Sara Lake Manitoba
Sara Lake is a shallow lake in Duck Mountain-Manitoba. Sara creek runs into Mallard Lake. Both lakes have abundant waterfowl. I often see Swan's and Pelicans there.
Ni-kis-ki-sin with Stanley Patchinose of Moose Lake
Stanley Patchinose of Moose Lake. Mosakahiken,
I was born here in 1919, I've been living here since then growing up. I started working as I got older. I did stuff inside my house, then started trapping in my younger days. We used to move to a trap line. We would trap Rats, Otters, Beavers, and anything we could trap. We used to kill a lot because trapping was rich back then. It was a lot of work.
Starting early in the morning, before even the sun came up, we would already be walking looking around for animals to trap. We would walk and work right from before the sun came up right up till the sun was gone. We would work right up until we couldn’t see anything in the dark. This was the only way we would eat and feed our children. Each day we would do this and if we got lazy or if we stopped for a bit then we would go hungry.
Once we ran out of food then we would have to hunt and trap or we wouldn’t eat. There was no welfare back then and when I got back from trapping or hunting there would be no hot meal waiting for me at home because I had to bring it first.
It was hard, back in those days. Now today people live rich because they get welfare and stuff is given to them.
We used to live over there for the winter because that’s where the fishing was good. All kinds of fish good to eat and plus the ladies would make grease from the fish guts to cook things in different ways.
In the wintertime when we lived there, we would put on our snowshoes and go look for that moose. But once we found the mooses footprints. We would go look for it and usually, we would find it resting and having a bite to eat, and that’s when we would shoot it and kill it. We would walk for miles.
Today these people have it so easy when they hunt for moose, they just jump in a vehicle and go out and wait for moose. They think they’re hunting, that’s not how hunting was done back then we would have to walk for miles and miles.
And fishing too, I would go set nets to find fish and would have to make a hole in the ice and do it real neat so the net won’t get caught in the ice. I was alone, I never had a helper. I was very careful not to break my nets. They had to be set in a certain way too so I can put my net back into the water. I had to put my fish in that thing so they won’t freeze because it is cold out. I used to do all this by myself and nowadays they have fishermen helpers. Long ago there were no helpers because we all had to feed our own families, we didn’t have Skidoos or vehicles.
Sometimes I would take dogs if I was going far. I made a box for the dogs to pull the box where it would have fish in them. We would take them to this one little house there used to be someone there to make sure the fish wouldn’t freeze. We did everything ourselves. Plus we didn’t have any money to pay any helpers anyway. Then Freshwater came along and started buying fish but it didn’t pay much. I used 10 nets but still not much. Only 3 cents for one species and a jackfish 5 cents. I like that I told a little bit too of how hard it used to be a long time ago.

Great Canadian Parks #26- Ivvavik National Park, Yukon
Located on the Northern tip of the Yukon, bordered by Alaska and the Beaufort Sea, Ivvavik means a place for giving birth in recognition of the park's role as the calving ground for the Porcupine Caribou. The landscape is characterized by treeless arctic tundra, and the low, rounded British Mountains. 100 people visit this austere wilderness park every year, most to raft the wild Firth River
