Saavira Kambada Temple (Kannada: ಸಾವಿರ ಕಂಬದ ಬಸದಿ Sāvira Kambada Basadi) or Tribhuvana Tilaka Cūḍāmaṇi (Sanskrit: त्रिभुवन तिलक चूडामणि), is a basadi (ಬಸದಿ) or Jain temple noted for its 1000 pillars in Moodabidri, Karnataka, India. The temple is also known as Chandranatha Temple since it honors the tirthankara Chandraprabha, whose eight-foot idol is worshipped in the shrine.
The town of Moodabidri is noted for its eighteen Jain temples but Saavira Kambada Temple is considered the finest among them.
History
The Basadi was built by the local chieftain, Devaraya Wodeyar in 1430 with additions made in 1962. The shrine has a 60 feet tall monolith manasthambha (erected by Karkala Bhairava Queen Nagala Devi). Saavira Kambada Basadi
Saavira Kambada Basadi, a Jain temple in Karnataka, is well known across the world not only because it was built in 1430, but because of the remarkable pillars that are an integral part of the temple. The temples is also known as the Tribhuvana Tilaka Chudamani Basadi or the crest jewel of the three worlds.
The local Chieftain Devaraya Wodeyar initiated the construction of the temple in 1430, but the temple as it stands today includes additions made in 1962. The temple was constructed over a painstaking period of 31 years. An equivalent amount of 9 crores was spent in the construction of the fascinating temple. The construction of the temple took place in phases. The first phase saw the construction of the sanctum sanctorum with the nine foot idol of Chandranath. The idol is the reason the temple is also known as the Chandranath Basadi.
The second phase oversaw the construction of the magnificent prayer hall with its innumerable pillars. The last phase of construction was the erection of the manasthamba, commissioned by Queen Nagala Devi. The 60 foot monolith is in many ways the center piece in a temple that is awe-inspiring around every turn.
Although the temple complex feature three separate stories, devotees are only allowed on the upper floors once in a year. Despite being one of the oldest and biggest Jain temples in Asia, the upper floors are in many ways a well-kept secret.
Stone chandeliers that seemingly defy gravity and other such architectural marvels form a part of the landscape of the temple and never fail to boggle the modern man’s mind.
The sacred and ancient Jain literature was moved to Moodabidri from Shravanbelagola when the Mughals assaulted in an attempt to rule over all of the subcontinent. These texts were rediscovered and preserved in the 1800s.
The texts referred to as the Moodabidri texts are actually Prakrit texts that were copied in the ancient old Kannada script on to palm leaves using only pinpricks. Believed to have been scribed around the year 1060 the palm leaves are one of the last few vestiges of the era that dates back to Arihant.
Moodbidri is affectionately known as the Jain Kashi in India.

This was our first unplanned trip which turned out to be an amazing decision.
Day 1:
Left for Ujire early morning. Reached the Stream of Joy homestay in the afternoon. It is a lovely place with the stream right opposite to the rooms. You can spend a few hours in the beautiful stream and also use the bamboo raft :)
We visited the Dharmasthala temple and the Shree Rama Kshethra in the evening.
Day 2:
The Sowthadka Shree Mahaganapathi Temple is quite unique as the Ganapathi idol is out in the open field without a ‘Garbha gudi’ and temple structure.
On the way to Moodabidri, we visited the Hosanadu Kodyadka temple of Goddess Annapoorneshwari. It's a very peaceful and serene place.
We stayed at Hotel Pancharathna International (Moodabidri).
Day 3:
We visited the Saavira Kambada Basadi (1000 pillar temple) in Moodabidari. The architecture and the pillars are fascinating, with each pillar having unique intricate carvings.
On the way back to Bangalore, we also visited the Kukke Subramanya Temple.

Jain basadi is known also as Derasar. This Basadi is located in Karkala, Udupi district of Karnataka. it is one of the ancient Jain pilgrimage center in Udupi. The Basadi (temple) has four sets of statues of Tirthankara Aranath, Mallinath and Munisuvratnath facing in all four directions. It carved out of black stones and built ontop of a small hill. The Jain rulers who ruled Karkala at that period gave due importance to construction of basadis , which have stood the test of time. Karkala tourism has not been advertised much but has many interesting location nearby such as the Gommatta Betta, Anekere, and many more jain basadis in and around the area. The basadi has few interesting carvings on its pillars , some optical illusion carvings of a bull and elephant carved with two different body and head overlapping the other carving.
Karkala is 60 kilometers from Mangalore and 7 hours drive from Bangalore. For travel enthusiast Karkala tourism and karnataka tourism holds many places to be explored.Places near Karkala ,such as Moodabidri , Malpe beach , udupi offer tourists various choices for visit from beaches, temples, jain mandirs.

Moodbidri, is a small town located at a distance of 35 km north-east of Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada district. Moodbidri is known as the 'Jain Kashi' of South India and it is an ancient center of Jain learning.
Moodbidri houses 18 Jain temples (basadis). The oldest of them is the 15th century Chandranatha Basadi, which is also known as the 1000 (Thousand) Pillars temple or 'Savira Kambada basadi'.
This is a large granite temple built in 1430 A.D. The main entrance of the thousand pillar temple, which faces the east, opens onto a wonderful 15 meter tall monolithic pillar called Mahastamba in front of the doorway.
The 2.5 meter tall bronze idol of Lord Chandranatha Swami in the sanctum hall is considered to be very sacred. The pillars of this basadi are decorated with carvings typical of Vijayanagara style.
The temple boasts of a valuable collection of jewel-encrusted metallic images of Jain tirthankaras, and superb monolithic columns in the Jain tradition, each with a different carving.
The Jain Mutt near the main temple entrance has a library protecting some beautiful 12th and 13th century palm leaf manuscripts.

The Kadalakere Nisargadhama of Moodabidri, Karnataka's latest tourist hot spot Located in the Dakshina Kannada district, on Karnataka’s west coast, Moodabidri is famous for a variety of reasons. It is called Jain Kashi for its already famous Jain Basadis and is a renowned education centre with several engineering medical and general colleges dotting its undulating landscape. It attracts pilgrims from all over the world and is fast becoming a prominent tourist destination with the support and initiatives of the state government and its officials.
One example of their initiative to improve the attractiveness of the town is the beautiful Kadalakere nisargadhama.
Kadalakere nisargadhama is about two kms away from Moodabidri town. It is a place full of greenery located at Marpady village in Ontikatte.
Of the total 58 acres of land, 30 acres has been utilized to build a lake. 10 acres have been reserved for Kambala. 20 acres have been reserved for the fire service department. 50 cents of land is reserved for the construction of Rotary Park and the remaining 50 cents has been reserved for Home guards.
Kadalakere nisargadhama has been developed with the guidance of the DC, MLAs, MLCs and officers of several departments and the Kadalakere Nisargadhama Society.
*Island and bird Sanctuary in the lake:*
The lake has been constructed during the year 2012-13 at the cost of one crore has a manmade island spread over 1.70 acres, in its midst. A beautiful bird sanctuary has been established nearby and one can see different species of birds migrating to this area. Many species of trees have been nurtured here to provide food and a nesting place for these birds. The lake has also helped in water conservation.
Guests have been provided with comfortable seating facility to enjoy the beauty of nature. A boating facility, on the lines of the one at Pilikula Nisargadhama at Mangalore, has been introduced recently. Visitors can enjoy the waters of the lake on a motor boat or pedal boats.
Officials are planning to plant bamboo and other rare trees in this area. The monsoon doubles the beauty of the lake and nature lovers can be seen reveling in its beauty during the monsoon, fondly calling it Mungaru Kere or Monsoon Lake.
There is seen the Koti-Chennaya Jodukare Kambala being organized here for the last 11 years. This rural sport in this beautiful locale has made this place famous, attracting numerous people to witness the action.
However, despite these numerous attractions, it remains a weekend picnic spot rather than a regular destination on Karnataka's tourist map. Even pilgrims who visit Hosanadu Kodadka Annapoorneshwari temple which is 3km away from the Jain Basadi and Kadalakere are not aware of these tourist places, but this is beginning to change.
“We are planning many projects in this area to make it a model tourist spot and attract more and more tourists”, said by member of Municipal corporation and director of Kadalakere Nisargadhama Society.
*Cultural Centre to disseminate the region's history and culture:*
History, tradition and culture are easily forgotten in the warmth of modernism and this must not be allowed to happen to the rich heritage of Moodabidri. A museum or a memorial needs to be built to disseminate the history, tradition and culture of Moodabidri as the region is already popular as cultural centre because of the Kambala.
There is a proposal to start a Rathnakaravarni centre which is appreciable. If the cultural centre is built then there is no doubt the Kadalakere nisargadhama will become a special attraction as entertainment can then easily follow knowledge of the area. There is also a need to develop Konaje kallu, which will aid tourism in Moodabidri.
Access is an important facet of tourism and as the asphalted roads are concretized gradually, and the facilities and amenities expanded, tourism is bound to grow.
