, which according to Eusebius (x. 4) were symbols of purification.

Bet She'an Israel - Visiting One of the Oldest Cities in the World is Awesome Even if in Ruins
Beit Shean park seems a bit overwhelming at first glance and in the summer it can be very hot as the city lies in the low-lying valley like a frying pan.
The first site along the route is the huge theatre, built around 200 CE. Although the middle tier has been robbed, and the upper tier has blown off altogether, the preservation is impressive. There used to be seats for 7000 spectators. A stairway on the east side gave access to the theatre for VIPs, and besides that there are 8 other entrances for the common folk. The theatre stayed in use until the Byzantine era. At the foot of the VIP stairs are a Roman temple and a fountain house.
At the back of the theatre, across the street, lie the remains of the biggest Byzantine bath in Israel. They show that exercise madness is from all times: there was a huge colonnaded gym which looked like a temple with swimming pools and heated halls to extract sweat from the body on three sides. The northern rooms were unheated and used for socialising. A monumental entrance leads out to the street.
At the northeast corner of the bathhouse there used to be a small Roman tfor musical perfo. However a later Byzantine building is partly built on top of it, and thereby destroyed it. The Byzantine construction is built in a semicircle consisting of an open market with separate rooms (for shops probably), each of which contains a mosaic. One of the rooms holds a marvellous mosaic of Tyche, the Roman goddess of good fortune. Her crown is a walled city (Scythopolis) and in her hand she holds the horn of plenty, full to the brim with riches. In some of the other rooms archaeologists were busy working during our visit. They are not digging for deeper layers, but restoring the mosaics in its original appearance. In the future there should more to see here.
Outside we step onto the main street of the city. It is paved with basalt slabs, in the middle, flagstones cover a drain. On both sides of the street are sidewalks. Along the western side of the street were shops. Leading to the Tel, the street winded along the whole Tel (this cannot be seen today).
At the Tel, stairs led up to the temple of Zeus, which stood at the summit. The remains at the corner of the street are of the temple of Dionysos, the city's patron god. It had four columns of 10 meter high which supported a triangular stone. Inside steps lead up to the temple itself which rests on a podium.
Next to the temple of Dionysos was a nymphaeum, a decorative fountain. The structure is made from basalt lined with limestone.
Next to it along the street leading eastward is a large public building which was used in Roman times as a sort of roofed forum to do the business of the city. In Byzantine times it was renovated and used as a large market or in the Greek word 'agora'. On the sides were covered shops. On one side lies a beautiful mosaic of a lion

Roma, Ninfeo, noto come Tempio di Minerva Medica (manortiz)
This temple took the name from the statue of Minerva with the snake, symbol of medicine, which was found here; but originally it was probably a construction remained from the Horti Liciniani, dating from the 4th century. The diameter of this decagon edifice is 25m, and its semi-spherical ceiling dropped down in 1828. There is a large brick building in Via Giolitti in the Esquilino quarter next to the Roma-Pantano urban railroad line, consisting of a hall covered with a dome having a plan of twelve sides (dodecagon). Each side, except for the entrance one, presents a semicircular niche.
There are ten large windows in the walls of the hall. This was one of the most admirable classic structures, as for the sense of space, as for the sense of movement of the architecture. Nevertheless, there was no any zone around it, created to give respect to this rare example of classic epoch.
The building can be dated back to the fourth century A.D. and is identified as a nymphaeum (monumental fountain) that was part of the complex of the Horti Liciniani, a large villa that was named after Emperor Licinius Gallienus (260-268 A.D.). Several statues were found in the area during excavations performed in the nineteenth century, including one of the goddess Minerva that gave the name to the building.
